The stadium has been in Kano since 1999.

This can't be true.
unless his family is building and naming it.

Are you surprised? If not that God killed Him he'd still be in power today, ably supported by the cattle rearers up north.

Now I am scared. Why would Kano state decide to have a stadium named after this man?? Is he from that state?? Did he do them so much good?? I mean what exactly is the reason for this??

He's supposed to be a resident of Kano. His family home is there and he is also buried there.

Oh ga oo, after all that man did to people, I expected that his people would deny him but I guess since osama is welcomed as a hero in his own hometown, I should not be surprised. Yet another reason for me to avoid kano state as long as I can then.

I agree that those people up North, Kano in particular are cluless BUT in my own opinion IBB is far more dangerous and damaging than Abacha.

Abacha is a big fool and buffoon whereas IBB is very intelligent and an evil genius. He wholesale to the Nigerian people 419, and he is a fraud master.  He allows and encourage every evils that Nigerians may like to perpertrate.

A good hero like IDIAGBON has nothing named after his name. That is Nigeria for you we get what we deserve.

In my opinion, I would say Abacha was by far the worst. I mean babangida was a theif and everyone knows that but abacha was a thief and far worse a tyrant. Babangida was responsible for some deaths but Abacha ruled with an ion hand, a theiving hand and instilled fear in the minds of more people in the history of that nation. I remember I was on campus back then and even students were afraid to utter a word against the man, afraid that someone might be listening. We heard stories of people who were taken away and yet to return. It was like watching Nigeria become more like uganda back under Idi Amin. I will never forget the celebration on campus the day he died. People shouted victory and cried praises to God.

Your post leave little to be desired.I have followed your comments on issues in the past even though I don't agree with most of them I do acknowledge you have a good way of driving home our conviction.

The stadium in question is in Kano. Yes Northern Nigeria. With the amount of money spent to Host Nigeria 99 especially to renovate stadia I want to believe that it is a Federal Govt Property. So if the govt stick to that I guess it is still the Govt that want his name some where.

Even if the stadium belongs to the state government then it should be the Kano indigenes that should be asked to justify that(But before we get there we do have to ask reason others in other part of Nigeria have one thing or the other named after them. The History of Nigeria can not be complete without Abacha. He is no HERO but if villians are to be classified in Nigeria he will not rank No.1. His only crime is that HE IS DEAD. And the dead do not talk.

So what do you hope to achieve by making the north the curlpit. In Port Harcourt Abacha has a street named after him in GRA-In a choice are with a very good road, So do you now call southerners degoratory names. If only many of us that see ourselves as enlighten do focus on that we share in common rather than that which makes us different.

For what ever his crimes are I believe that he is not the worst we had seen and definitely not anywhere near our very best of Leaders

Considering the history of projects in that country and the way things have happened since Abacha's death to present day, I would say I disagree with your suggested view that this project could be federal government property. Considering that I know of no place that i am told that it is, Nothing stops the state itself from wanting to put up a monument for the man using resources that was supplied it by the federal government. That does not defacto mean it belongs to the federal government.

Sure the History of Nigeria can not be complete without mentioning the part ABACHA played, is not enough reason for a stadium named after him using NIgeria's money since I can assure you that majority of nigerias would vote down such a project. Him being one of the people who made Nigeria the way it is today does not warrant the need for a stadium in his name, in any state. I mean you do not see an ANINI BRIGDE anywhere in the country today, or is there one, so that I can shut up now LMAO!!

I happen to believe Abacha was by far the worst we have seen and we hope we never see such like him ever again in the history of this nation. I understand your attack of her opinion of the north but I happen to share equal disgust in this case myself. This is like the @poster noted, disgusting, sort of like the germans or some people in germany deciding to put up a monument for Hitler. It does not make sense and I don't care how many spineless people have played there, fact remains it is wrong and dispicable.

Re: Sani Abacha Stadium: A Eulogy To Evil? by debosky(m): 4:45am On Mar 16, 2008
why the brouhaha over the stadium?

Abacha was not hated by most Kano state indigenes, they benefited a lot from his government as much of the North did in the PTF days of road construction and hospital refurbishment and drug supplies. Abacha was no saint, but he was quite good to sections of the nation, so in their view it does not constitute anything wrong to name a stadium after him.

