[b]Flying Eagles Striker Christian Pyagbara Arrives Tunisia For Esperance

Allnigeriasoccer.com can confirm a report by Radio Mosaïque FM that Nigeria Under 20 international Christian Pyagbara arrived in Tunisia on Monday morning to begin talks with Esperance.

The deal is being brokered by Tunisian - based Mahmoud Ouaddeni, the same individual that recommended Flying Eagles striker Bernard Bulbwa to The Blood and Gold in April.

“Christian Pyagbara arrived Tunis two hours ago. Negotiations have not yet started, we are hoping to conclude in the next two to three days, ” said Ouaddeni to allnigeriasoccer.com.

The 19 - year - old could be a replacement for another target Taiwo Awoniyi, who has stated in clear terms he is not intersted in moving to North Africa.

Pyagbara was earlier linked with a move to Club Africain but they ended their pursuit after his agent demanded a transfer fee of $3 million.

[b]Tension mounts as knockout ties begin

The temperature is sure to rise in New Zealand on Wednesday as the Round of 16 gets under way at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the first eight teams knowing that even the slightest mistake could leave them packing their bags for home.

The opening instalment of games features a pair of continental jousts as Serbia take on Hungary and Mali get to grips with Ghana. A little later in the day, Colombia will tackle USA in what ought to be a very open encounter, while Ukraine and Senegal will bring their contrasting styles to bear in Auckland.

Match of the day
Serbia-Hungary, Dunedin, 10 June 2015, 16.00 (local time)

Having recorded two wins and a loss in the group stage, Serbia will go into their all-European tie in the south of New Zealand hopeful of prevailing against opponents who posted the inverse record. They will nonetheless be wary of a Hungary team boasting similar qualities to their own, with the neighbouring nations both playing a pleasing style of expansive and attacking football with no obvious flaws.

Veljko Paunovic's charges undoubtedly have momentum on their side, however, after recovering from their opening 1-0 loss to Uruguay to claim consecutive wins – in contrast to Hungary, who swept aside Korea DPR 5-1 before promptly being beaten twice. That said, those results raise the possibility that over-confidence, or lost confidence, could be among the keys to this game, along with the form of influential Hungarian duo Zsolt Kalmar and Bence Mervo, and Serbian pair Andrija Zivkovic and Nemanja Maksimovic.

The other matches
While those European rivals tussle for a quarter-final spot, Ghana and Mali will be locking horns in an all-African affair in Wellington – a rematch of their play-off for third place at the 2015 CAF African U-20 Championship, which Ghana won 3-1. Neither goalkeeper Djigui Diarra nor star midfielder Adama Traore featured in that game for Mali, however, and given how both have performed in New Zealand, Les Aiglons will be gunning for a different outcome.

Fans across the Atlantic will be glued to the second match in Wellington, meanwhile, as Colombia test their mettle against USA. Los Cafeteros have had a low-key tournament thus far, although there is no doubting their attacking potential with the likes of Steven Lucumi in their ranks. The Stars and Stripes have been similarly enigmatic and blew hot and cold during the group stage, but, in Emerson Hyndman and Rubin Rubio, they have players capable of making the difference at any moment.

Lastly, Ukraine will start as favourites on paper against Senegal given their clear strength at both ends of the pitch. Yet to concede, they possess the meanest defence in the competition as well as the top scorer in five-goal Viktor Kovalenko, but they will need to beware Senegal's ability to raise their game in knockout contests. Les Lionceaux did exactly that at the most recent African U-20 Championship, eventually taking themselves all the way to the final.

Player to watch
Kovalenko has been turning heads since the tournament began, and rightly so, but praise is no less due to his team-mate Bohdan Sarnavskyi. Impeccable between the posts, the Ukraine goalkeeper has yet to fish the ball out of his net at this U-20 World Cup and will be looking to extend his run against Senegal, the least prolific of the last-16 contenders with just three goals under their belts. As he explained to FIFA.com: "In Ukraine, we have a saying: 'What soldier does not dream of becoming a general?' That's true for us as well. We didn't come to here to make up the numbers."

