It happened to a friend of mine who hails from Akwa Ibom (Name is Sunday). He was third out of 4 children born by his parents. His father had always told him of 'evil relatives' and 'unseen forces' that seemed to be after him.

And that was the main reason they refused to go back there when his father was posted to Yola. While they were growing up, they went on a home visit to akwa Ibom and on arriving back @ Yola the eldest child died mysteriously without actually falling ill. So they decided never to go back to the village.

While they were playing football on a ptclar evening n the ball had strayed into the main road. Their lastborn ran to pick the ball & got hit by a speeding car. The boy was rushed to a nearby clinic but dint survive.

My friend(Sunday) was outside their house on a Saturday morning n he was on his way to fetch some water from a nearby well. There had been parked outside their compound a SARS(Special Anti-Robbery Squad) Hilux vehicle. The force men had come to purchase stuff in a Supermart close to my friend's compound n one of the policemen had stayed to guard their vehicle. Whatever the policeman was thinking or whatever took over him, I can't say but while holding his rifle he had tried closing one of the doors of the vehicle n the rifle fired in my friends direction n hit him in the leg. But thankfully he survived without any bone fracture though the flesh was bruised.

You probably didn't get my drift. What I said mainly was that witchcraft being thot of as harmful is often treated as a cultural ideology providing a scapegoat 4 human misfortune.(meaning that if there seems to be too many misfortunes befalling a particular person/family/group/society, people would usually try to provide a scapegoat as being responsible for such misfortunes whether true or false (there r plenty of stories on Newspapers to support this).

The immediate elder brother got admission into FUTY in Yola and was in 200L. He started dating a chic who unknowingly to him was also bin eyed by a cultist within the school. He got a number of threats both as text msgs and also physically and he stopped visiting her and asked her to also stop visiting him. The girl probably felt abused from based on a text she sent him and she may have reported him to the cultist BF(whom she had now yielded to). As fate (or the unseen forces) would have it, the guy was attacked and macheted. He was taken to the hospital and placed on drips and treatment for 4 days before he gave up the ghost leaving my friend Sunday as the only child.

A cousin of his started staying with them after losing her own parents. My friend started learning how to cut men's hair while he was waiting for WASSCE result. He told me that all his thots at this point was not to proceed further with his education and he started becoming suspicious of everything n everyone around him. He was always very aware of his environment. He had started drinking and smoking to console himself and particularly to prevent himself from worrying as much as he did then.
