The definition of city varies from country to country... For example in the UK: A city in the UK is any town that has a cathedral... However, some of these so-called "cities" are more or less glorified towns... Personally, a city should have commercial, financial, and administrative districts - anything less, it's a glorified town IMO...

I asked my question specifically because of your statement that Abuja's relative lack of commercial/financial districts (at least vis-a-vis Lagos) means that it doesn't qualify to be called a city, an assertion I disagree with. Remember that Abuja was built PURPOSELY to serve as Nigeria's administrative capital. The fact that Abuja doesn't have so many industries or corporate head offices doesn't diminish it's status as Nigeria's capital city. My opinion.

Brasilia (Brazil) and Islamabad (Pakistan) are also purpose-built capitals. Would you say they don't deserve to be called cities as well?

Well like you said, the definition of a city varies from country to country, and indeed from person to person. Maybe the guy had Abuja's wide and tarred roads, relatively less traffic and absence of chaos (in the city centre, at least) in mind when describing it as "more of a city" than Lagos.

Abeokuta and Ibadan have a very rare beauty, but i agree, the tin roofs have to go. Idk why it's so difficult to ban them in nigeria the health implications alone are tremendous. Our average life expectancy would just 5 years easily.

Most people drink water that trickles from their rusty roofs during rain. You can't boil out the toxic elements in rust because they're not biological, they're chemical, so in all reality the people of these cities are drinking toxic chemicals regularly and we're wondering why people fall ill so often in Nigeria

Not only Abeokuta and Ibadan my dear. A lot of the cities and towns in Yorubaland have a very unique charm. I just love Ekiti towns especially. All we need is just facelifting all these infrastructures. Nigeria has got great touristic potentials.

The "charm" comes from the fact that development stopped in the western region since the demise of Awolowo. The Evenness of the rustic roofs is basically what gives that seeming charm from above the sky. Hit Ground and it all pales into squalor.
In other cities that are ancient like Benin, Enugu or Calabar, you have truckloads of modernity sitting side by side that ancient rustic feel. Meaning, despite their age development keeps progressing albeit slowly.

I love rustic though. I love rustic as in pictorally. Just wouldn't live under a rustic roof.

btw, ve once been to ogun state and like all Yoruba states all the houses are still colonial era unpainted or washed low houses, modernization has not penetrated there yet, nothing great to start a thread about. am just saying