The stat
6 – The Round of 16 contains representatives from all six confederations for only the fourth time in U-20 World Cup history, after the 1997, 2001 and 2003 editions also featured a clean sweep at this stage. Meanwhile, just three of South America's four contenders have survived this time around, CONMEBOL having sent its full complement through to the knockout phase in each of the last eight final tournaments.

The words
An exciting round of 16 game on Wednesday against #Ghana 100% Africa Thanks for your support #GHAMLI #U20WC #AllezMali – Adama Traore, Mali attacking midfielder

Match schedule
Round of 16 - 10 June 2015
Ghana-Mali (Wellington, Westpac Stadium, 16.00)
Serbia-Hungary (Dunedin, Forsyth Barr Stadium, 16.00)
USA-Colombia (Wellington, Westpac Stadium, 19.30)
Ukraine-Senegal (Auckland, North Harbour Stadium, 19.30)

[b]The Donetsk duo lighting up New Zealand

"Normally, the loser buys the Cokes. I'd say it's about 50-50 between us."

"50-50? He doesn't score at all!"

So it goes between New Zealand 2015's top scorer and the tournament's only unbeaten keeper. Viktor Kovalenko and Bohdan Sarnavskyi, friends and team-mates with Ukraine and Shakhtar Donetsk, are discussing their duels during free-kick practice in training. And the former's success rate is causing some debate.

Sarnavskyi is the first to soften. "Viktor is very good at free-kicks, so he gets a few past me," the keeper says of Ukraine's star forward, scorer of a superb set piece in the 3-0 win over USA. "I don't make it easy for him, but he's a great player."

Kovalenko's class has been evident in all three of Ukraine's matches, and in every one of his five goals thus far. But the full extent of his potential was revealed by the scintillating second-half hat-trick that undid the Americans, taking Ukraine through as Group A winners.

"You wouldn't know to see him on the field that he's a year younger than everyone else in the team," said Sarnavskyi. "He is much stronger than most of the players in this tournament and I'm sure that won't be his last hat-trick at a World Cup."

Ukraine's coach, Oleksandr Petrakov, had been prepared to go further still. Spurning the traditional tactic of relieving pressure on young players by playing down hype and expectations, he made clear his expectations for Kovalenko. "Am I surprised he is top scorer? Not at all," said Petrakov. "He should be top scorer and he should finish the tournament as top scorer. And I'm sure he will."

Quite a statement. And yet, when informed of this prediction, Sarnavskyi didn't bat an eyelid. "I agree with the coach," came his deadpan reply. "In fact, I'm pretty confident about it."

Back home, we have an expression that says, 'What soldier doesn't want to be a general?' That counts for us here.

Bohdan Sarnavskyi on Ukraine's goal of reaching the final

As for Kovalenko himself, the swagger with which he plays is nowhere to be seen in his off-field demeanour. But amid the youthful shyness, there is a steely determination not to become distracted by targets he perceives to be essentially selfish.

"Honestly, I'm not even thinking about that," he said of the top-scorer race. "Personal awards should always be secondary in a team sport. My only ambition is for Ukraine. I want us to reach the final."

Few would have envisaged that being a realistic target before this tournament kicked off. However, the eastern Europeans' performances have led to a reassessment of the team's potential, and Sarnavskyi shares his team-mate's ambition.

"Back home, we have an expression that says, 'What soldier doesn't want to be a general?' That counts for us here. We don't want to be just another team at this tournament."

If Ukraine are winning the battle to achieve something extraordinary, it is not solely due to Kovalenko's goalscoring. At the other end of the field, Sarnavskyi has lived up to his reputation as one of his position's rising stars, emerging from the group phase having registered three clean sheets and one superb penalty save.

