I think that people should not date others when in a relationship. this goes for men and women and this is my very personal opinion. BUT you can date as many people as you like if you're not in a relationship ad trying to find a partner.

moreover, I don't believe any sane mama would advise her daughter to sleep with different men.
and I guess this is what the poster's mum was trying to say: check all options that you have before you enter marriage. there is nothing wromg with it. at the end: it is suppossed to be a life-long commitment. so CHOOSE and choose WISELY. but to choose you have to check your options.
