Must you love your spouse before marriage?
One of the biggest problems singles have in the choice of their spouse is trying to find the one they love. This has led to a lot of late marriages, and some are still not married. It is a device of the devil to cause late marriages and single parenthood. A believer meets a lady he likes. She is beautiful and a true born again. Instead of marrying her, he tells you he does not love her. The love being referred here is emotional love and not the true love. Please understand that true love is not a feeling or an emotion but your sacrificial action for another who does not deserve it. Strong emotions may accompany true love, but it is the commitment of will that does not fail. There is nothing wrong with emotions but it is dangerous when your marriage is based on emotions. Any marriage that is based on emotions or feelings would always fail. For instance, a man who marries a lady because he is emotionally attracted to her slim shape and flat tummy is making a big mistake. Because after a few years or after she may have given birth, her wonderful shape and flat tummy will change. When that happens, the man will no longer be happy with the marriage because his reason for marrying her, which is her wonderful shape and flat tummy, is no longer there. Emotion will change, and may lead to frustration and probably separation. Because emotional love varies, it is not wise to rely on it as a basis for marrying somebody. Because emotional love changes, you may not be emotionally attracted to someone today, but you may become attracted to the same person tomorrow. That is the reason why somebody may emotionally attracted to a person at first sight, and it may take some time to develop emotional love towards another person. Emotional love cannot be relied on; it varies, and as such cannot be a reason for marrying or for not marrying somebody. Though, it is not wrong to have emotional love towards your spouse before marriage. I have to let you know that you can also marry your spouse and develop emotional love towards her or him after the marriage. Isaac married Rebekah before he developed emotional love towards her (Genesis 24:67). The fact is that Isaac couldn’t have loved Rebekah before the marriage because he saw her face only after the marriage. If God directs your steps to your intended spouse who is a true believer, and you like the person, please go ahead and marry him or her. Emotional love is not a criterion for choosing a spouse.