The follwing is a partial list of public buildings that could appropriately be named after the late and unlamented former Nigerian military tyrant Sanni (Off-with-his-head) Abacha.

1. Public Toilets may be re-designated as "Abacha Family Welfare Donation Receptacles"

2. Municipal waste incineration furnaces could be re-named "Abacha Infernos"

3. The execution chambers within various Nigerian jails would be re-named " The Abacha Room"

4. The red-light districts of all Nigerian towns could be called  "The Abacha Quarters "

5. Mortuaries could be euphemistically referred to as "Miriam Abacha Beauty Salons"

6. The crime of 419 Internet fraud could be assigned the code name " Abacha Impersonation"

Re: Sani Abacha Stadium: A Eulogy To Evil? by Danmasani(m): 6:12pm On Mar 16, 2008
Sanni Abacha, now dead for 8 years was no doubt a dictator and tyrant. But how about Olusegun Obasanjo, IBB? Are those not dictators or tyrants too? Or is it because they still breathe and call the shots in Nigeria today! Abacha persecuted his enemies vigorously, so did Olusegun Obasanjo. Abacha used state machinery to intimidate his opponents, So did Obasanjo with EFCC, ICPC and all agencies out there. Abacha stole and mismanaged billion of naira and cornered billions for himself. IBB today has still not yet cleared the air on the missing $15 billion oil windfall of the Gulf war nor has he attested to the billions mismanaged during his government. How about Obasanjo? $3 billion were said to be sank into roads, $4billion or $5billion ( or how much is it as they seem to come with numbers from all angles) on power, $?? on refineries Turn- over maintenance?? How about billions mismanaged during COJA and CHOGM and the fallout of the Obasanjo's family handling the contracts and making money for themselves? Is there any difference today between how Mohammed Abacha and Gbenga Obasanjo in benefiting from govt largesse? Is there any between Stella Obasanjo and Miriam Abacha whose 'pet projects' were non-other than means to further plunge deeper into the pockets of the Nigerian state and extract as much as they can?

The moment we start calling a pot for what it is- black, the moment we be better. Obasanjo's era plunged Nigeria further in abyss, so did Abacha's and Babangida's. OBJ has EFCC, Abacha had Failed Bank Tribunals for their enemies. Yet Pentascope exist and has bought properties from Nigeria at discounted prices, Ota Farms is at its height after years in the doldrum and no one is questoning anyting!

My two cents is this! If there is a Olusegun Obasanjo road/highway/airport/center/stadium/ whatever, so also should there be an IBB way/center/road as there is a Sani Abacha way/stadium/airport or whatever. All three failed as leaders of the Nigerian state. Any double standards meted on Abacha while ignoring the horrors of IBB or Obasanjo is unfair and biased!

@doyin13,
Thank you. Leave me and my sense of estimation alone. You're probably one of those OBJ sycophants.

OBJ was worse than Abacha. OBJ was morally bankrupt, arrogant and very ignorant. The West particularly disliked Abacha because they were sure he wasn't interested in seeking their approval, hence they used their tools (CNN, etc) to demonize him.

OBJ killed more innocent people (by his stupid policies) than Abacha ever dreamed of. Imagine a president ordering for the complete obliteration of a whole community - Odi. In terms of high-profile assassinations, the attorney-general of the federation was murdered in cold-blood under highly suspicious circumstances. Many point to OBJ and his henchmen. OBJ's ineptitude ensured that more people died from inter-tribal and inter-religious conflicts than in Abacha's tenure, even when adjusted to take into consideration the Abacha:OBJ 5:8 years-in-office ratio). Abacha increased price of fuel at the pump once and set up PTF to manage the extra funds from the exercise. PTF did some work - built roads, etc. OBJ increased fuel pump price many times with nothing to show. While Abach was in power, OBJ criticized Abacha for not fixing our refineries and accused him of deliberately ignoring the refineries because his (Abacha's) cronies were making money by importing refined petroleum. When he came into power, he shared with his fellow kleptomaniacs spent billions of dollars on the refineries with nothing to show for it. He shared with his fellow goons spent billions of dollars on power (NEPA -> PHCN) with absolutely nothing to show for it. OBJ was and still is a highly vindictive animal who allowed personal vendetta to get in the way of doing his job.

Overall score:
Buhari/Idiagbon: 85%
Abacha: 35%
OBJ: 25%
