Eaglets depart for Congo midweek

Nigeria U17 national team, the Golden Eaglets, are expected to travel this week for their second round-first leg fixture against Democratic Republic of Congo in Lubumbashi

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) graciously shifted their qualifier against the Congolese U17 from July 20 to July 27, to enable Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) put its house in order.

Solidarity

This is following the suspension from football activities by FIFA.

The suspension has since been lifted and the rank and file of the team is buoyed with the message of solidarity and support from far and near.

Nigeria are the defending Champions of the FIFA U17 World Champions.

Eaglets coach warns against internet fraudsters

Emmanuel Amuneke (MON), Golden Eaglets' Head coach, has sent out a warning against online scammers, while categorically denying having a Facebook account.

The former Barcelona of Spain forward insists that he should not be associated with an impostor on the social web.

Fiction

A certain person has for long been parading himself as the 1994 African Footballer of the Year on Facebook but Amuneke said it was nothing but a fictitious account since he's not on any social media for that matter.

- I'm not on Facebook and I'm not ashamed of saying so, Amuneke said. The only thing I do on my phone is receiving calls and at worst, use the short message service (sms) but count me out of anything outside that.

Unfortunate

Amuneke said it was unfortunate that 'one clown' would be using his personality in order to deceive unsuspecting public, warning Nigerians to be wary of the impersonator. As at the last check, the copycat claimed Amuneke attended Ahmadu Bello University amongst other things.

- I'm not on Facebook, I don't tweet and in fact, I don't have any social media account, Amuneke maintained. I don't have the time for such and my colleagues here know I'm not part of the crowd on social network.

- Any Emmanuel Amuneke with my photograph on Facebook is a fraud and I'm using this opportunity to warn the public so that nobody fools them, Amuneke added.

Amuneke targets Eaglets win in DR Congo Coach of Nigeria U17 team

Emmanuel Amuneke has said he expects his team to beat their DR Congo counterparts on Saturday in an African championship qualifier. "We must go to Congo with the sole of objective of winning and that is the mental attitude we are must all have," noted the 1994 African Footballer of the Year.

"We must be ready to show all what we have been learning in our training and we the coaching crew believe that you have what it takes to win this match but we must not be over confident."

He added: "Now is the moment of truth for us because the serious business of qualification for Niger 2015 would begin for us in Congo (DR).

"All what we have done before is now in the past because we would now be judged based on our performance particularly in this match."

A squad of 18 players along with officials led by Amuneke flew into Lagos on Wednesday's evening from the team's base in Calabar for Kinshasa via Nairobi aboard Kenyan Airlines.

The eagerly awaited match according to Federation Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA) will take place on Saturday after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) graciously shifted it from July 20 due to earlier suspension of the NFF by FIFA.

Eaglets land in Kinshasa after 10-hour flight

After almost 10 hours flying, Nigeria U17 team, the Golden Eaglets, landed Thursday safely in Kinshasa, capital of DR Congo, brimming with confidence ahead of a 2015 second round qualifier.

The team, who departed their Calabar base for Lagos on Wednesday, flew out of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) same night aboard Kenya Airways and made a stopover in Cotonou before embarking on a five-hour nonstop journey arriving at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport 8:30 am local time(6:30am Nigerian time).

They boarded immediately another two-and-half hour Kenya Airways flight for DR Congo and finally touched down at the N'djili Aeroport International in Kinshasa exactly 10:10am local time exactly the same time in Nigeria.

After completing immigration formalities, the Eaglets were received by Masiala Gaspard of the protocol department of Federation Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA).

The contingent was later driven to Kampo Hotel on Avenue de la Commune and they are already settling down even as officials from the Nigeria embassy have promised to assist them for a successful outing on Saturday.

Victor Osimhen is Eaglets goals hope

Victor Osimhen has been tipped to score the goals for Nigeria Golden Eaglets against hosts DR Congo in an African U17 Championship qualifier on Saturday.

Osimhen is undoubtedly the Eaglets on-form striker based on recent performance after he scored a brace in the team's 4-2 win against Egypt in Cairo earlier this month.

The Eaglets have scored an average of three goals per match after amassing an impressive 63 goals in 1 matches.

And skipper Kelechi Nwakali has backed Osimhen to be among the goals against the Junior Leopards.

