Soup Kitchen refuses atheist help.

A group called the Upstate Atheists in Spartanburg, South Carolina were rebuffed in their efforts to volunteer at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen.

“I told [the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen] we wouldn’t wear our T-shirts. We wouldn’t tell anyone who we are with. We just want to help out,” Upstate Atheist president Eve Brannon told the Spartanburg Herald-Jounal. “And they told us that we were not allowed.”

Lou Landrum, the Soup Kitchen’s executive director, told the same paper that allowing the atheists to work at the facility would be a “disservice to this community.”


“We stand on the principles of God,” she said. “Do [atheists] think that our guests are so ignorant that they don’t know what an atheist is? Why are they targeting us? They don’t give any money. I wouldn’t want their money.”

Landrum said that “they can set up across the street from the Soup Kitchen. They can have the devil there with them, but they better not come across the street.”

The christian director should have allowed the atheists to help. This is volunteer work and charity- one always needs hands to help the community. The good samaritan was not a christian. Any helping hand is better than none.

However, this should be a lesson to atheists here. While you must relate to christians and other religious people well, always be careful and try to be independent. The atheists that were rejected have now started their own humanitarian project

Religious people are not rational people and atheists have better start coming together to push a collective agenda in whatever form, be it politics, philanthropy or even business. I don't trust people that much, but religious people are the most the most insane sort.

Religious people by basis of their religion are programmed to obey blindly or in a best case scenario with really dark sunshades. Anyone that believes religious books and all it preaches is a very dangerous person and is a potential terrorist in my own view with all the justification required to carry out inhumane tasks in the name of their god.

No one is crying. Even christians are ashamed of what happened. Are the news website that reported it crying? Use your brain to realize that soup kitchens need all the help they can get? To refuse volunteers based on faith is just ridiculous.

I agree with you in the sense that the "cool" religious guys are really pantheists that love the idea of an afterlife hence their seeming monotheistic stance. So yeah, you are right about the "cool" religious guys.
