Sermon Topic; Deciding between good and evil

Let us start this sermon with a prayer;

Prayer to Humanity-
I wish for a better world
where we are less divided
and more united
more knowledge and less faith
more practical solutions and less prayer
a world where science is learnt
and not hated or feared



Dear heathens, infidels and unbelievers, I know that we dont all subscribe to a morality based on divine authority but that doesnt mean that we shouldnt ground our morality. Many of us talk about reason but do we ground our morality in reason? This is the question we should be asking ourselves.

Opening one of my favourite chapters of Dawkins, we are told to be "good for goodness sake". What Dawkins's quote means is that we should be good to others for the simple reason that it is inherently a nice thing to do. We should not be hypocritical and do good only when we are going to receive something in return

But how do we know what is good? How do we know how to ground our morality in reason? The simple answer is using logic to weigh our actions and deeds with respect to harm and survival of our fellow humans. With human experience, we know that this is not easy to do at times but we have to try.

To explain, what I mean by "using logic to weigh our actions with respect to harm and survival" I will give a simple example;

***Mr Logic wants to slap a 10 year old girl. Let's weigh his action-

Pros
-Good practice at hitting someone

Cons
-damaging the little girls face
-sending a bad message to younger men that hitting small girls is okay
-mentally abusing the little girl (should would fear that men can hit her)
-causing unnecessary pain to the little girl

As you can see, the weighing of Mr Logic's action shows that it carries more problems than good. It is a bad action. There are many ways to evaluate one's actions. A "pros and cons" table is just the simplest to illustrate.


Furthermore, brothers and sisters, this simple evaluation of good and bad goes beyond our personal actions. Those of us who are leaders in government or organisations should understand that we should also evaluate the rules or laws we draft on others. We already know the limits and failures of laws not based on reason but on religious authority- such laws are divisive and only work well for the religion in which the law is devised. Rules and laws should consider everyone and not just the majority. This relates to the principle of moral universalism.


Moral universalism (also moral objectivism) is the meta-ethical position that some system of ethics, or a universal ethic, applies universally, that is, for "all similarly situated individuals", regardless of culture, race, sex, religion, nationality, sexuality, or any other distinguishing feature.
Put simply, it means that many moral issues are applicable to all humans despite our differences. However, we should note that this can only happen with the use of a tool that is universally applicable to all human- LOGIC.

To explain this moral universalism, I will give an example- molestation

If a woman says no to having s.ex with a man but the man goes on to have s.ex, that should be molestation in any country. Unfortunately, some societies use religious laws to say that a husband can never molest his wife because they are married. This is not logical.

So, brothers and sisters, we have come to the end of this sermon. Before we leave, remember to put some money in the tithe bag.

How come Jesus still does not save anyone from Diseases? Who created germs?
Jesus did not save you from the devil, because he and demons, and witches are still haunting and taunting christians.
Jesus did not save anyone from sin: You are still sinning everyday and will continue to sin until the day you die.
Jesus left the world a more disease ridden, more fragmented, more confused, more divided, more unjust and more conflicting place than he met it.

And despite supposedly washing away the transgressions of man with his blood, hell is still being heated up to roast billions of humans.

So what exactly did Jesus come for?

See them. Dem wanna put me in their box. I went because I wanted to. Nothing about deism precludes me from going to church. Even some atheists go to church without being forced.
