Which Is The Best Approach?

How best can you approach your boss for a raise in your salary? Can someone give me tips?

I have this friend that has worked for 6 months and needs increment in her salary but doesn't know how to go about it whether to name the amount or allow the boss to choose. Which is the best approach?

If your friend has proved herself worthy, i mean if the last six months is justified, she should mention the amount she wants and her baggaining power should be high.

I think ur friend work should earn her the raise and not the number of months she has worked.
Meanwhile, if her work rate and output is high, she should be confident enough to let her boss know that
she needs a raise and state what is obtainable in the market on similar positions.

Ask for a raise only when indispensable otherwise you will be asking for a sack

you might want to write an application for salary increase.

I did that before for a former job, actually took a risk. I wrote my application for salary increase and mailed it to my boss. He mails be back asking me why i wrote the letter blah blah blah, and I mail back that "i really believe that i deserve an increase, besides ive saved the company from a lot of losses blah blah blah, and besides, im getting better offers from other companies even tho i never applied".

So he mails back and said, if im getting better offers, what am i waiting for?, so i mail him back again, with my email title as "intent to quit, " and one of the reasons in the mail was the fact that i asked for a raise, for which he was not disposed to approve, and that I loved my job and the company(which made me to apply for a raise in the first place, rather than accept other offers), and that since he wasnt disposed to give me a raise, im left with no choice to accept a pending offer, from a competitor in the same line of business,

The truth was i had no offer on hand, but i just wanted to live on the edge for a while(sometimes, your heart just hardens like a stone). Two days later, the accountant mailed me back with new details about the increase. yahoooooooooooooooo! got a raise.

twas a risk, it worked for me, tmight not for u!!!

kimba thatz a good one but one cannot always be lucky

A Raise is something you never get unless you ask for it! or rarely command it.
The coy is there to make money you are there to collect money.(conflict in intrest rit?)
it does not usual get to choosing between sack - raise -resign.
If your friend is worth it the Coy would afford it or a new Coy would.
so what am i saying you need to prepare to back
why ? you deserve it and what are your factsas well as indirectly the effect of you not getting a raise.

Assuming is not a big company but your working for someone that is
a one -man business and the boss tells you when you were beenn empolyed that your pay will be increased and you are given accomodation and some tips always
do still have to name the pay or allow the boss to do that

Was the amount mention intially or and idea given?
Its harder to deal with a one -biz thingy.i suggest if it was stated ask and make refences to the intial deal.
hold you fact .
if no amount was mentioned don't be the 1st to give afigure ask how much they r willing to add.then if it does fit negotiate a higher one.
And please don't attach personal reasons to why you need a raise.Make it as professional as posible.
It worked in my formal employment so i know.assuming u r here in 9ja

I think its all about your work, if you know your company cannot do without you then you have a good chance for playing games like Kimba but if your people feel that they can do without you then you may be in trouble if you play Kimba's game.
You see, we all believe in ourselves and mostly believe that because we are really good the company can't do without us, but let me shock you, some bosses don't appreciate or recognise good work.
My advice is ask for a rise, if your boss really thinks he can't do without you, he or she will give you. don't play risky games because its difficult to get a job in naija

IMHO,

The way you present yourself at work determines a whole lot about your salary range and raise. I speak from an American perspective. I don't know where the original author of the question is.

From my experience, if you present yourself to oyibo as desperate ("i'll do anything for the team", "team player", etc), na so dem go dey treat you. They will think they can toy with you as if you do gra gra, and dem fire you, you no get choice. On the other hand, if like me, you treat your job like a job (in other words, you can always go somewhere else anytime, even if you no get kobo for account cool), they respect you more and before you know it, na dem go dey approach you for raise, bonus, etc. Again, I speak from experience. I have been on both sides of the fence, so I think I know what I am talking about.

, and that's my 2 cents

It depends on your progress and the progress of the company. If the company is not hiring any new person while their income grows, then u might be confortable enough to ask for a raise. But if the company is not making progress, u better not ask especially when there are other people waiting to take ur job
