I agree Nigeria economy is growing but not at the expense of South Africa who to a reasonable extent dominate our market, expanding beyond their shores into ours unlike us. And economic analysts are not always right. Anyway I suggest you read this

this is where you all are getting it wrong. south Africans know better that's why they are buying and having stake in major Nigerian companies and also penetrating into our market whereas same can't be said of Nigeria. Nigeria can only replicate this with other small countries in Africa.

O boy! Are u not a Nigerian? cant you go and buy a South-African company? Abi na who make e buy am for u?

What a fool. You think its by being a local champion. Why not place these banks and companies side by side with their south african counterparts lets see how well they measure up. I'm tired of engaging illiterates on nairaland. These kind of articles has been flying around for ages now and still nothing on ground.
you are a morøn.
GTB won the best bank in Africa twice in a row with one of the biggest capitalization base of an African owned bank.
Globacom is expanding on the continent rapidly, though not yet as big as the relatively more experienced MTN,but it is growing and breaking new frontiers and they are also the first telecommunication company in africa to adopt submarine technology.
Dangote cement is the biggest cement industry in Africa.
Nigerian brewries is probably Africa's biggest brewery company and there are many more examples of Nigerian companies competitiveness in Africa.

She might be an economic illiterate to you but she is to some entent right. Nigerian economy is trully growin bt it's not developing. From developmental economic point of view, as economy grow, poverty is expected to decrease bt Nigeria's case is the otherwise where economy is growin and at the same time, poverty is on the increase and this is caused by majorly the source of nigerian economy growth which has remained the primary products which the country can only boast of. Until we started producin secondary products which cannot be achieve with the problems of infrastructures, education, good governance and their policies and so on.... The growth of the Nigerian economy will be seen as sometin that is only on paper if the growth cannot ensures a good standard of living of the populace.......The economy also needs 2 b diversified.

you don't expect me to start listing all the multi-national Nigerian owned companies that are doing very well.
Even the moribund textile companies are being rescusitated.
Yes,there is poverty and unemployment in Nigeria as well as in Africa and other parts of the world, but then there is also a significant growth and improvement in living standards.
For a country of our size,we need a growth of atleast 11% annually for the next 10 years to drastically reduce poverty and create enough jobs.

Check out the capitalization base of banks like GTB ,ZENITH,FIRST BANK and compare it with their south-african counterparts, you will find out that they are not doing badly at all.
Don't bring morønic statements here and use them as argument.
Btw,intercontinental bank was a very strong bank, crippled by corruption and sharp practices of its owners.

demelza: There is no deceit there. If you would keep aside prejudice for 1min, you would realise the truth. Nigeria is booming, there are countless opportunities available to the discerning mind.
This is one of the reasons I will never understand those who clamour for overseas visas. With the myriad of problems available in this country, it just needs people who can solve them and believe me, there are people who would pay for the solution. Every investor worth his salt, knows that Nigeria is Africa's best kept secret.
My only prayer is that these people shouldn't come and gobble up everything before I have a chance to.

Don't even worry about that. Do you know that demand for all those services is expected to INCREASE over the next few decades, as incomes rise across the board? So there is no question of saturation. The middle class is still small ...but it's growing, and there's still a long way for it to grow.

I don't think it really matters.
China became an economic giant because there were a receipent of huge investments from countries like japan.
Infact many manufacturing companies in china are owned by foreigners.
And it makes sense to explore smaller african countries given the fact that the south-african population has being significantly explored by western companies.

Let the states look for ways to increase their IGR and stop this overdependence on the FG.
Afterall, many of the states are powerful enough to threaten and blackmail the FG.

Nigeria's deep enough debt capital market key to overall growth of economy -- Part 1

Nigeria's SEC recognizes that a debt capital market deep enough to fund critical infrastructure projects for government is material to the overall growth of the economy. To this end the capital market regulator is deepening its partnership with the IFC to help develop the market through an increase in investments by the international lender. ABN's Esther Ugbodaga brings us more.

I really hope South Africa panics as the article puts it, Panic is good for a healthy mind to operate at a higher level. While on the other hand Nigerians are quick to celebrate and be despondent forgetting that there are many rivers to cross and mountains to climb for the Nigerian market to be considered low risk and best destination for investors in Africa.

Nigeria will have to convince investors that they are capable of turning the tide around to a positive on the following:

1. terrorism,
2. corruption,
3. security
4. Infrastructure challenges
5. Oil theft
6. Fraud
Which for now are major issues in investors minds. With the likes of Shell threatening to totally withdraw that cannot be encouraging to other investors. While the "panicking"South Africa continues to majorly invest in Nigera and Africa as whole by the time you sort out your drama, guess who will be standing to beneffit from the foreign global investments in Nigeria? South Africa, bebe! wink

My advice is to stop celebrating SA's panic mode and not measure yourself to a country less populated and more developed, with less to non of the issues listed above. And start measuring yourself to the world. African economies are nothing much to right home about being 1, or 2 in Africa and no show in the world is no achievement and something to "panic" over. wink
