So many of edo natives can't speak their dialect but rather speak Yoruba at d expense of their dialect, coupled with d fact that parents don't even bother to teach their dialects to their children

I noticed this too. Many of the Edo people don't have an idea of their native tongues no more and would rather speak Pidgin English, the language they were brought up with, especially those who grew up in Edo state. Then those who grew up in regions outside their state tend to speak the dominant language of that region. Take for example, I have a class mate of mine in secondary school who is Edo/Esan but does not speak. He grew up in owerri and speaks Igbo fluently. He even spoke the language better than I did then. During Igbo classes he'd participate fully. He even made an A1 in Igbo in WAEC. Sam Loco Efe is an example of another Edo who spoke Igbo so fluently. He grew up in Enugu where he learnt to speak Igbo so well. He starred in the Nneka the Pretty Serpent movie as far back as 1992 where he played the role of Ifeoma's father. He was even blowing Igbo adages and proverbs.

Then those that grew up in Lagos will tend to speak Yoruba. Not just them, even people from other tribes who grew up in Lagos will tend to understand or speak Yoruba.

When I was in NYSC camp, I had two Edo neighbours by my side. They never spoke Edo for one day but rather used Pidgin to communicate. While you'd loudly hear Igbo and Yoruba in the hostel from Igbo and Yoruba folks, you'd never hear a word of Edo from the Edo people. However, I do have a course mate from my university who could speak Edo well. He's the only one who i've seen so far who speaks the language.
Also, he loved Igbo quite much that by the time we were graduating he was speaking it averagely.

I read somewhere online about this topic and from the evidence the author gave, the case is really serious. In her work she stated that only 40% of Edo homes speak Edo at home while 60% of Edo homes rather use Pidgin to communicate at home. Even at schools where Edo is taught, the teacher raarely teaches in Edo. Edo teachers use the translation format whereby they'd merely write the Edo forms on the board, translate it to English and teach in Pidgin.

This is a wake up call for the revival of Edo language. Most Nigerian languages are under the threat of English language and it is our right to correct this anomaly. The Igbo language has some children unable to speak it but this phenomenon is mostly observed among the children of the so-called elite society and those children who grew up abroad. Many do later speak it as adults, I myself for example and so many other people I know, while the remaining just don't care.