"He's a good friend of mine, but anyone can see that he is a great keeper," Kovalenko said. "To have kept a clean sheet in every match - how can we ask anything more?"

But just as Ukraine's talented forward is resisting the desire to chase the top-scorer award, so their equally impressive keeper is unmoved by talk of the tournament's goalkeeping equivalent: the adidas Golden Glove.

"It would be nice, but I'm not here for that trophy," he said. "If my team wins the World Cup and another goalkeeper gets that award, I definitely won't be disappointed.

"I'm very happy we're the only team not have to conceded here, but that is a great achievement which is not only mine. As for saving the penalty, let's just say I have my secrets. I also saved one in the European Championship last year, so I suppose I'm doing something right."

Neither overplays the issue, but it is also true that Kovalenko and Sarnavskyi have the most compelling source of motivation. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has forced the Shakhtar duo to relocate to Kiev, has taken a heavy toll on everyone in their squad and throughout their home country. If they are chasing a place in the final, it is - as Petrakov told FIFA.com before the tournament - for a simple reason. "We owe it to all the people back home."

"We definitely feel the same," was Sarnavskyi's response. "The main satisfaction in what we've done so far has been making our people happy."

Thanks to those group-stage successes, Ukraine's U-20s are already guaranteed a warm reception when they arrive home. But with Kovalenko's goals and Sarnavskyi's saves propelling their medal quest, don't bet on them making that return journey any time soon.

[b]Better late than never for livewire Kone

“Don’t worry boss,” said Senegal star Moussa Kone. “I’ll sort this problem out for us.” The problem in question was that time was running out for the Senegalese in their final Group C match against Qatar at the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

With just a point to their name going into the game, Les Lionceaux were being held to a 1-1 draw with just nine minutes left – nine minutes for them to save their campaign and avoid an early exit. It was then that Kone, whose performances had yet to reach the standard expected by Senegal’s smiling but demanding coach Joseph Koto, finally made his presence felt, slamming in the winner from close range to take his side through a Round-of-16 tie against Ukraine.

“Scoring that second goal generated a lot of different emotions,” Kone told FIFA.com ahead of this Wednesday’s big match. “It’s a dream come true to be playing in the World Cup, and scoring such an important goal makes it even more special.”

The leading scorer in the Senegalese second division this season, Kone has been beaming away ever since finding the back of the net on Saturday, a goal he celebrated by running to the touchline to hug his coach. “It was a release for him,” said Koto.

“When he scored he came to me and said: ‘Boss, I did it!’. I’ve been at him since the start because he hasn’t been showing me what I wanted. He has a very important role in our team because modern football is played on the flanks. Moussa and Ibou Wadji are so important to us and I expect a lot of them.”

A former Senegal international, Koto was a right winger in his playing days, the selfsame position in which he decided to deploy Kone at the CAF African U-20 Championships.

It is not a role to which the free-scoring Kone, who plays as an out-and-out striker for his club side Dakar Sacre-Coeur, is accustomed, as he explained: “They call me ‘Suarez’ here in the national team after the Barcelona player, Luis. I like his style and I try to copy it. People compare me to him. I watch his videos and analyse how he runs into space, how he plays and how he tries to take his chances.”

Striving for more
Koto has spotted his potential for something different, however. “Moussa is a very versatile player and we really needed someone on the right wing,” explained the persuasive coach. “He’s got pace and he’s willing to learn so we decided to play him there in the African championships. He did a great job for us and we’ve left him there.”

Koto added: “Kone is a great player but you haven’t seen what he can do yet. He has tremendous potential and he can get an awful lot better yet, but he’s also a very sensitive person, which is why he hasn’t yet produced the football I want to see from him. I hope he’s going to start growing in confidence now. I don’t want to give him any excuses and I expect a lot more of him.”

Still only 18, Kone is learning his trade but is more than ready for the challenges that lie ahead, having already overcome a few obstacles in his short career. “Starting out was very tough for me and I’ve had some really difficult moments in football,” he revealed. “I’m very happy to be playing at the World Cup but I have to say that I’ve only got this far because I’ve worked hard.

