omonnakoda:I can assure you those neurosurgeons, radiotherapists etc are the few that are in the country training others because they feel obliged to do so. Imagine if the govt hadn't taken initiative. There are emerging fields in medicine daily and we are speaking out for the govt to key in and sponsor doctors to get trained and to equip hospitals for better training and you disagree where do you stand? |

omonnakoda: University education was free when Abacha was in power what are you talking aboutAre u accusing me of changing posts cause u just did that. I clearly explained to u that the doctors that were sponsored by the govt are in Nigeria. Then, when a doctor graduated he was given a car and apartment. Why would he want to leave? I remember i paid my tuition so i don't know what u are arguing about. I also know that doctors do a mandatory internship and youth service before they get there registration. What exactly is your problem with doctors? |

eaglechild:very big lie. They are graded, you have regristrar, snr registrar, etc.if you pass you can move on with that.yes they sign bond like others that are allowed to even do post grad diploma, but they can ignore the bond and move on .you want only you to be trained but fight optometrists from doing internship in government hospitals,so you don't know that that internship will make them better Doctors of optometry? and patients will benefit from it yet you fight them, your NARD even kicked against their call duty allowance and use your position which ransome kuti erroneously gave to you to see that you stop the allowance but you fail again, dont you know that this action will affect health care negatively. Your people are currently fighting Pharmacists, trying to prevent them from having a post graduate college, you a medical doctor told pharmacists that they should only do masters and Ph.D and not fellowship that you will not allow that(lol),your stupied organization NMA even wrote communiqué in national daily saying that they will not allow others to be consultants and that it is only medical officers that can be consultants, what a way to show gross ignorance.Your NARD fought Radiographers from starting their Ph.D because you don't want them to answer doctor, but you failed ,don't you know that such training will make them better for the patients, yet you fought them and failed, your NARD fought pharmacist from doing their Pharm.D and you still failed, dont you know that this will help them to treat patients better yet you fought them. The fight between you and med lab science is legendary and was it not in Nigeria that a medical dr was made Director of Medical laboratory services in UCH,it failed because other health care workers said they will go on strike. In one state in south south an ophthalmologist was made the chairman of the state's oral health care even with so called consultants dentists around.I feel that Your training is deceiving you to believe you are the head.Head of what? yet when issues come you blame govt.did you ask how our health care was when Hospital administrators ran our hospitals.see what your people did in National health bill and think they will succeed. Thank God this is not military regime so if the bill is even passed in it bad way ,then court will render it useless, some bills have gone that way.you want to grow but don't want others to grow, you want to head, but don't want others to head. You call others support staff and call your self the head, you are ignorant. if only your head, eye or leg is growing without other part growing with it,you will turn to a monster, that is what we are seeing now in our health system and people been paid for going to school feel we should give them our common wealth hook line and sinker to train only themselves but not also others. 1 Like |

gmyguy: what has the world turned to, when a doctor has to argue about his relevance...you cant compare a doctor to anybody, save God. medicine is as old as man, and even before white medicine, doctors were in service. who gives two fs about pilots. were the herbalists not regarded as doctors then, did anybody bother about pilots then. Anyway, pilot needs a doctor and so do you, so doctors win very childish post. |

tunesoft: when my dad died in ,medical drs in government hospital where he died do not know what killed him. My snr bros an architect instructed I do autopsy on him, I did it in 2 different govt hospitals with so called consultant pathologists only for them to give me two different reports which was also different from what the so called medical dr wrote on his death certificate. Three different diagnosis for one man as cause of death.wow ! 9ja wonder! how will they learn when they are using their time to fight others from growing and forget that he who hold somebody on the floor is also on the floor |

josiahriches: no sector of d economy has adequate funding, my candid advice is they should make use of what has been provided and put their brains to work on hw internal revenue can be generated. Pls u doctors should avoid d avoidable. This is totally uncall for even if i dont understand in totality what u want from d govt. if u don't understand what was written its better to be quiet. A department that needs 12 residents has only 1, if patient dies now, u all will be calling for the drs head. When u cut funding, u can't employ staff and u can't train adequately. Training starts at the end of medical school. Residency is the koko. the public is so ignorant, very baffling. The lives of the citizens its what's at stake here. the politicians go abroad for the slightest headache, who do u think is treating them abroad? The consultants and specialists that were adequately trained during their residency in their own country. Shouldn't we want the same for our own doctors in our own country? With the responses I read here, its no wonder the country is like this. Things can't change! The citizens should be demanding better healthcare from the government, but instead are here insulting the doctors that are looking out for them. u all should be striking and demanding to be treated better and for the government to provide a basic human right- good healthcare! |

