Igbanke From Edo State To Delta State. by AndreUweh(m): 11:32pm On Oct 12, 2013
WHOEVER MADE THE DECISION TO LUMP IGBANKE INTO EDO STATE SHOULD BE SHOT OR HANDED OVER TO ME TO DO JUSTICE.

I attended Edo State Day 2013 on 21st September 2013, organised by Edo State National Association UK.
From the personal greetings, the music, the introduction of guests to the the Master of Ceremony, every single sentence was in Bini language.

I felt like a fish out of water. I couldn't hear or understand a single word. I felt alien to the event, an alien in the midst of my supposed fellow Edolites. A stranger in my own State! Before you admonish me for not engaging, I can tell you that I did engage but everyone was engrossed in Bini language. I don't blame them. They are the majority but I had expected some translation of some sorts but all that was said was that if you don't understand Bini, just say Amen to some spoken words that I have no clue about. This is selfishness at the highest order.

I have to say that I have nothing against Bini people and hold them in high esteem. I accord the Bini's huge respect. I have them as my friends, as in laws and as cousins but I HAVE TO SAY THAT WHOEVER MADE THE DECISION TO LUMP IGBANKE INTO EDO STATE SHOULD BE SHOT. The relationship is so unbalanced and unequal. It is very difficult to get on when you can't relate to a single spoken word. If you attend a meeting and can't understand a word, how are you meant to represent your people? How do you pick up issues that borders on your people?

It is a big shame that Igbanke have to put up with this absurdity; an alien in the company of their supposed State Indigenes. Those our people who continue to say that Igbanke is Edo are so WRONG and far removed from reality. Unless, you can speak or understand Bini, one is alienated, completely at sea and lost big time.

The relationship is synonymous to a forced marriage, so unequal, so unbalanced and so wrong!
From Gloria Adagbo, a pround Anioma and Igbo daughter.

They should take advantage of the national conference and present their case.the same goes for the ijaw areas of ondo state, they should reunite with their kit and kin in delta state and the igbira in edo should be moved to join their people in kogi state.

If I may ask, what benefit would they derive by "re - uniting" with their kith and kin"? Ok so they get to understand the language spoken when they attend meetings and so? What happens when they attend a Delta meeting and the moderators choose to speak Urhobo instead what next? They should also start agitating for all Igbo speaking tribes to be carved into Anambra state? At least thats the line your logic seems to lead.

In Delta state they will feel more secured there because of their kins there. In Delta state, there interests such as language and culture will be more protected as in their present location.
But whatever the case, they they prefare Delta state to Edo state. Is there any thing wrong with that.

we don't have Igbira in Edo, all of them in Edo are here for farming, so there's no community in Edo state called Egbira community, but we have common boundary

@OP,
sometimes when it comes to this kind of issue, i'd tell you they use the Natural Boundary to justify the issue.
Like a big River separating two states, we have a natural boundary with Ondo state ie Okpe (Edo) has a natural boundary with Idogun (Ondo) and Aiyeteju (Edo) has a natural boundary with Imeri (Edo), the is Akoko Edo (Edo) and Ose LG (Ondo), the Natural bandary is River Ose.
We still have with Kogi, a river between Lampese (Edo) and Mangogo (Kogi) is the Boundary.
Maybe if you check very well you'll see a Natural boundary in your place too

why is it that yorubas enjoys it when their allies obilitrates the minorities.

what the bini people did is very wrong, i wonder why its so hard for our sw brothers to say the truth when it come to other peoples issue instead they choose to poison everything to keep nigeria imbalance to minorities.

How will uhrobo, isoko, ijaw and ibo people feel if they come to Delta state general meeting anywhere and found out that everything are done in itshekiri language? when a state is missed-up with other tribes the right thing to do in general meeting is using a language known by many.

i will not like it when my idoma people did it to anyother group so also i will not like it when it is done to my people or anyother people.

The logic in the above post is the reason the poster never made JAMB or passed any scholastic aptitude test in his miserable life. A question the dumbass such as you should ask is “what language of communication is used during the celebration of Delta State Day”, olodo.

The major languages spoken in the state are Ebira,Edo, Esan and ika/Okpamheri.EdoState is home to several ethnicities,so perhaps there were more of Benin present at the occasion which is Why edo was used. don't come with Your land grabbing attitude here... igbanke is of the ika stock and Never igbo. in such gathering in Delta. we speak either English or pigeon.

Smallie, your post above is senseless. It's not about Igbo but Igbanke being in Edo state and doesn't not fit into Edo ways of life. Igbankes feel comfortable in Delta state where they have their kins.
Please be reasonable and don't make it an Igbo issue here.

@op, the being of igbanke in edo state shouldnt be blamed on anyone, but the blame should go to the ancestors who encroached on a community land at will. The question u ought to be asking urself is how did ur people get to where they are today, even the ikas and the rest of the bendel ibo in delta state.

It is clear that most moronic scoundrels (minorities) shouting about the ills of domination will be first to dominate other if they found themselves in majority. Imagine the idiocy of choosing Bini as medium of expression during Edo State Day celebration knowing fully well that Edo State is multiethnic.

