Someone used an illustration to explain this to me sometime ago.

He said, "if you go to ask your dad about your school fees do you shout? I guess not. What about you being stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake, how would you call you dad for help? I know it would be with screams.

Personally, I think scriptures asking us to pray quietly and not blabbing and repeating words hoping to be answered are trying to explain to us that if we are to speak loudly when praying, it should not be done just so other people will hear us, to show our prowess or because we think we would be answered faster. Rather it should come from within and we should be careful not to also unnecessarily disturb others.

If you go though the Bible you would see that alot of great prayers were just cries and weeping unto God with little or no words and yet God answered them.
Sometimes the burden may be so heavy that even words may not suffice.

It depends on d situation on ground. There re types of prayers. There is prayer of supplication n warfare. D 2 re nt made in d same manner. Whn u re askin God 4 anythin, u dnt shout. But whn u re castin out devil, u can cry out loud. John 11:43. Whn u re commandin a situation, u dnt say it silently. No military commandanth gives command shylly. None is wrong whether shoutin or silent prayer.

Image123 answered your question perfectly. You can choose to pray quietly but there are instances where you should pray out loud.Even Jesus did(read Image123 references). The word for meditation in d OT is 'hagar' and it means to mutter and to roar.Roaring is not a quiet action.

However,to say u have to shout to be heard by God is a misconception. You however need to do it because it does something to your spirit.U need to understand that prayer does not do so much to God but to u d prayee.I however do not subscribe to making noise or disturbing neighbours. What u need to do is go to a quiet place or a field so u can do your shouting.

Heatblast: If a christian would come with another bible verse on why they should pray out loud, I won't be suprised cause the bible is full of contradictions
I beg to disagree with you, there is no contradiction in the Bible.

Atheist:-D:
Why does anyone need to pray loudly or with emotion? Can the omnipotent God not hear you or know your minds desires?

Screaming and shouting like possessed ppl is just an unfortunate by product of certain branches of xtianity. It is a psychological means to shake ppl up mentally. Once you pray aggressively you feel good about yourself. Nothing to do with the spiritual. Have you seen how ppl speak in tongues too shocked. You would expect half the ppl there to be sectioned instantly under the mental health act.

And why scream and shout commands at God? Some pray with the ferocity as if they would physically assault God if they ever met. That their prayers must be answered by fire by force!!!!!

The current practices in xtianity are breeding a new group of schizophrenics and psychologicaly impaired ppl.
Will you say that about those partying or in viewing center shouting a goal! I am neither advocating silent or loud prayers, I ve seen God answer both, but why we apt to attack spiritual things?

ibukun obi: i am a jehovah's witnesses, over one hundred years ago, we have been liberated from that bondage of noisy prayer pattern, we live quetly and demonds dont come to our place of worships, and we dont cast out demonds that does not exists.
Matt 6 :2-9 is the standard MODEL Prayer pattern for all christians
Any other ideas different from this is expanded because some people want to use that method to confuse the poor just for their own gain (financial gain), you all know someone has to misinterprete the bible just to create new job for himself.
Let us be careful, satan is at work, he knows pple has problems not problem, so he uses prayer warriors that calls themselves modern days christians today to confuse people today in the name of night vigil. Beware of angels of darkness

You say you are a JW, and you don't engage in loud prayers. I wonder if you have read one of the watchtower Society publications 'KNOWLEDGE THAT LEADS TO EVERLASTING LIFE' on page 116 there was this man a JW to be that was being harrassed by demons and the book advised to pray aloud.

Heatblast: Tho I'm not a christian, this was a question that bothered me when I was. When I was little(in a pentecostal church), my sunday school teacher would was always insisting that she must hear us pray out loud(it suposedly made demons scared of us and made god hear our prayers faster)... They would also use this "a shut mouth is a shut destiny" to threaten us.

But to my suprise this verse contradicted their teachings
Mat 6:6: But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Today, you'll see so many xtians screaming and shouting all in the name of personal prayer

Even the so called praying in tounges is a contradiction to this verse
Mat 6:7: But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Today you'll see so many christians shouting:
ba ba ba ba.. Bo bo bo bo... Ray ray ray ray x100

And the last verse to prove my point;
Mat 6:8: Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

you haven't seen anything. Ask the fuckers that preach in public transport in Lagos. They usually start with some Ultrasonic Prayers. Even a sleeping baby would have nightmares!

This loud praying in the night habit made me remember an experience where I was living before moving to my present place.

There were these neighbours of mine (a lady & a guy) lives in the next building to mine, The lady is fond of praying very loudly in the middle of the night while you would hardly hear the voice of the husband in the background. Most neighbours had on occassions shouted from their rooms calling for some quietness to have some sleep after having a hectic working day, this lady did not change.

I even went a step further to write her a letter quoting the bible especially Mathew, so as to educate her more about praying. she prayed queitly for like three days and went back to her loud shouting. (I wrote her a letter because, I dont want her to be embarrassed if I go and knock her door to speak to her face to face).

My people, I was suprised one day when I felt something is unussual, then I remember that for like a week prior to that day, our nights have been quiet with only sounds of generator, so I asked my wife if the lady travelled or was sick or something. She then told me that the lady had a fight with another neighbour in the 3rd house and that one was calling her an Ogbanje and Witch. I didnt get how that had anything to do with her yelling during prayer, then I remembered that she is always shouting, "spirit of Ogbanje leave her alone in Jesus Name" "spirit of witches and Wizard will not come over her in Jesus Name". she has given out all the secrets of her life that is supposed to be between her and God to everybody in the community.

For like a year later, when I left, I used to hear sounds of praying from their room, but no more disturbances, yelling, shouting and tantrums. Where I am living now is even worst, next to a chuch. You can imagine what I am going thru daily with unending night vigils.

Take heart and pray they one day realize that, what they are doing is not biblical.

I dont dere is anytin wrong wit prayin aloud or prayin quitely but most tymz prayin quitely is d best so as not 2 provoke non xtians around coz wen dey r provoked u wont b able 2 gain dere heart 4 God.
But dere r sumtymz wen u pray,u wil av dat intention of prayin quitely but due 2 d deepness of d prayer,u wont kno wen u wil b prayin aloud especially wen u pray 2 d extent of speakin in tongues.
Wat i jux kno abt prayers is dat no mata d prayer b it in a quite or loud mood,D Lord is consigned abt ur heart.

@OP whether loud or solemnly its is your faith and sincerity of heart that makes God deliver.
If you've ever been in a desperate situation where you are so burdened and depressed, believe me the tone of the prayer becomes the least of your worries.
Shouting, jumping and all the acrobatics for me isn't it.

Praying quietly is just the best, why will u be shouting telling God u just have sex with ur friends girl friend in the church and human beings are listening to u? They will pass jughement on you even bfore u finish shouting. God knows ur problem talk to him quietly, why will u shout to ur father to give u money? He will not answer u.

Its good to pray aloud so that you don't lose concentration.

When you pray quietly, you may fall asleep or find yourself thinking about some mundane issues.

Some posters on this thread are hell-bound!
What a pity!!