My, my.... This article has given me quite an insight on several things. One of which is that eloquence and a deft skill in delivering one's point is a vital factor in getting one's message across. Having said that, as a 2nd year resident doctor, in a teaching hospital owned by our government, I can only agree with the op. It needs to be said that our country is bereft of institutions adequate in the much needed facilities required to train a doctor of international standards. We are way behind our colleagues of the developed world that believing we are at par with them is tantamount to believing that the dead can rise again. What I am saying in effect is that if we wait until the day we can 'raise funds' on our own for our training, like one poster suggested, then, well, we might as well be practising traditionalists cos health care cost is indeed very, very expensive with some equipment going for millions of dollars. I do know that health care is heavily subsidized in many developed countries by their govt, a vital key factor most of their citizens can afford health care and while it will be ludacris to assume that the govt should take up 100% of the resp, which by the way is not feasible, let us all agree that we can only make a significant head way ourselves if our govt plays its role in making these things available. Before you all come out with opposing opinions, why is it that we rely on our govt to build roads, infrastructure, and provide light to mention but a few? I mean, we need these basic things so why not get it for ourselves instead of relying on the govt all the time? I will stop there cos even I know that it doesn't make much sense. We can only do so much by paying our taxes etc and trusting the govt to reciprocate by providing the much needed amenities to its citizens which by the way includes a functional health care which is our right. We all tend to take our health care for granted especially when we feel that we are as healthy as an ox. Unfortunately, I know for a fact that as we age, our cells get 'tired' and with that normal occurrence, diseases are given a lee way to thrive in our failing bodies. Do we really need to wait till then to agree that indeed a 'stitch in time saves nine'? We might be on strike but please know that the emergency services are up and running and by so doing, patients are getting the appropriate care that they need. I had to attend to one myself despite been on strike cos we are cut out that way to be compassionate beings. We are only advocating that we need our govt to pay more attention to health care cos at the end of the day, THE LEAST THAT A NIGERIAN DESERVES IS THE BEST HEALTH CARE that can only be achieved if we are adequately trained with the right tools in place. You deserve no less than that. 1 Like |

Amen. I'm preparing for exams and pray that I make it in Jesus name. In my center, the radiology dept is not yet accredited so I wldnt advice you to come since their residents are all leaving for other centers with accreditation. I believe that it's only a matter of time before you get one urself, so have faith. It is also my prayer that the govt really listens cos there are so many things we only get to learn in our books but never practise. It is not only embarrassing but leaves much to be desired when our patients (including us since we are only humans) get to suffer due to lack of basic training and equipment. It is indeed very sad. |

All teaching hospitals are having diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. For example if there is a mass in abdomen, u need imaging studies like MRI, CT and PET to diagnose the mass. 95% of teaching hospitals do not have these machines. In country like malaysia general hospitals have all these. In diagnosis cancer molecular diagnosis is vital. No center is doing molecular testing of cancer. Doctors are fighting for good thing. Allied health workers should support this course because they would have to undergo training to use these equipment as well. josiahriches: no sector of d economy has adequate funding, my candid advice is they should make use of what has been provided and put their brains to work on hw internal revenue can be generated. Am sorry about the loss. May be he had different pathologies that killed him. Each pathologist picked different condition. The problem with pathologists is they are worked. It is worldwide phenomenom. There is shortage of pathologists worldwide. Overworked pathologists are likely to make mistake. Most doctors do not like pathology cos it is mentally stressful and unattractive. College of Ame Path is solving their problems by making it attractive. 3years to be a specialist in clinical or anatomical pathology and 4years for both. ikennahill: |