Why should Gloria and her kins learn bini language and not the other way round? Maybe you lack in depth into the complexities of what is on ground but it's a great deservice to the igbanke people that they were lumped into Edo state. Ogbemudia master minded this nonsense out of greed and self interest not minding the consequences it was going o have on many generations.

The description of the event given by Ms. Gloria Adagbo is not accurate. I am not in the UK and did not attend - however, I have already seen a video clip from the 2013 gathering, posted on facebook, where a pastor is speaking. This pastor is speaking in English:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201894013771428

Yes, there may be more of Bini cultural representation and a large number of Binis speaking among themselves at such an event because the Bini may constitute the largest number of people from Edo state in the UK that are interested in attending that event. But to say that "every single sentence" could have been in Bini (Edo) is simply a lie. I wonder whether she actually attended the event. Either she attended the event and is deliberately misrepresenting it, or she didn't attend at all.

Apart from the video, which shows that at the 2013 event, speeches were obviously being given in English, there is clear evidence that the 2012 event could not have been conducted in 'Bini' (Edo) language:

A description of the 2012 event, available from a post on the facebook page for the event:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Edo-State-Day/235796323192918

Shows that

a) "Mr. Peter Ibiang Bassey, Counsellor Political Section, who represented the Nigeria High Commissioner to United Kingdom" was in attendance, and he gave a speech in which he "encouraged Edo State associations in UK to join CANUK in order to play a key role in advancing the needs of Nigerians in United Kingdom." Am I supposed to believe Mr. Bassey spoke any of the languages found in Edo state at that event?

b) Representatives of the governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, were at the event as well.

c) The Presidents of the Esan Community Association United Kingdom, Afemai Union of United Kingdom, and the Ewossa Community Association (UK), were all part of the organizing committee for the 2012 event.

d) Performances were given by people from the Afemai and Esan areas of Edo state, not just from the Bini areas:

https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/405268_275519239220626_815138281_n.jpg

I think it's rather obvious that most (if not all) speeches would have been in English both in 2012 and 2013, and that Ms. Adagbo is telling tall tales. If the 2012 event was organized by, and included speeches and performances from multiple non-Bini individuals, it makes no sense to assume that the 2013 event was solely an affair conducted in the 'Bini' (Edo) language, especially when there is already evidence of a pastor speaking in English at the 2013 event.

Furthermore, is there an Igbanke association in the UK? If there is, they obviously could have been part of the organizing committee and thus had some cultural representation, speeches, or performances from people from their group. Of course, if it's the case that the vast majority of the Igbanke don't want to be in Edo state, as Ms. Adagbo makes it seem, that might explain why they were reluctant to contribute to an event about Edo state and why they didn't have a role in organizing the event.

That said, while I don't have any real issue with Igbanke being transferred out of Edo state (that's just me personally, some other people might object), I think people should realize that some of the supposedly linguistically homogenous states in Nigeria are not actually perfectly homogenous, and include speakers of languages that are from language groups other than the majority group of the state - this doesn't just apply to Edo state but to some other states as well. So it's not necessarily some conspiracy against Igbanke that they wound up in Edo state.

I totally disbelieve the possibility of the posters story for 2 reasons:

A large number of young Binis do no speak the language. I'm Bini and a proud one at that, but I cannot make a full sentence in Bini language.
If I were in the event as described by the poster, I would have been lost as I would not understand what they had to say.

Secondly, Edo is such a multicultural state and I think the most liberal in the whole of the country. The Esan population which is almost as large as the Bini population do not share exactly the same language with the Binis. If they were at that event, it will make no sense to speak Bini.

Now, it is important to note that Edo is both a language and a tribe before it became the name of a state.Edo tribe has been for centuries while the state just came into being in 1991. Edo is the language spoken by the Bini people. It is possible the poster attended an event that was meant not for Edo as a state but for the Edos as a tribe.

However, Physicsqed has presented evidence that shows that the poster was not entirely truthful.

Yorubas in Kogi are not complaining. They are not intimidated by other people speaking their language or observing their culture. Yorubas have a wholesome universal view in a multicultural society.

Igbos continue to whine and complain and intolerant of others. You live in a multicultural nation, if its darn important for you to hear and understand others, then learn their language doggone it.........or relocate into alaigbo where you can understand and be understood when you and your people grunt to one another.

You people up in that Edo state are confused.

Bini is a class, it is the ruler-elite class unique to the palace. Bini is foreign to your land, which is Edo. Ive preached this to Physics time and again..........but instead of looking at oral history of Edo, you people prefer going to European chroniclers to explain who you are.

Edo is indigenous and the Ogiso came out of the Edo culture.

Bini is foreign and an Ife elite class that has continued to rule in Edo land, beginning centuries ago with Oranyan.

English language is not native to your land. Bini language today is a admixture of Yoruba and Edo. You are the majority in Edo state and you should standup and assert your majority instead of explaining it with apologies.

Tell Igbankes to begin learning your culture and language or they should join the National Conference talk and demand a reunion with Umuahaia.
