Wow, really a sad story. I think what most of us should be doing is asking God to forgive him and accept his soul, not judging him (even if we know suicide aint the way to go).

I believe our God is merciful and understanding, but obviously still a God of justice. Let God decide where he will go, not us.

For those that are a bit insensitive to the situation, can't you see that it is an easy trap to fall into when you are as depressed as he probably was?. There are many un-repenting malefactors who maybe might deserve a bit more criticism due to their hardened hearts, but I am guessing this boy just truly felt lost.

On the Nigerian front, this country really needs to give its citizens here and abroad hope. Hope really is a powerful thing, hope of a better future for the country, for our family, our kids, hope of finding a good Job,... Instead our country leaders never see the trickle down effect of their nefarious activities and how it stifles the hope of anything good for Nigeria.

Kslib: He is a fool for taking his life.. Why do people like exaggerating stuffs.. Yes,the Nigerian situation is bad,but not bad to the extent of someone taking his life than to be deported back.. Abi no be the Nigeria wey me dey?
People keep saying
boko haram: Boko haram are only in the north and i still have friends in the north who move freely.. How many times does boko haram attack in a month.. I'm in no way justifying the deadly sect, but people keep shouting and making yeye noise as if boko haram attacks 5times in a day...
Kidnappings: yes, there is kidnapping in the east and some south south states, but how many have we witnessed or do witness in lets say "6 months".. I know its bad,but yiu guys make it look as if kidnapping has now become the order of the day..
Well,i guess people like to hype everything.. The Nigerian situation is somewhat bad,but it has not even smelled the stage of comparing it with hell or death.. That guy was already tired of life, and was just looking for an opportuinity to die,so he was presented with one... He said he had no one back home which simply means if he had someone back home he wouldn't have killed himself..
The guys sha,i doubt if he head Nigerian blood in him cos Nigerians are natural survivors, they fight situations no matter how hard it looks,we dont easily give up and I AM PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN

Riliwanu's "aunt" and, by implication, his extended Nigerian community failed him here. Simple.

May your ghost return to haunt all those who let you down angry

HE WAS rejected by the state that raised him. Orphan Riliwanu Balogan was dumped on the doorstep of Southwark Council social services in 1998 by a “dubiously-named” aunt who disappeared into the ether leaving him a cultural nomad with no roots.

At the tender of age of eight, he became a ward of the state, left at the mercy of social workers, carers and solicitors who decided his every move until his tragic death.

@babay mama and Cigar icon!!! Who told you both that i didn't read the story?? I repeat,he's a fool for committing sucide because he doesn't know what lies in the spiritual realm.. Yes,he wanted to rest in peace, but what if he's been sent back to this world as a new born to re-live this same life??
What if he there is no so-called peace he was looking for in death??.. All i'm just trying to say is what if in death,he realised his mistakes. I'm just trying to be logical here..
There are people out there who have faced far more worse than him,but still did not commit sucide.. There are people who have everything, but still do commit sucide..
Me personally,i dont lack anything but still i have thought of committing sucide because i dont like the way the world is and what is happening around, the way some people behave, the way humans are becoming too evil and all those stuff BUT i will never commit sucide cos i dont know what awaits me in the spiritual realm(what if there is a life after death, what if death is not how we humans think it to be..WHAT IF JUST WHAT IF??) and most importantly, SUCIDE IS AN EXCAPE ROUTE USED BY THE WEAK TO AVOID FACING THE CHALLENGES OF LIFE.....

Riliwanu had become estranged from Nigeria through no fault of his own. Is this simple fact difficult to comprehend?

I am trying to be polite when I ask: where is the "home" you designate for a 21-year old cast adrift by his kindred since the tender age of 8? angry

He is Not going to hell,he is dead and at peace. While you remain in turmoil in the living hell that he avoided.

