From your experience do you believe that over 90% of Igbo people are Christian? I'm starting to believe that there are more traditional Chi worshippers than is currently thought and this doesn't even include people who are also Christian but dabble in Chi worship. And then what about other religions that have newly come like Judaism and Islam?

I'm inclined to say that Igbo is predominantly Christian; nearing 100%. That the Igbo continue to celebrate and engage in traditional, cultural and social festivals and rites does not take away from the fact that the population will predominantly answer "Christian" and be quick to decline any association with "Traditionalism" and "Ritualism".

Its funny that so many Igbo people still don't know that Islam is growing very fast among them.
I was surprised recently when I watched a video clip of an Igbo-New Yorker lady named Ify Okoye on CNN fully covered in the Muslim hijab.
One will also be surprised at the Muslim population in Abia and Imo States.
So I don't believe in 99% theory.

There are millions of Igbos in this world and the Muslims amongst them are in their ten-thousands. So where the f0rk is the growing muslim population.
Why not say there is a growing population of Judaism religion in Igbo land.

There are countable Igbo Muslims and it ends there.

Igbo are Christians but nothing stops them from celebrating their cultural and traditional rites.

Which Igbo Muslims are in their ten-thousands? Where are they located? I've never seen an Igbo Muslim in real life except on tv where i saw one Alhaji Iheanacho. Igbo Christians make well over 95%.

I believe there are a few thousand that are Muslim (maybe over 5000), then a few hundred that are Jewish (maybe over 1000), then over hundreds of thousands that are traditional religion (maybe over 200,000). I have this large number because of dibia, priestesses, priests, and their followers/apprentices.

@ bolded

the lady seems to have a blog?

she said people told her to change her name to zainab but she refused to do so, preferring to keep her igbo name.

my guess is she doesnt want a name change because then she would not be easily identifiable as igbo.

Igbos are 95% xtians, weather it is original christian or ordinary xtians while a few thousands are traditinalist(ndi dibia) with 20 to 30 muslims pretenders.

I've only manage to see one Igbo 'fake musilm' though.
Re: Are Igbo People Really Over 90% Christian? by ezeagu(m): 5:25pm On Dec 06, 2012
Let's not forget people who don't have a religion as well which would probably be thousands.

I truly believe there are thousands of Igbo muslims (but probably under 10 thousand). I don't really buy over 95% claiming to be Christians (not including Christian upbringing) all over the world.

Where are you guys getting these "ten thousand" of Igbo muslims...I have never come accross an Igbo muslim in my whole life. We are 99% christans with the remaining one percent going to traditional religions, atheists and muslims.

I'm more interested in the actual estimate of traditional worshippers as I believe they are more than is though. I know this because many of the elderly practice traditional religions and there are many apprentices. I've met people who would not call themselves Christian. There's even a church that mixes traditional and Christian worship.

Are Sabaths not Christians?
Re: Are Igbo People Really Over 90% Christian? by madamebebe(f): 12:34am On Dec 07, 2012
No they are not. Sabbath keepers tend to worship the hebrew way or the 'old testerment' way. They do not even celebrate christmas/easter like 'christians' do. I might be wrong though

Smelly monkey, why not concentrate on converting your hausa brothers into paganism than wasting your time on the Igbo.
There are no pagans in Alaigbo and those people you think are pagans are actually christians but do observe traditional rites. Get it into your thick skull, fool.

Not really.

The matter of all Pagans , regardless of tribe, concerns me as well. therefore, as a Pagan, it is my unselfish duty to help brothers and sisters from other tribes,, in need.

There are enough Pagans in AlaIgbo. The priests for example are full time Pagans. i agree that many Igbos are part-time xtians, however there certainly are many full-time Pagan Igbos. for example, you can take some time out and watch that video posted by ezeagu. the Chief himself, thoguh a bit hesitant, mentions the disticntion between xtains and Pagans. he also takes a particular note in saying that even xtians worship the Sacred God / Guardian SPirit of Imoka on this day. you can see them all prostrating before the God of the land.

I am warning you now itself, that if you dont stop your man-worship and slave mentality asap , it will be the worse for you. The entire IgboLand will soon return to the true religion and then you will see what is to be seen . .