“Nobody believed in me because I was very small, but I’ve always had faith in myself and in my talent. I knew I could achieve something one day. My family has always supported me and I’m going to stay on the same path so that people can get to know me really well.”

The Olympique Marseille scouts watching Kone’s progress in New Zealand do not seem to have any issues with his height. Standing 5’9 tall, the Senegal forward even draws motivation from his relative lack of stature. “I am a little bit on the small side,” he said. “I know I am, and thinking like a small player makes me work even harder, so I’m just going to carry on thinking that way. My goal at the end of it all is to make myself known in the football world for who I am: Moussa Kone.”

[b]Aboagye recovers for Mali clash

Ghana have been habded a timely boost ahead of their round if 16 clash with Mali at the U-20 World Cup.

The Black Satellites will have captain Clifford Aboagye available when they lock horns with the Malians for the third running in about three months.

Aboagye picked up a knock and was subsequently substituted in the first half of Ghana's 2-1win over Panama last Friday and had been feared to be on the verge of missing the last 16 knockout encounter.

Team doctor Pambo has however allayed such fears as he confirms the Granada midfielder's return to training in Wellington on Monday.

"We have been working tirelessly on Aboagye since the injury against Panama," the Satellites' head of medics said.

"He has recovered so well and was able to train unscathed with the rest of yhe team today (Monday). We have passed him fit and available for selection on Wednesday should the coaches decide ti field him. Aboagye is fit now," Dr. Pambo affirmed.

Aboagye's availability for the tricky third ckashat 4am GMT (6am CAT) on Wednesday comes in handy as his presence since the second group game against Argentina has brought a whole new dimension to the coach Sellas Tetteh side.

In their two games at the 2015 Africa Youth Championship, Mali first defeated the Black Satellites 1-0 but the young Ghanaians secured a 3-1 victory when it mattered most in the third place finals.

[b]Eagles now in top gear – NFF boasts

Apparently basking in the euphoria of the resurgence of the national U-20 team, the Flying Eagles in the ongoing FIFA World youth Championship (AYC) in New Zealand, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said the U-20 team of Germany would not pose any threat to the dream of the Flying Eagles to reach the finals of the championship as they clash in the second round of the championship on Thursday.

Chairman of the technical committee of the NFF, Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu told the Sporting media yesterday in Abuja that the defeat of Nigeria by Brazil was a blessing in disguise because it re awakened the desire of the players to play well on the championship which they are competing as African champions.

“I think there is no stopping the Flying Eagles. Even though they are playing Germany who are also the European champions, I strongly believe that the team is confident enough to pick the final ticket in this championship.

“Our loss in the first match to Brazil was enough to put them back in shape. What happened to them against Brazil was a wake up call which they have heeded and bounced back. They would have been filled with over confidence if they had won that match. With their current form, I do not see them falling to Germany on Thursday. They only have to maintain their form because this is the knockout stage of the tournament.”Anyansi stated.

The chairman of Enyimba International of Aba also reacted to the issue of Manchester City player, Kelechi Iheanacho warning that the character he exhibited when he was substituted could not be described as indiscipline even as he insisted that any player could start a game from the bench because all the 21 players in camp satisfied the coach before he selected them.

According to him the coaches were right to keep Iheanacho on the bench, because despite the fact that he is one of the best rated players in the team, the fact that he has not been with the team for a long time was enough for him to be on the bench.

“Iheanacho is one of the best rated players in the team, but it is obvious that he has been out of the team for a long time. So it is not out of place for him to start from the bench if the coach decides so. He could study the game from the bench and come in to play the role of the joker. I know he has that capacity. Now that he has trained together with his colleagues for some time, I think he can still play the major role that he is noted for in the team. No particular player is indispensable in the team” Anyansi insisted.