Your's is a very sad comment. You should be on suicide watch too. How the Bleep would you prefer dying than to go back to Nigeria. You are probabaly one of those paupers from the slum who sold all they had to move to UK. Are you aware that a white American once fought tooth and nail to remain in Nigeria after he was deported.
There are over 150m people still living and are happy to be in Nigeria. Anybody that kills himself instead of returning to Nigeria is a hopeless nut case. As for this Balogun guy, he would would killed himself anyway even if he was to remain in the UK. It's not just about the deportation.

he was only in detention awaiting deportation, he is not yet deported, beleive me there was no way he would have been deported, i guess he panicked..i know alot of nigerians who were in detention waiting for deportation but were never deported, especially minors like him even with criminal records were still never deported.in his case its so unfortunate,he panicked coupled with history of self harming he just needed some body to tell him that..its ok

Examples are

The Fashanu brothers
Victoria ositeku that organized a hit last year
The musician named Seal
A host of Gang bangers and future killers born by Nigerian parents all over the ghettos of UK

The same reason why this young man killed himself

Cynicism that has no clear basis is wrong and, coming from you, this is a big disappointment.

I would be interested in how you explain a 22 year old (7+15) passing himself off as a child no more than seven, when he encountered social services in 1998. Do bear in mind we are talking about someone with dyslexia also.

He had lived in Britain for nearly 13 years, but after falling foul of the law, the Home Office started to plan his deportation. They could not have picked an easier target: he had no family or friends to fight his corner on medical grounds and dyslexic Riliwanu lacked the confidence to speak up for himself...

His is an all-too familiar tale of someone who was failed by the very institutions that were supposed to protect him. He was not without flaws, far from it – Rilly, as he was known to his friends, had a troubled past as a minor that helped fuel the Home Office’s case against him.

His life was a reflection of the shocking figures that reveal children in care are twice as likely to turn to crime and represent nearly half of those in youth offending institutions.

The Home Office has refused to comment on the reasons for Rilly’s deportation, but an adult conviction for ABH in 2010 may have sealed his fate.

DISASTER
One must wonder how it came to such a decision considering Rilly’s background. Rilly had not been raised in a stable home with loving parents. Instead he had been bounced between children’s homes across the country.

He was once placed in a home in Newcastle, in the north east of England, which a friend claimed was a “cultural disaster” for him.

As an adult, Southwark’s social services team found housing for him in Grove Park, which neighbours Eltham in south London, where Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist attack in 1993.

Before the Home Office decided this young man was so unfit to remain a British citizen, they should have pointed the finger firmly back at the Government agencies who were essentially his parents. Had they made the right choices by him?

“Someone needs to be held responsible for what happened to him”, said Reverend Joy Barnard whose family had grown close to Rilly when he moved to their area. Her son, Harry, became his closest friend.

The Barnard family’s heart had gone out to the naïve young man after spotting Rilly wandering aimlessly unable to find his way home in a his new neighbourhood. He had no money in his pocket, no credit on his phone, and so the family spent hours helping him find his flat.

It is Harry who has taken on the role of his next of kin. Who else could have filled the devastatingly empty role?
Rev Barnard said: “My son is in bits. He said he didn’t see the point in fighting for answers, because nothing will bring Rilly back.

“But I said if this brings to light that the Prison Service is not doing its job properly and if it forces them to review their policies or how they treat people in detention centres, it could save some other young lad’s life.

“To do nothing, would have meant his life was wasted, that he lived in vain.”

A lot can be said for timing. The day before Rilly’s birthday, Harry had been denied a visitor’s pass to see him although he alleged he gave the required 24 hours notice.

“Were they punishing Rilly for something?” asked Rev Barnard. “Perhaps if Harry had been there, he might not have done what he went on to do.”

She added: “Rilly never wanted to talk about anything from his past. He mentioned his mum a few times and he was very eaten up about her death.

“He spoke only about his future and want he wanted to achieve. He loved his music and played the guitar beautifully. He was a talented kid. It’s such a waste.

You will be surprised. Go and see that programme on TV called UK Border Agency or something like that. In one of the episode, a Nigerian who is probably in his 30s was ask his age and he said 15. Those asking him don't know whether to kill themselves with laughter or something else. I was in stitches.
Many Nigerians had come to my clinic when I was with the NHS claiming so ridiculous age, I kept asking them to tell me their real age, its for their own interest to get a better diagnosis and treatment.