omonnakoda: Typical arrogance of the ignorant and unexposed Nigerian doctor. Many people go to Hospital and have nothing to do with doctors; Immunization,Antenatal clinics,Physiotherapy,Speech Therapy,Psychology,Counselling,Occupational therapy the list goes on. Doctors are agitating for the government to pay for their training .Why should government do this ? Do they pay for training for pilots, engineers, accountant?,Bankers lawyers etc. Is there any obligation after the training for the doctors to serve the government ? The answer is a big NO!! The doctors in training NARD are paid salaries which together with on call allowances make them the highest paid government employees. They are the ones that should pay government for their training!!, Lovely post coming from a so called doctor. So you've seen someone going to a hospital that tells you he's going to see his laboratoryscientist or his nurse or even his pharmacist without an antecdent referal from a Medical Doctor. Always keep to reasonable and logical posts. People go to school to learn and not to visit the library cos the primary reason for the library is to support the student to learn what they came to the school to do. Antenatal clinic - patient must see a doctor on thir first clinic and every subsequent clinic visit so i don't get your point. Physiotherapy - a physio room is not a gym room my friend....patientsare refered thre and don't just go there for fun(can't beleive I'm just telling you this) Speech therapy - A stroke patient will definitly be seen by a doctor befor any other(any other form of speech impediment is a multi disciplinary problem) Psychology - and what in the world does that mean? Are you refering to psychiatry(which I'll definitely advice you to see one) or a psychologist? Counseling - thought that's done in schools unless you're refering to the medical ones which is an adjunct to a treatment(No patients will dress up and go the hospital to see a counsellor solely unless you're refering to the counselling for HIV and Cancer groups or seeing a psychiatrist. Occupational therapy - I'm sure the word leaves you as perplexed as it does to me and you probably have no idea of what you typed there so I'll let you be. Th issue of highest paid is where you totally lost me. A resident Doctor is a full working doctor who should be paid what obtains for a fully registered doctor. he is as well paid here as in USA or UK or Ghana Or India or anywhere you go to in the world with Nigeria being one of the few countries where peanut is being paid to a fully qualified proffesional all in the name of "they're still learning". Think you should read more about the proffession you "claim" to be a member of(though I highly doubt that you are a Med Doc) before you post such arrant and misleading comment in a forum where the informed and the uninformed like you visits alike. |

Please can anyone show me a link of any country where pathologists are not statutory director of medical laboratories but only medical lab scientist? Can anyone show me a link of any country where pharmacists would dispense drugs without prescription notes? Can anyone tell me reasons why pharmacologist and pharmacy technician can not open pharmacies?are pharmacists not guilty of what they are accusing doctors of? Can i know reason why med lab technicians are not allowed by med lab scientists to grow through recognized short course programme whereas these med lab tech do the same things as scientists and get diff salaries? Can i know a country in world where radiographers do work of radiologist without later supervision? Why med lab scientists are called medical technologists in south africa and usa, and in uk the name is biomedical science? Is there any country in the world where clinical pharmacist or nursing practitioner prescribe drugs without supervision of consultant family physcians? Why is nusing and midw council of nig is not certifying aux nurse as nursing assistant as being done in uk and usa through collaboration with medical directors of private and general hospitals? Why is med lab scientists preventing graduates of biochemistry, physiology, anatomy and microbiology from working in med lab as scientific officers as in uk,usa even south africa? Are pharmacists, nurses , med lab scientists not guilty of what they are accusing doctors of doing by not allowing other grows? Candid reply, pls. |

nas 00: @'on a good day': i decided initially to ignore ur reply because of this statement ( there was no point where I read that certain doctors antagonised improved TRAINING of other health professionals) but on a second tot i felt u r a bit objective for this statement (Therefore, let FG make the necessary provisions for training world class specialists in our obodo 9ja now, that the ard are on strike for a good reason,(if at all there is no ulterio motive) i think everybody should support them .....but for our discussion, answer some of these question OBJECTIVELY 1. Don't u think the strike would have had greater impact if all professionals in the hospitals were included or consulted before the strike. y ddnt they do that 2. Talking about caring for the patient, a doctor is trained mainly to diagnose,a pharmacist mainly on drugs,a nurse on nursing and a lab scientist on lab things, dont you think it will better that as a patient enters the hospital, these 4 pro would be there, while the doctor clarks and comes up with possible diagnoses,he SUGGESTS the drugs he thinks with pharmacist, the pharmacist makes final decision on the drugs and the nurs nurses the patient back to health, the lab man working with the doctor's diff diagnoses tells him what the final diagn b4 he discuses finally with pharmacist on drugs. By so doing if anything goes wrong we would know who to hold responsible...dr did u do d right diagnosis?,lab man where ur tests correct? pharmacist, did u give the right drug(s)? and nurse how did u nurse this patient? instead of doctors diagnosing, prescribing, shadow nursing(because they tell the nurses what to do) and heading labs. 3.you imply you have not seen or heard that drs antagonise the training of other professions...is this first time you have heard that NMA is against pharmacist training to be pharm D. or training to be specialist and bcom consultant, and govt would recognise them just like the drs 4.Do you really think that drs are the most qualified to head hospitals as a whole,be ministers both main and state, and even head nafdac 5.do you think it is right for a drs entry level into civil service to be level 11 while other pro are 7 ,8 or for the pharmacist 9 not even 10 6. dont u think harmony btw this 4 professions is a better care for the patient .........cheers |