[b]Glo Urges Manu’s Boys to Fly over Germany

Major sponsor of Nigerian national teams, Globacom Limited, has urged the Flying Eagles to fly over their German counterparts when they clash on Thursday in the second round match at the on-going FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The Manu Garba-coached Nigerian junior national team scaled through to the second round by defeating Hungary by 2 – 0 on Sunday to qualify for the knockout stage that has pitched the team against Germany.

“The Flying Eagles are back in contention and we believe they will sharpen their skills as they advance in the competition,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos on Monday.

“The high-scoring German side is a hard nut to crack but we have strong faith in the ability of Flying Eagles to get the victory from this encounter to qualify for the quarter finals,” Globacom further stated.

It charged the team to go the extra mile and re-invent the “can-do spirit” and determination which Nigeria is known for and which won the nation the U-17 World Cup in Dubai in 2013 and the recent African Youth Championship in Senegal.

The telecommunications operator advised the Flying Eagles’ technical crew to work on the team’s defence to ensure that they are tactically ready to ward off the German attack that scored 16 goals during the group stage.

The company further urged the Nigerian team's handlers to evolve a winning formula that would put the encounter beyond their opponent.

Globacom is the official telecommunications partner of the Nigeria Football Federation and the major sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.

From my research, Germany is actually a not-too-fantastic side. Here are the results of their last 10 matches

Honduras U20 Germany U20 1 : 5

Germany U20 Uzbekistan U20 3 : 0

Germany U20 Fiji U20 8 : 1

Italy U20 Germany U20 2 : 1

Germany U20 Poland U20 1 : 2

Poland U20 Germany U20 0 : 2

Germany U20 Switzerland U21 1 : 1

Netherlands U20 Germany U20 1 : 1

Germany U20 Turkey U20 1 : 0

Germany U20 England U20 0 : 1

Let me break this down:

Prior to the World Cup, they played 7 matches and only scored 8 goals. They played against fairly good teams and scored an average of a goal per match. They lost 3 times, drew 2 times, and won 2 times. In fact, they lost against teams that didnt qualify for the World Cup.

What does that tell you? I leave you to be the judge.

@leecodeman. your analysis was good but u don't judge by none competitive matches , you added preparatory matches which were the friendlies they played , if we are to go by number of friendlies the super flying eagles has played then we will be counting up to 30goals in the last 10matches and that record will make the German look like the cheap side ,I would have preferred u base ur analysis on number of games the Germans has played in this competition goals scored , and goals conceded .also number of times we have met at this age grade completion

The German machines has has about 6 of their players on the scoring sheet in which 3 of them has registered 3 goals each in this competition and variably others have scored 2goals and 1 goal respectively .in total they have scored total of 16goals in 3matches

. Meaning they re the team with the highest number of goals. On the average they have scored 5.5 goals per match .
Conceded only 2 . Average of about 0.8 goal per match .

On the super flying eagles side . We have also played total number of 3 matches. With 8goals to show for it average of about 2.8 goals per match .also we have conceded the same number of goal in this competition 2goals in 3matches ,average of about 0.8 goal per. Also ,we have about 5players on the scoring sheet ,3 players with 2 goals each and others with 1 goal respectively .

We have met Germany at this age grade level 3times,German won twice and we had a win .

We are under 20 African champion and the German are under 20 Europe champion .

From this analysis it means the German has a edge over us in terms of goals scoring and past record . But I believe the super flying eagles can do wonders ,and are equal to the task by leveling their ability with the German and also surpass them with number of goals at the end of 90 mins . One thing will work for us ...#team work and ,individual brilliance will spice it up !

