The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal acquisition of properties by former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, while in office.

The EFCC on Tuesday presented a copy of Obasanjos file to the chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, (CACOL), Mr. Debo Adeniran and other activists.

The activists had been invited to the EFCC office in Lagos to provide the Commission with additional information after the group had submitted a petition against the former president last week.

CALCOL said in its petition that there are many reasons why Obasanjo must be probed by the EFCC.

Among the reasons cited are the setting up of Bells University of Technology, Ota, with the sum of N40 billion; the launch of his private library during which N6.5 billion was donated by Nigerian businessmen and top government functionaries while Obasanjo was still in power; the acquisition of 200 million units of shares at TransCorp and the Obasanjo Farm in Ota, worth billions of naira.

On receiving the petition, EFCCs Head of General Investigation, Mr. Usman Sarda, promised to investigate the former president who is no longer covered by immunity.

Sarda told newsmen in his office that nobody was above the law and called on any Nigerian who had a case of corruption against the former president to write a petition to EFCC.

Mr. Adeniran and other members of CACOL were invited on Tuesday by an EFCC official who identified herself as Franca. They were ushered into EG4, the office where Obasanjos file was presented to them.

CACOL members who were present include Comrade A. Declan, the acting General Secretary; Mr. Leke Adebanjo Media Officer and Mr. Kola Odepeju, Director of Finance. EFCC neither denied nor confirmed the story.

If found culpable, the former president, who came from prison to become president, is likely to return to prison and forfeit all the alleged illegally acquired properties.
