The next day, I returned to the polytechnic to open the file as directed by the coordinator.

He signed my acceptance letter and introduced me to the secretary to open a file for me. The secretary gave me some forms to fill while he attended to some students who had one problem or the other.

I left the polytechnic feeling disappointed at my choice of ppa. This was not what I expected. Ms Enoh had painted a great picture of the polytechnic for me and I dived without having a second thought. I went outside the school gate and looked around. There were many private hostels offering off camp accommodation to mostly students. I ventured further and saw all kind of houses. Some were erected by the locals; occupying some of the rooms and renting some out to students.

I was already exhausted, so I planned on coming the next day to look for accommodation.

“otondo!” someone called as I was about to head to the road to board a taxi to the corper’s lodge. Otondo was a slang used in referring to a fresh corp member that just left camp. It was more like a military lexicon used at military camp to indicate fresh recruit, probably someone that still doesn’t know the norms of his new environment.
I turned round and saw an unfamiliar face smiling at me. He looked young with his blue jean and white polo. My first guess was that he was a corper.

I was right.

He introduced himself as Mike, an ex-corper that just passed out before we our batch entered camp. I introduced myself and informed him I was posted to the cec unit. The look on his face showed excitement as he screamed in what I could term as an excited voice.

“congrats bros?” he exclaimed. “You don hammer!”

I didn’t understand what he meant so I asked for clarification. He informed me that the cec and pre-nd units where the best and easiest places to make quick money. When I informed me of the money the guy was offering to pay me, he waved it aside.

“forget that chicken change!” he told me. “cec students are big boys and girls, that is where you make your money; from organising test every week, to being strict on attendance, to selling lecture material! Before the end of the semester, you will be smiling to your bank.” He said, smiling at me like I was the bank.
I needed to learn more about what mike was saying, so I followed him to his room.

Mike explained to me that he served at the poly also, but was unfortunate to be posted as an admin staff working at one of the departments. But he insisted that the best places to serve were the part-time program, pre-nd program and at the exams and records unit. It was mike that opened my eyes to the realities of the polytechnic and the possible ways of milking money from the students.

We were interrupted when a girl walked into the room. Mike introduced her as his girl friend, who happened to be a student of the polytechnic.

“what are you still doing in idah since you’ve passed out?” I asked mike, after wondering why he was still hanging around the school vicinity.

“wetin I dey go find for house?” he replied and his girl friend chuckled.
“there is no work in this country, so I have to hang around here and see if anything comes up.” He said.
Mike explained that he has enrolled to do his masters program at the kogi state university, and he was keen to hang around the school to see if employment opportunity could open up and he could fix himself.

The girl friend walked into the kitchen to prepare food, as she had been picking beans ever since she entered the room. It was a cool self contained room in a nice hostel occupied by students. I asked how much the rent of the room was and he informed me. It was quite on the high side, but he insisted it was ok, that any cheaper room around will have one problem or another; if not light, then its water, or security, or small room space and lots more.

“are there empty rooms available?” I asked him. If he said the room was ok for the price, then there was no need looking around for house.

“none for now. But some occupants will move anytime from now.”
I exchanged contact with mike and left. If what he told me was true, then my service year was back to the promising year of sex and comfort it was planned to be.

I got back to the corpers lodge that afternoon and chifawu was waiting for me as usual. She asked how my day went and I informed her. We entered the clo’s room once more to talk.

“I’m travelling this weekend.” She informed me. “I will return before the school reopens.” I nodded, she had been postponing her travell because of me. Its only fair that I let her go.

“I want us to have that HIV test before I travel.” She told me.

It was a good idea. We could walk up to any lab centre and have a hiv test. I’ve not gone for one before, but I heard it doesn’t take time.
We agreed to do the test the next morning so she could travel after it.

The next morning, we went to the lab at the city centre. the attendant asked us to wait for the lab scientist and we sat and waited. The receptionist chew gum loudly as she entered some data on a book at her desk. I wondered what serious organization would have its lab scientist absent from work close to mid-day.

Later on, the male scientist came and apologized for his absence. He went straight to the lab and beckoned on us to follow suit. He took blood samples from both of us and labeled the samples as he carefully placed them inside a glass shelve. He handed us forms which we filled. He asked us to return in three days time for the result.

“three days?” I enquired. “I thought it would be ready within 24 hours?” I had envisaged the possibility of collecting the result the next day, and use it as a valid claim for my trophy – Chifawu’s fine and warm c’u’nt before she travels.

“we have to move the samples to our headquarters inside town.” He interrupted my unholy thought. “we don’t have the facility to run the test right here.” He concluded.

We left the lab and returned to the lodge.
“I can’t wait for that result.” Chifawu informed me. “I will travel tomorrow, when I return, we can collect the result together.”
It was a nice idea, I just had to wait for a few weeks, I thought to myself.

I hope it was worth the wait.

The HIV result was going to be my password for the ultimate price.

So I thought.

That result was a disaster that shattered her world, MY WORLD!

Following with keen interest

I'm finally here where I can comment. Been reading all posts and chit-chats with keen interest. But then I want to be noticed too. *Begins OPERATION NOTICE ME*

The wait for Chifawu was longer than I anticipated. She called that she could not return to idah right away as she was still at her place at Auchi in Edo state. She said some new developments had caused her to extend her stay beyond what she planned.