#Go super flying eagles

@lexyman u rate this german side with the cheap goals they ve scored against cheap and weak opposition in their group so far? did they play any tough opposition? NO! so why re u rating them so highly? leecodeman just dug up their past 10 matches and the results have been depressing to say the least, these guys are over-rated, lee also made valid points here about the teams the german side fell to during their past 7 matches did not even qualify for this tourney, that should tell us something, that should not reduce the fact that they re a good side, they are good but i dont think they can cope with the firepower our boys posses. they would be beaten clean and fair come thurs. bookmark this page and quote me later, im 100% confident our boys will humble this german team. the land is green. go flying eagles, GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cmon man...Germany was also not that impressive in their UEFA Championship either.

Against the strong teams, they struggled.

2-2 against Serbia

2-0 against Ukraine

Lost 5-1 against Austria, though later beat them in the return leg

1-1 against Slovakia

Laboured to beat Portugal 1-0

Nothing brilliantly impressive here. Where are the 8-1, 4-1 and 3-0 they beat the Fijis, Uzbekistans and the Hondurans?

The way they are being hyped, you would think they score nothing less than 3 goals in every match.

[b]Four-goal Mervo revelling in new role

“I love playing on the wing, especially out on the left, and that’s where I play for my club. The thing is, they said I’m a striker!”

Those words, uttered almost disbelievingly to FIFA.com, belong to Hungary’s Bence Mervo, one of the revelations of the group phase at the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

The smiling front man has taken everyone by surprise with his effectiveness in front of goal, not least himself, having struck four times so far in the competition, a statistic that should leave no one in any doubt that Hungary possess a No9 that can help them revive memories of their glorious past.

“It was my coach Bernd Storck who came up with the idea of playing me in a different position,” explained Mervo. “It’s worked out very well for me, though, and the goals I’ve scored have made me start to believe.”

The new front man has had a while to get used to his role, having appeared in the No9 jersey in the team brochure handed out by Hungarian FA before the start of the tournament.

Discussing his recent conversion, he said: “Our masseur Miki started calling me ‘Mr Goal’ at the end of a training session and it stuck. My team-mates have all been calling me that ever since. I like it, especially as it’s thanks to them that I’ve got to where I am today.”

Those selfsame team-mates, led by Donat Zsoter with two assists, helped Mervo score a superb hat-trick as Hungary kicked off their tournament with a handsome 5-1 defeat of Korea DPR.

That treble was the first by a Hungarian player in an U-20 World Cup match, with Mervo becoming only the fourth Magyar ever to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup competition. That select band also includes Laszlo Kiss (the very first substitute to score a world finals hat-trick, at Spain 1982) and two other greats of Hungarian football in Florian Albert, who achieved the feat at Chile 1962, and Sandor Kocsis, who scored two hat-tricks at Switzerland 1954.

“Hungary has a wonderful footballing history,” said the youngster, who plays for FC Gyori. “I have a huge amount of respect for all the compatriots who have gone before me in the World Cup, including Albert, Kocsis and Kiss obviously. Who wouldn’t?

“If there is one player who stands out from the rest for me, though, it has to Ferenc Puskas. He’s the best Hungary has ever produced.”

Continuing to list his goalscoring heroes, the wide man-turned-striker added: “Apart from Puskas, I’m a huge admirer of Brazil’s Ronaldo. He was amazing. He also had the ability to recover from some tough times in his career and get back to the top of his game, which was incredible.”

A born No9
O Fenomeno’s compatriots saw Mervo’s finishing skills at first hand in Hungary’s second outing in Group E, the front man scoring his side’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat, a game in which the Hungarians were reduced to ten men after only half an hour.

Mervo went goalless in the opening 45 minutes of Hungary’s final group game against Nigeria before coming off at half-time, powerless to prevent his side slipping to a 2-0 defeat.

“They were very tough opponents and one of the best teams in the competition, if you ask me,” said Mervo, who found central defender Abdullahi Mustapha-Onyinye Ndidi hard to shake off: “I got the feeling after the Korea DPR match that the marking was a bit tighter on me. It made things that little bit tougher.”

Whatever the treatment he gets from opposing defenders, the exciting Mervo can look forward to a rewarding career at the highest level. A modest young man with both feet on the ground, his progress in New Zealand is being tracked by a clutch of European scouts.

