DID ANYONE READ WHAT I WROTE OR GO TO THE SITE I SENT YALL. MOST OF YOU ARE HERE GIVING YOUR OPINION ON WHAT THE RED HAT IS. THE FACT IS..CHILDREN AND NON TITLED MEN SHOULD NOT BE WEARING IT PERIOD.IT IS DISRESPECTFUL TO OUR FOREFATHERS AND IGBO TRADITIONS. YES IN ABIA,especially ngwa where my mom's people are from wear the knitted red, black and white santa claus hat looking. Keep in mind each clan have their own regular chief hats, then as you gain more titles you gain different hats. THE RED HAT IS THE ONLY PERMANENT HAT IN ALL IGBO CLAN...BECAUSE ITS MEANT FOR WARRIORS!! THE BLACK HAT>>MOST PEOPLE NEVER ACHIEVE TITLES TO THAT LEVEL. There is the tall red hat..worn by deltans and ikwerre igbo..then small red one worn mostly in anambra, enugu, the black by higher ranking members that the king blesses( its special, but the red over powers it in certain decision making-according to my maternal grandpa..depends on the situation. The red is usually given to those who are wariors and black to non wariors..red signifies..blood and earth). My grandpa also says in order to truly be accoladed with the red hat and black and raccon tail hat(red, black and white knitted one) you must be able to speak in adages, write in nsibidi and understand them. There are so many rules. you cannot just shake..you must use your nkupe, odu nnama, or back of your hand to greet three times, then pull apart and snap your hand as a sign of respect and understanding...and while doing all these you are praising eachother in proverbs if you are found to be a fake you are usually banished from the land..That is where many secret society rules draw from.. and only those bestowed the honor can know it. SO WHEN THIS GENERATION STARTS DESTROYING THE SACRED TRADITIONS OUR FOREFATHERS LEFT FOR US, THINK TWICE BECAUSE YOUR CHILDREN WILL ONLY FOLLOW WHAT YOU TEACH. WHEN YOU WEAR THE SAME RED HAT YOUR TITLED FATHER OR GRANDFATHER WEARS..YOU ARE DISRESPECTING HIM< NOT HONORING HIM, CAUSE YOU ARE BASICALLY TELLING HIM THAT YOU ARE MATES< AND THAT HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AMOUNTS TO NOTHING.
Common lil girl, spare your long silly sermon in this thread. If I wear a red hat, then you should come and arrest me. What sort of nonsense are you preaching here. We all know the significance of the red hat, but this is a modern era, people wear what they like. Have you not seen people wearing a neclace with cross yet they are not xtians. Why not go and preach to them.
The Igbo people of today wear the red hat as fasion and it fits them well that is what matters. No need foaming through your yeye mouth on who should wear the red hat or not. I hope this will settle in your tiny brain.

I don't think we need to lay unnecessary emphasis on this hat of a thing. You can wear whatever you like including the Queen's crown but do not wear it to her domain period. An untitled man cannot wear the red heart in his village but can wear it else where. We all know this.

Why?

Because you missed the significance of the names they are given. Its like telling a doctor, i am only gonna call you your name your parents gave you,and will not recognize your accomplishments... yeah i didnt think so. Please dont take offense, its just that my grandfather was livid when he saw what i saw of children rocking the same hat he had received after fighting in wars and, that now children and young people who dont know the meaning just put it on for fashion sake. I hope you caught my flow. I meant no personal attack.

You did not understand his post perfectly, what he means is that the Igbo people can have an outfit which they have sold to outsiders just as Yorubas and Hausas have done.
His ideas are good.

so sell the outfit. why sell something meant only for respectable people and elders tomorrow you will tell me to sell the Chiefs staff. day after tomorrow, his throne or replicas like them. WTH? cant you respect culture for once. In my opinion, the red cap is like a trophy or a medal. you cant just buy a trophy from a store and say you won it!!! angry that shows what a degenerate you are. somethings ought to be as they are meant to be. the red cap encourages young Igbos to prove themselves to the world, in order to earn it. .angry

even the uk gives titles and honorifics such as Sir, Lord, etc. . you wont find commmon good-for-nothings wearing those titles. people strive to earn them. you cant just decrease its value or else this world will be filled with boors and useless peoples. .

