nairaman66: Sometimes it does.. Most times it has failed. I am using GOODLUCK as a case in point!

Can I just say; even though you consider him as 'Badluck', he has done pretty well for HIMSELF, personally.

He was made the president, first time around without a general election, he can do whatever he wants etc. He is generally, 'lucky' to still be president, so that name is working for him, dude (even though it's killing a nation).

there is an unseen name on the forehead of every human on earth,be he wester or African.Some are glorious,while others are blasphemous.Physical change of name is a symbol/sign that u want a change if urs is to the negative.It impacts destiny greatly.u person u termed success may have been a faileure destiny wise.

Donmichaelz: As we all know, most parents in African countries especially Nigeria give children names with deep spiritual meanings e.g Oluwaseun, Chukwuemeka, Olusegun, Godswill, ThankGod etc cos they believe these names will impact positively or negatively on the child's life.

In Nigeria, people have taken it to the extent of even dropping or changing their names cos they have negative connotations and meanings

In the Western World, Parents give their kids names like Blue Ivy, Chair, Purple, Trouser, etc in short any thing that catches their fancy can be given as a name to their kids yet these people still end up being successful in life....

This raises the question. . .do names have an effect on a child's life?

Do you think really think name's meaning matter? Lets hear your views. . . .


I don't think so. The richest black man on earth and the 43rd richest man of earth does not have that kind of sweet name. Infact, his name is Dangote and Dangote means son of pottage. Two Bushes have ruled the United States. I don't believe in the crap people talk about!

baba dey: Some do change their names cos of some reasons like - ancestral curse,sickness,the name implying something bad or jast to start afresh (like upgrading ur BB bold2 os to a bold4 os but still with the bold2) hope you get the drift there. Like my name(surname) now means something not to goood but will change it when chanced.
And after upgrading your bold2 to bold4 the phone begin to experience frequent freezing and buffering,what will you do?

I don't believe a name can have and effect on someone's life, granted you might not like the name they chose for you but your life is your own and you make it or break it. My name, personally I like it because there are not that many with it although it is slightly annoying that people cant seem to spell it when it really is simple but it's not going to impact my life in a major way.
People who says that are in my opinion re superstitious..The names are generally given by our parents,so it denotes their taste,it doesn't relates much to us.

So, are some folks telling me that if i name my child aids, that means d child will have aids?! It is just ridiculous having superstitious idea... We should all seek enlightenment & desist 4rm such ridiculous beliefs.

Names have effect IF YOU WANT THEM. Jabez (meaning pain)never changed his name but when he prayed God enlarged his territory.

However don't name your child SATAN or any terrible name, the society frowns at it and it could make you a target spiritually. On the other hand don't name yourself CENTRAL BANK and hope to be rich. You got to work it out.

Names are really the meanings you give to them or the meanings people give to them. Eg. in Nigeria a name like Akuma is used by a few, in Japan it means Satan and the Government bans it. If the Nigerian Akuma goes to Japan he will be in serious trouble lol

Sometimes it does, but there are also other factors that affect a person's life too.
The name "Jabez" affected him. Nabal, means fool and it affected the bearer.
Its best to bear a good name.

Thank you. I was about using Jabez as an example. Please check 1 chronicles 4:10. You'll understand that names do have effect on one's life although everything all bores down to the spiritual understanding of everybody. If you think, it does not affect anything then you are free to call your child badluck, thief, scammer, liar etc and be ready to face the consequence. One thing we need to understand again is that our mouth is very powerful and we should use it to profess something positive from time to time.