“I’m really missing you here!” I exclaimed.

I wasn’t exaggerating, I was really missing her. I grew more attached to her and I never paid attention to any other female folk around.

I had started work at the cec centre in idah poly. They were mid-way to the end of the semester and I was helping out with Mat 112. It had to do with primary differential equations for students of physical and biological sciences. Dr Ani had informed me that the lecturer that was to handle it was on sick leave, so the students were really lagging behind in the course. That was why he was excited that I was posted to the school.

The course content was large and the lecturer had barely scratched the surface before I started. I had to fix 4 hrs of lectures per week, 2hrs on Friday afternoon and 2 hrs on Saturdays to cover up for the lost time. Worse still, the population offering the course was too big. Finding a suitable lecture venue was a big challenge. Within two weeks and four lecture days and an accumulated 8 hours, we had gone far and covered more grounds, so I took the initiative and split the lecture days; Friday afternoon for students in physical sciences, Saturday morning for students in Biological sciences.

In one of such Friday afternoons, after 2 straight hours of lectures, Mike called me to inform me that a student just moved from a room at the hostel.
I rushed down immediately and he took me to the caretaker who showed us the room. We both inspected the room as the caretaker opened it. The room was same size as mike’s, but the old occupant was a pig as shown in the walls, bathroom sink, toilet seater, ceilings and tiles. The room was in a dire situation. It needed a complete overhaul!

I agreed to take the room. The caretaker gave me the account info of the landlord to make payments, afterwhich I was expected to give him some cash for agreement fee, agency fee and lawyer fee; all of which belongs to him. He was apparently the lawyer and the agent.

My major challenge was raising the said fee for the room. The fee was almost the sum of all the allowance the polytechnic was going to pay me for the service year.

“isn’t it ironical that I’m going to use a total of all the money the school will pay me for the year to pay for house rent?” I asked mike, who, in return, smiled at me.

“open your eyes brother, use your talent and make some money; no slacking!” he reiterated.

Having made the payment that same day, I returned to the caretaker with the bank teller and he wrote a receipt for me. He demanded for the agency and agreement fees but I asked him to give me some time. Evidently, I needed more money to put the room in place, and then start talking of properties! I had used my last cash to pay for the room.

I needed money, and I needed it fast.

There was only one sure to get the money: Ms Enoh.

I called Ms Enoh.

We had a long talk and I briefed her on the situation on ground. I asked her to get me some cash and I would pay back when I settle down. She paused for some time over the phone like she was thinking it through.

“I still have the platoon money.” She informed me. “although it rightfully belongs to me, but I can spare you some.” She concluded.

I remembered the prize money of a hundred thousand naira the deputy governor had promised us on the last day of camp. She must have managed to acquire the money.

“you have to come to Lokoja to get it.” She added after a brief pause.

I didn’t border asking why I was going to embark on such journey since she could easily pay the money through my account. Who asks what a woman wants? I had asked for some soft loan and she wanted me to come to her place. Then why not? We fixed the date for my coming.

Few days to the date, Sonia called me. This was the first time she was calling me after we left camp. We talked for some minutes. I had this weird impression there was something she wanted to tell me but was being hesitant. I informed her I was coming to Lokoja in a few days time and she got excited. She said we must see before I go back. She gave me the directions of etisalat office at Lokoja.

“don’t fail to come.” She said and I wondered what was so urgent she wanted to tell me.

I headed to the etisalat office when I arrived at Lokoja. I called Sonia from outside and she came out to meet me. She had removed the bleached hair colour and was wearing her normal hair colour. No excess ear rings and heavy make up. She looked and dressed cooperate, more decent and I had to commend her new look. She took me to a nearby eatery where we stayed to talk.

Seems a lot had changed with her. She looked sober, composed and calm like she was trying to count the number of words that left her mouth.

After reminiscing on old times and catching up with recent events, I asked why she looked and acted so sober, and what it was she wanted us to see about.
She breathed a heavy sigh of relieve, looked at me for some minutes like she was trying to re-consider, then she spoke.

“I’m ending my marriage.” She said.

“you’re getting divorced?” I asked.

“no, we never had a white wedding, so there is no need for a divorce. My people will just perform some traditional rites and return the drink they put on my head, with other necessary things.”

“why?” I asked, rather stupidly. I knew the reason, or I could guess.

“I cant continue a marriage with a stranger, someone I have not met, and who isn’t keen on meeting me.”

She went further to explain how all her efforts to travel and meet the so called husband had proved abortive. The last straw was when she discovered the ‘husband’ wasn’t even supplying the embassy with the needed papers to enhance the preparation of her visa. Like he was actually trying to frustrate her efforts, so she read the hand writing on the wall and decided to end it all.

I felt for her. It was better late than never. She was still young, very young and could easily find her way to the right man’s arms one of these days.

“there is another reason why I called you here.” She announced calmly and I faced her to get the full gist.

She looked into my eyes, held my hands as she dropped the mother of all shocker;

“I’m pregnant.”

“. . .and its for you. . .”