When I made that statement I wasn't replying you, in a way what I said was supporting your stance. I mean't everyone should uphold the culture of their ancestors and that's it. There shouldn't be any forced attempt to 'create' a new general culture from other peoples customs and traditions.

I think you're right. I have always wondered why Igbos have refused to commercialized the red cap.

Nwokem, are you drunk or what? Do you even know the true meaning of the "okpu nmee" ? The hat was orininaly made for the "mburuchis"(apostles of the Nri religion). When you take the "Ozo" you become a holy man just like the "iyom"(for the females). You arent suppose to tell lies, sleep with another man's wife, bear false witness, take your neigbhors land,,kill someone unjustly, stay out late at night, get drunk in the public. Nobody is allowed to whistle at an "Ozo" man's house at night, disrespects him and an "onye Ozo" isnt suppose to engage in a fight. There are many rules that guides the "Ozo" traditions. The "Nze na Ozo" hat is not the only Igbo hat available. You are encouraging the bastardization of our beloved Nri tradition and I will advice you to step away! Obviously, you are very ignorant of the implications of that your stupid suggestion! Go to your Enugu land and create a hat so that all Igbos can wear it! I met a man in a trsditional wedding in Houston who had the red hat on. I approuched him politely and asked him if he is an "onye nze" and to my utmost surprise he doesnt even know what it is but he is wearing an "okpu nmee"! I told him to his face that he has no right to wear that hat if he is not an "onye nze" or an "Igwe" and he was looking at me in a crazy way. I got upset and walked out on him! If anybody wants to wear the red hat they should firstly learn the principle,go to "Agukwu Nri" or any of the "Umunri" towns and we will be more than glad to bestow one on them. My grandfather gave me and my younger brother the "Ozo" title at 18yrs and my greeting name is "Nwadialor" while my kid brother's is "Nwa no na ukpo eze". Do not insult the most holy and sacred "NRI" tradition. Ekeneem unu ncha.

Not all Igbo communities partake in Nze na Ozo or title taking. The red hat's significance is negligible in Abia, Rivers, Ebonyi, parts of Enugu, and in most of Imo.

I strongly disagree with you. All the Igbo elites wear the red hat except for "Ojukwu". Can you explain that ?

Oke-nmanwu Nwadiani Nri ekwusigo ife melu eme!

On a serious note....
I agree with what that you said. I would have reacted the same way if I saw a non-ekpe member parading an okpu mboko and an ukara wrapper.

The answer to this problem is, as Ezeagu put it, onyenye zawa ava nna ya.

In Abia and southern Ebonyi, the red hat is not regarded highly. Today, what little significance it may hold (if at all any) was spread by "Igbo consciousness": as things like Isi agu spread throughout Igboland, so did the red cap.

However, I must say that people don't usually wear red caps in my side of Igboland. Politicians wear okpu mboko (if they're ekpe members) or okpu agu. My own father, who used to be involved in Abia politics always wore his okpu mboko; I have never seen him wear a red cap.

This is how people dress in Eastern Igboland. Notice how these boys are either wearing okpu agu or okpu mboko.

Any attempt, made by anyone, to trample upon, or otherwise devalue and bastardize, a people's esteemed cultural heritage, is a categorical insult to the legitimacy of their cultural identity. And insults to cultural identity are often times taken very seriously.

So I can understand Anambra people's (and quite frankly, any people's) standoffish disposition, when explicit attempts are made by outsiders to compromise esteemed cultural heritage and identity.
Re: Disrespect Of The Red Cap And Igbo Traditions:i Blame Your Parents!! by NRIPRIEST(m): 2:20am On Aug 02, 2012
Andre Uweh: There are other colours e.g the one in photograph below. But the red hat is now an Igbo symbolism. It was meant for titled men but the Igbo society has now adopted it as gen Igbo attire not just meant for Ndi chiri echichi.

Andre nwanne, the "okpu nmee" wasnt originally made to include "titled me" but dtrictly for "ndi nze na ozo" and "ndi eze" and I think thats where you are getting it all wrong.

see these are the standard hats for non titled igbo men, the regular igbo hats... so if any igbo young mant wants to rock this as they put it...fine, but to wear you also have to be initiated into some kind of mmuo society. you know those that dresss like ekpoo...