“I’m just like any other guy my age,” he explained. “I’m not married yet and I don’t have children, and I enjoy all the pleasures that life has to offer me: music, working out and football, of course.”

And what better for a young footballer than pursuing his passion for the game at a World Cup finals? “Yes, it’s just fantastic, especially as we’ve qualified for the second round. My four goals have counted for something, and my country can be really proud of us.”

He added: “We’re not going to settle for that though. I want more and if I’m going to get it, I need to keep on improving.”

Yet as Mervo has already shown at New Zealand 2015, Hungary have produced a No9 they can believe in.

Isaac Success pays Awoniyi bonus for Hungary brace

Flying Eagles striker Isaac Success has paid out a bonus of $200 to fellow striker Taiwo Awoniyi after his goals against Hungary.

Granada striker Success had promised Awoniyi the cash before the match and he made good his promise when the lanky striker hit a brace on Thursday in New Plymouth.

“He paid Awoniyi from his match bonus from the game,” disclosed a team official.

Asked who will be the next beneficiary of his generosity, Success simply smiled before he said, “We just have to wait and see.”

Awoniyi tops the goals' chart for the Flying Eagles with two goals and two assists, while Godwin Saviour has two goals and an assist.

Success has also scored twice while Sokari and Musa Yahaya have scored once.

@Joseph. Why not edit the last sentence. They are incorrect. Some of these journalists don't watch matches at all.
@Watchindelta. And on Germany, hmmm...they are not over-hyped. They are very clinical and shoot accurately. If we slip a bit, that's it.

[b]Sokari, Ifeanyi Matthew resume training with Flying Eagles

Enyimba midfielder Kingsley Sokari and Ifeanyi Matthew from El Kanemi both trained with the Flying Eagles ahead of Thursday’s U20 World Cup Round of 16 clash against Germany in Christchurch.

Sokari suffered a knock on his ankle in the team’s final group game against Hungary and was replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho in the 82nd minute.

He did not show any ill effects from the knock as he took part in all the exercises.

Matthew, on the other hand, has missed the last two games against North Korea and Hungary after he suffered a deep cut in the foot in the opening game against Brazil.

The El Kanemi Warriors star trained with the rest of the squad as they prepare to take on Germany, who topped their first round group in style by posting a +14 goals difference.

The squad rounded up their work out with all players taking part in the penalty shootout, which could well determine the team for the quarterfinals should a winner not be decided even after extra time.

Goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo looked good at stopping and scoring from the penalty spot.

Taiwo Awoniyi, Bernard Bulbwa, Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali easily put away their kicks.

[b]Flying Eagles fight off chill, wind for Germany

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles had to battle the cold and wind for their first training at the Ferrymead Park in Christchurch ahead of Thursday’s U20 World Cup Round of 16 clash against Germany.

Tuesday night’s training was under floodlights under a cold chill with a strong wind. The temperature was put at a “warm” 16 degrees, but locals warned that it will be much colder on match day as forecasts say it will be between 10-0 degrees then.

However, fullback Mustapha Abdullahi said he was not affected by the adverse weather conditions.

“I like playing under the cold because I last a lot longer, I don't get tired easily. Once you get properly warmed up, you will be fine,” he said.

Skipper Musa Mohammed missed the session as he was at the dentist over a bad tooth ache.

“I feel a lot better now and I will be ready to play on Thursday,” Mohammed reassured on his return from the dentist.

Team spirit was sky-high as players sang on their way from training to their Rydges Hotel, which was completely rebuilt after it was partially destroyed during the February 2011 earthquake which killed 185 people.

The players’ confidence was further boosted when Nigerian residents in Christchurch treated them to local dishes of Semovita, pounded yam with Egusi soup.

The team’s final training will be a 1pm local time on Wednesday.

The match will kick off at 7.30 pm on Thursday, which is 8.30am in Nigeria.