The doctors have a genuine reason to go on a warning strike. Why do polticians & wealthy nigerians go abroad for medical treatment? Every day there are appeals for donations on the dailies to raise money to take indigent patients abroad for expert management. The demand of the doctors if successful shall have a multiplier effect on the wellbeing of nigerias & the economy. |
Re: Resident Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Action Today by Nobody: 7:09am On Jun 27, 2013 |
Mind u who and wma have positions on prescription policy.doctors make diagnosis and differentials and order tests blood, urine, tissue imaging, eeg etc. Problems in interpretation are sorted by pathologists or radiologists and inform managing physcians.Problems with many drugs are sorted by pharmacists and inform managing physcians. No where in world pharmacists change doctors prescription. It is unethical to do that.Treatment is ordered. It may be surgeries(surgeon and other surgical specialists, drugs( physcian, clinical pharmacologist, chemical pathologist, toxicologist and pharmacist), blood(haematologist), dialysis(nephrologist) follow up(physcian) lab monitoring(pathologist)immunization(nurse) counselling(nurse or psychologist)diet(nutrionist)exercise(physiotherapy) etc. Management of illness is complex. In some developed countries doctors are doing residency in nutrition, rehabìtative medicine, sport, aviation, pharmacology(now in nigeria) embryology etc. The problem in nigeria health sector is health workers do not understand the system in line with international best practice. Typical nigerians do have ego and tendency to lord over other. I guess health workers are not busy . Always talking and do politics. on a good day: |

Can u compare the working conditions of Doctors to that of Lawmakers who do nothing, but take home #29.5M every month or an Oil worker who earns in the region of #1.5M every month. How much is a Doctor taking? If u think he is overpaid, take a course in Medicine and u'll understand his plight. |

infolekan:You need exposure. All those MUSTS you talk about may be the case in Nigeria the world is very different elsewhwere. Most hospital encounters in many countries have NOTHING to do with doctors and this attitude is the first thing many Nigerian doctors need to change when they travel. Learning how to be subordinate to others is impossible for many and they get kicked out Those who know little always make the most Noise. I say without fear of equivocation that most doctors in Nigeria cheat their way into medical school and all the way through having little knowledge of anything and inflated opinions of themselves. Without exception all you "home based GAMBO" doctors cannot DEBATE without ad hominem attack. The state does not OWE you a training. You should be grateful for what you get and if you don't like it GET OUT. Doctors are 100 naira a dozen and many others will take your place. this residency training sha, well as a doctor i opted out of this residency program,to get into the training is man know man, passing exams is another ball game all together and when you finally pass, you are asked to leave after 6 months grace and you start looking for job as a consultant. the situation of things in most teaching hospitals is really bad now-cutting across few residents in each department, out dated diagnostic equipment, etc. The government has cut funding to teaching hospitals hence the management doesn't employ enough doctors in order to save cost and hence patients suffer in the long run. this is not about the govt to sponsor the training of each doctor or salary issues but to adequately fund the system. |

Yes I agree governments should consider fund the system but when the population does not fight for you or support your cause then you really need to think twice. If your father chooses to marry another wife instead of paying your school fees does that justify selling his property or beating him. By default Nigerian society has decided that quality health care is NOT its priority. The solution is to join politics and fight for doctors but what do doctors do when they are in goverment |
