The purpose for which the club is organized is as follows:
a. To promote the use of bicycles.
b. To promote bicycle use in a safe manner.
c. Health and fitness (weight loss and general fitness).
d. To promote public awareness of bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities on public roads.
e. To protect and defend the rights of bicyclists.
f. To promote a statewide bicycle system as a form of transportation.
g. To provide instruction as to the care and proper use of bicycles.
h. To provide an opportunity for members to socialize with others who have
an interest in bicycles.
i. To help promote unity in the family unit

More reasons that may make you join the club
- because you like to ride a bicycle.
- because you think you might like to ride.
- because you like someone who likes to ride.
- because you'd like to go on a ride and see how you like it,
- because you don't want to ride alone, and are looking for people to ride
- because if you have a flat tire you'd like to have other people around to help out!
- because you think it's important to encourage non-motorized forms of transportation.

We hope to have club units all over Lagos.

Finally! So, questions . . .

a)How old is the club?

b) Is there a website(facebook does not agree with me)? I belong to various biking clubs here and I especially like that I can check the website each day for rides and information on meet-ups.

c) What is required for membership?

d) Any events lined up?

Well, we are trying to get people interest first.
We plan to have a meeting soon to develop and draw up our programms for the year.
Qualification is 18 and above, interested in riding and ownership of a good bike.
We shall arrange group insurance for all registered members and so on.
Please join us, this is far overdue.

You know I have lost Kg's since I started. The last 3 days I have logged 44+km on my bicycle.

Even if you are only two, it is enough to start please. Lots of clubs here started out with only a handful of members here but now have grown to include thousands across the globe. I look forward to hearing of CRITICAL MASS AND NAKED BIKE RIDES in Nigeria. . . . well maybe not the nake_d bike ride. grin

Riding for weight loss?? Not sure of that one. I mean if you eat still the weight no go go anywhere. Bicycling is my primary mode of transportation here so I am passionate about seeing more people, especially across africa where it makes a lot of sense to jump on to this trend.

Why Cycling
Cyclists are a diverse group. Some ride fat tires down rocky trails, some of ride road bikes up burly hills, some of ride for sport and some of ride just for fun. Some ride for the adrenaline rush and some ride their bikes for basic transportation. But all can take advantage of the healthy benefits of cycling.

Bicycling, along with being the most efficient mode of human locomotion, is also one of the best all-around activities for improving our health. From head to toes, cycling’s health benefits are hard to beat.

Health Benefits of Cycling

Cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise
You can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and without spending a fortune. Many people are put off doing certain sports because of the high level of skill that seems to be required, or perhaps because they can’t commit to a team sport due to time pressures. Most of us know how to cycle and once you have learned you don’t forget. All you need is a bike, a half an hour here or there when it suits, and a bit of confidence.

Cycling builds strength and muscle tone
Contrary to normal perceptions, cycling is not a fitness activity that solely involves the legs. Cycling builds strength in a holistic manner since every single part of the body is involved in cycling.

Cycling increases muscle tone
Cycling improves general muscle function gradually, with little risk of over exercise or strain. Regular cycling strengthens leg muscles and is great for the mobility of hip and knee joints. You will gradually begin to see an improvement in the muscle tone of your legs, thighs, rear end and hips.

Cycling builds stamina
Cycling is a good way to build stamina. It is very effective in doing so,
because people enjoy cycling and they wouldn’t really notice that they have
gone farther the last time they went cycling.

Cycling improves cardio-vascular fitness
Cycling makes the heart pound in a steady manner and helps improve cardio-vascular fitness. Studies have shown that cycling to work will increase cardiovascular fitness by 3-7%. Cycling uses the largest muscle groups the legs, raising heart rate to benefit stamina and fitness.

Cycling eats up calories
Cycling is a good way to lose those unwanted kilos. Steady cycling burns approximately 300 calories per hour. If you cycle for 30 minutes every day you would burn 11 pounds of fat in a year. Since it helps build muscle, cycling will also boost your metabolic rate long after you’ve finished your ride.

Cycling improves heart health
According to the British Medical Association, cycling just 20 miles a week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%. A major study of 10,000 civil servants suggested that those who cycled 20 miles over the period of a week were half as likely to suffer heart disease as their non-cycling colleagues.

Cycling improves coordination
Cycling is an activity that involves the whole body. Therefore, arm-to-leg, feet-to-hands and body-to-eye coordination are improved.

Improve your sex life
Being more physically active improves your vascular health, which has the knock-on effect of boosting your sex drive, according to health experts in the US. One study from Cornell University also concluded that male athletes have the sexual prowess of men two to five years younger, with physically fit females delaying the menopause by a similar amount of time.

Meanwhile, research carried out at Harvard University found that men aged over 50 who cycle for at least three hours a week have a 30 percent lower risk of impotence than those who do little exercise.

You’re developing a positive addiction
Replace a harmful dependency – such as cigarettes, alcohol or eating too much chocolate or goat head peper soup – with a positive one. The result? You’re a happier, healthier person getting the kind of fix that boosts the good things in life.

Cycling reduces stress
Any regular exercise can reduce stress and depression and improve well being and self esteem. Cycling outdoors is also a good way to be one with nature and to feel the breath of the earth. It takes one’s mind out of everyday-life stress and rejuvenates his soul.

When incorporating cycling into an over-all fitness program, there are many aspects to consider. Here are some important things to remember:

Consult your doctor
Most people can do cycling. However, it is still best to consult your doctor when thinking about incorporating a cycling activity into an overall fitness program. They shall advise you regarding your limits and capacities and what you should avoid doing.

Cycling is a base training activity
Let’s say that the doctor says that there is nothing wrong with you engaging into cycling as a part of your overall fitness program, what do you do next? Remember that cycling should be considered as a base training activity. Base training activities are those, which provide endurance and aerobic training at the same time. Re-align your fitness program such that biking becomes the starting activity for the week. Other activities such as circuit training should be done so as to complement the benefits of cycling.

Start slowly and then increase your cycling
For beginners, they should employ a program wherein cycling is done three times a week. Doing it two times a week is also fine, but this depends on the capabilities of the person undergoing the training.

Increase speeds gradually
Gradual increase in speeds is an important aspect of fitness cycling. Cycling can also be strenuous to the body and the key towards successful fitness cycling is to be patient and not hurry in increasing your limits.

Better safe than sorry
Cycling is great fun but it is important to get the right equipment for the activity. Head gear, kneepads, elbow pads should all be in place when cycling.

Fitness cycling can really be integrated into any fitness program. With every turn of the wheel, calories are burnt, strength is built and wellness is achieved.

@Poster, how is the bike selling business in Nigeria? I was wondering if opening a bike shop somewhere would be cool, and lucrative. what do you think?

There are bike sellers here in Lagos.
But, like always they are not up to standard.
Most of the people working there have no idea of how to take care of customers.
They just want to sell.
Opening a standard well stocked and well equipped one will obviously be very good.
No where to buy bicycle specific lubricants and accessories.

We are in Gbagada.
We want people to actually sign up and then start up in their areas since we do not all live in the same neighbourhood.

We will offer support and announce activities we can all join in.

We are making plans for cycling uniforms.

Hello Guys,
Do you know of any Bike store beside the specialized shop in Ikoyi.

I need a good road bike. All I've seen so far are old model bikes; old geometry, old gears, old shifters.

Aluminum will do but the shifter should be a Shimano speed STI lever(hand selector) or similar.

Any idea on where I can get such?

Yay cheesy
I finally joined. I'm still a learner though and it was difficult and quite scary keeping up with everyone on the somewhat mad lekki expressway.
