I just want to know the general of the 'atheist' populace....Do you believe in existence of E.T in any form?
Re: Atheists: Do You Believe In Extra-terrestials? by Nobody: 9:18pm On Jul 15, 2012
It'll be cool if they did exist, wouldn't it? Me personally I'm rooting for the Klingons and Galliefreyans. grin cool

Belief is for religious folks.
From what we know about life, the earth and universe, the existence of Extra-terrestials should be a matter of certainty, not belief.

If you're referring to UFOs, then no. There is no evidence that we've ever been visited by extraterrestrials. Those who believe that we have are just deceiving themselves.

On the other hand, if you're asking if life exists on other planets, then yes, I do believe it does. There are an unimaginably large number of stars in the universe. If you add to that the evidence from the Kepler telescope that extrasolar planets are extremely common, It seems really unlikely that earth is the only place where life has taken root.

However, given the huge distances involved, its very unlikely that we'll ever encounter another intelligent species barring a major breakthrough in physics.

Whose physics, ours or theirs?
C'mon man, our civilisation is a little 4000yrs old,our technological advancements came in the last 100yr or so.
If we simply cannot conquer the vastness of space with our our mechanical rocket technology, should we asume that of off planet civilisations that are perhaps tens of thousands or even miilions of years ahead of us could not do so?
c'mon.

UFO, no, no. Its more like USA.

The scale of the universe DEMANDS other life forms. I intend to leave my billionsgrin to NASA.

Or atleast support its privatization. Imagine discussing NASA of USA when I'm not even a citizen.

Is it also logical to assume that God is likely to exist but has not been observed yet....?

The conditions that sustain life on Earth is likely to be present in some other part of the universe.

A God should be readily observable like gravity. If he decides to hide himself(deism) then it follows he doesn't want us to bother about him.

See me, thinking you wanted an honest discussion on ET.

Sometimes you sound like a theist.
Re: Atheists: Do You Believe In Extra-terrestials? by Nobody: 1:31am On Jul 16, 2012
WE OURSELVES ARE EXTRATERRESTRIALS.

And, considering the size of the universe, it would be the height of foolishness and ignorance to assume for even one second that we are the only place on it that's home to intelligent life.

Let me break it down a little (and this is all based on modern scientific knowledge).

Proportionally speaking, if our Milky Way galaxy were to be the size of the earth, earth would be twenty times smaller than a single grain of sand on it. That is the size of the earth in relation to our Milky Way galaxy.

Our galaxy is one of over 200 billion galaxies in the universe, some larger in size and some smaller (Our galaxy is just small to average-sized).

Now, do you still think the earth is the only place in the universe with intelligent life?

At the end of the day, we are all theist even though some people choose to live in denial primarily becos of their disdain for religion.

I think it goes the opposite way. At the end, we are all atheist to different gods..

It is possible. That there might be life in other galaxies.

-We know what life is (we are alive and we have studied different animals)
-We know that other planets exist

While it is a possibility, I will believe when we get evidence.

There has got to be some form of life somewhere else if we believe life just sprung up here. It's probabilistically solid ground. But I also don't believe the chance of life forms from different planets interacting is likely. It's like time travel. If it were possible, surely someone from the future would have visited us by now. And before now. And later and etc. You can see how this disintegrates into madness.
Re: Atheists: Do You Believe In Extra-terrestials? by Nobody: 9:51pm On Jul 16, 2012
Guys I've got this theory. It's kinda far-fetched, but just consider it for a minute: with the rate at which the US is releasing alien movies (Avatar, The Avengers, Thor, Prometheus, Man Of Steel), do you think they're tryna "prepare" us for something? Sorta "numbing" or reactions to their press conference that aliens have been among us all this while. Whad'ya think?

Yea and the dominance of chemistry in the universe. Probably distance will be the eternal obstruction btw us and them.

On time travel, I enjoy the time theme in the Terminator series. The future becomes part of the past and present, fused into one and destroying the common perception of linear time. We MIGHT be experiencing time travellers, but to unsteady to grasp.

It's a possibility.

However, maybe they are just making the movies in reflection of the advancement of science?

I've thought about it this too....but barring a very major breakthrough in physics i think we may never really know but maybe in future we will master inter-galactic travel

Isn't it possible the Big Bang created life elsewhere?

As much as time travel fascinates me, I don't believe it's possible. I don't believe it's possible even theoretically. It's possibility would be outside any laws we know. First, it's possibility would mean an endless number of alternative times. Endless. I don't wanna bore with why I think it's impossible. I believe time can be slowed down or quickened but this is just common sense. But a jump forward? No. A jump backward? An even bigger NO!

Simply beat the speed of light. Which might be impossible. I hope I'm wrong.
