Asalam Alaykum.

Islam is a religion not just to he Arabs but to the whole world,Simply by saying 'there is no god apart from God.

God bears witness that there is no other god besides Him, and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge."(Verse 3:18)

there is a trend among Muslims which i find not just disturbing but wrong.muslims are submitters to the will of Allah not to the will of Arabs.
we are loosing our identity to the Arabs.the essence of naming is for Identity.when i hear the name Chidi,i know he is Igbo by tribe.but it would be difficult to tell whether Gafar that resides in Oshodi is yoruba, igbo, hausa or Arab.
i fear we are loosing our cultural heritage to the Arabs.i beg to differ there is no such thing as Islamic name.i am not saying Arabic names are bad,but we ought not loose our identity.
i grew up with an Arabic name as my first name, whenever i say my first name, people start asking are you Hausa?it will take me me some seconds to introduce my self.i have since adopted my tribal name as my first, arabic second.
i am proud of my race,i am proud to be called Yoruba.i am not loosing it,not for anything.

OP, I am guessing your surname is also 'seen' as "Arabic" such as 'Lawal', 'Thanni' and the likes.

I think you are just an insecure individual. I use virtually all my names. Even some people call me other names that are not mine.

I have this neighbour that calls me 'Biodun', that is not my name. For some reason she cannot remember any of my names whether it is Arabic, Yoruba or Chinese. I just respond and laugh within myself anytime she does so.

her case is different, she might be calling you such as an alias.but when you tell them yourself that your name is Thani,Gafar, then you are loosing it.
you should be proud of ur race as arabs are so proud of themselves.

I am getting your position now but you are getting it wrong by stating that using Muslim first names is losing your identity to Arabs. That would be correct if names as 'mac bin tunji' were pervasive amongst Yoruba people. Islam is a total concept and nothing identifies you as a Muslim more than your first name.

You see Muslims calling themselves Abubakar after Abu Bakr, have you seen any Muslim named Abu Jahl or Abu Lahab?

I still say you are insecure. Yes, use your traditional names but this your theory screams out that you are personally insecure about your religion.

I guess by your logic, Herbert Macaulay and Henry Carr stopped being Yoruba men because of their English names.

you are wrong.my actions and deeds should identify me as a muslim rather than my name.using arabic name as first name is loosing my identity.arabic name has no significance in me being a better muslim.

what makes you think i am insecure about my religion?i am not a default kinda muslim.the Quran clearly defines who a muslim is,a muslim is not one who bears arabic names.

at first they have lost their identity.ask any one that have not read or know them.first they will assume they are not africans.they have lost their identity.officially they stopped being yoruba.

I am not saying they don't or won't (actions and deeds) but it is also an undeniable fact that Arabic is the formal language used in Islam. This does not make all Muslims Arabs neither does it make all Arabs Muslims. It is possible to be Hassan al-Arabiyy and not be Muslim. However, it would be odd to be Cassius Clay as a Muslim without having any Muslim name in the mix. The question anybody would ask (even Non-Muslims) is: Are you not proud to be a Muslim? [/quote]

This is funny. We have what we call 99 Names of Allah. Truthfully, as a Muslim, do these names have any value to you? If they do, how do they compare to Olohun or Eledumare in Yoruba?

I could reverse the point made in this your very shallow submission and say:

Without a Muslim name or "Arab Name" as you choose to call it, You have officially "stopped being" Muslim.

I would like to see you prove that your submission is correct and mine that follows the same logic is incorrect.

@bolded thats the dogma that should be erased. why would it be odd to an arab that Hassan Al-Arabiyy is a non-muslim?would it be odd to you that bamidele bukola is a muslim?(considering the fact that you are yoruba)

the name you bear is insignificant. this is what makes you a muslim

not your name

It is not a dogma, it is a legitimate question. Bamidele Bukola could be a Muslim, but the I wouldn't know until I ask him or see him practise Islam. However, if I see Idris Bamidele Bukola, I know at the very least, he has a Muslim background.

justaqad:

When someone starts answering questions solely with questions, I know it is time to let them remain where they are, they simply have little or no intention to change.

I wonder if any self-respecting Muslim will bear the name "Esubiyi" which is very Yoruba name. Would you give your child that name going by your argument that "the name you bear is insignificant"? #Kai See #Argument.

This is a very interesting thread. grin

There are many like that, which makes it all the more important for Muslims not to discard their Arabic names. Even with such people, you can tell that they have Muslim backgrounds which can be significant when certain issues are in contention.

we are loosing it
if you are in the new york and introduce yourself as Abdul Gafar, they will all think you are arab.
it would be nicer if arabic names are used as second names.
that's my point. tribal names first.

middle easterners generally have names that are specific to region, outside of the commonly known ones.

i think its immigrants or otherwise new converts who mainly have easily recognisable arab names.

yoruba muslim/arab names used to be spelt and pronounced with a yoruba format, but it seems thats not the case anymore, we now have yoruba muslims with conc arab names.

I don't want to agree wit u on d bases that if u bear Abubakar u are seen as an arab, If u say a muslim I agree. No doubt d name may have an arab origin nevertheless, Arabic is the language of d Quran n d messenger, so if u bear an arabic name ur simply identifying as a muslim n not an arab. Its not a coincidence/mistake that d quran is in d arabic language but of Allah's desires. This is how u as a muslim shld see it rather than saying ur losing ur identity by ur name sounding arabic in nature while ur not an arab. Ur identity as a muslim shld be more important/shld superceed any identity. God creater us all into various tribes n nation but stil choose Arabic language for His religion... don't u think if He desire He could have made us into one nation/tribe? Its a blessing to the arabs for Allah to esteem Arabic language by making it d Quran language, so don't hold it against them.. If the quran language hadn't been arabic n yet d quran came from the arabs then, I wil have a problem if u bear an arab name(abubakar) else I dnt see y u shld stress ur nerves..

Justaqad, are you seeing your muslim brethren? A blessing to be Arab?

Justaqad, you are not seeing the whole problem, only a part. The problem is that some muslims already take Arab language/culture to be divine and better than their own due to islam. Which is very wrong.

And Tbaba wants me to believe in this religion. A religion that I would have to accept that God chose to reveal the truth in Arabic while my ancestors who have a history older than the Arabs were not only ignored when this truth was being revealed to the Arab man but also enslaved a century after by the same Arabs.

My stance is simple; all men are equal and we should equally repsect other peoples culture. We shouldnt disrepect ur culture in place of a foreign one.The truth should have been revealed to all not to one group in one language.

Masalam

it is true that Nigerian Muslims have come to confuse arabic names for Islamic names.for instance you find a Nigerian Muslim bearing a name that even an arab christian would bear, and the former thinks that is evidence of his Muslim faith.that is not right.

however there is nothing wrong to have arabic names that are of significance to the Islamic faith.for instance it is honorable and good to name our children after the prophets or the Ahlul-bayt (as).our children can bear names like Muhammad,Ibrahim,Ali,Isa,Hassan,Hussein,Musa, and Dawood.