"If there is any player I'm sure of scoring a goal at least against Congo, it is Victor because he has improved tremendously," predicted Nwakali.

"One other thing I'm also sure about of this match is that we are going to win by the special grace of God."

The young striker is also one of the team's top scorers - jointly in second position with Suleiman Abdullahi on six goals and behind Kehinde Ayinde on seven.

"My focus now is on the match against Congo (Democratic Republic) and that has always been my style days before an important game," said the youngster.

"The good thing is that we have good attacking force in this team and my prayer is that I should be one of our goal scorers against Congo DR."

Amuneke: Eaglets will get the job done in DRC

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke has said Nigeria Golden Eaglets will get the result in Saturday’s African U17 Championship qualifier in DR Congo.

The match is fixed for 3:30pm local time (3:30pm Nigerian time) at the Tata Raphael Stadium in Kinshasa.

"We are here to win and it is as simple as that, but we know that the game would not be as simple as that," said Amuneke.

"We have constantly told the boys that all what we had done in the past are now in the past and the moment of serious business is here for us."

He added: "The only difference between Saturday's match and the ones we had played in the past is just the circumstance because this is one of the qualifiers for Niger.

"So, it is important for us to win irrespective of what Congo would throw at us because we know Kinshasa is a difficult place to win matches.

"What we have is a team with winning mentality and we have brought players we believe would do the job for us."

The match will be staged on the artificial pitch of Tata Raphael Stadium.

The match was earlier scheduled for the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi, but the Federation of Congolese Football Association (FECOFA) only informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about the changes few days before the Golden Eaglets' departure.

The Tata Raphael Stadium is the same venue local side AS Vita Club humbled Kano Pillars 3-1 in an African Champions League fixture in February.

Meanwhile, CAF have picked officials from Cameroon to handle the second round - first leg fixture expected to be watched by a capacity crowd.

The referee is 31-year-old Antoine Max Depadoux Effa Essouma who became an international referee in 2013 with his compatriots, 40-year-old Thierry Bruno Tocke and 36-year-old Hamadou Sadou serving as first and second assistants respectively.

The fourth official is 36-year-old Mandeng Bakalay Cosmas Jerome, while Michel Gasingwa from Rwanda is match commissioner.

Eaglets beat hosts DR Congo 1-0

Nigeria Golden Eaglets got off to a winning start when they pipped hosts DR Congo 1-0 in an African U17 Championship second round qualifier in Kinshasa on Saturday. Victor Osimhen was the match winner for the Nigeria schoolboys in the 13th minute.

The return leg will be played in Calabar in a fortnight with the winners clashing with the overall winners of the game between Ethiopia and Gabon.

The first leg between Ethiopia and Gabon finished goalless in Ethiopia.

AfricanFootball.com learnt that it was a flattering result for the home team as the Eaglets threw away many begging chances.

Amuneke disappointed Eaglets fail to take chances

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke has said even though the Golden Eaglets won 1-0 in DR Congo, he was disappointed they failed to put away the numerous chances they created on Saturday.

The Nigeria U17s would have won by a wide margin, but in the end had to settle for a 13th minute winner by on-form Victor Osimhen at the packed Tata Samuel Stadium in Kinshasa.

"I'm not happy despite the fact that we won this match," Amuneke complained."

If we had taken our chances, the story would have been different because we had all the chances but we wasted so much."

Amuneke further praised the home team for their fighting spirit after conceding an early goal, adding that his boys would have to raise their game in the reverse fixture in a fortnight.

"We have seen what the Congolese can do and that means more work for us in the second leg but we are positive of going through eventually," he stated.

Les Leopards took the kick off exactly 3:30pm local time (3:30pm Nigerian time) after centre referee 31-year-old Antoine Max Depadoux Effa Essouma signalled the start.

Nigeria soon took over with captain Kelechi Nwakali drilling the ball through the middle to find Usman Abass on the left wing. Abass evaded his marker and wasted no time with an inch-perfect cross for gangling Victor Osimhen to nod straight into the net for the first goal of the match in the 13th minute.

The goal woke up the home team and Nigeria were nearly punished in the 25th minute when Chris Mutomb capitalised on a missed kick by Lukman Halilu, but his well-struck shot was parry away by goalkeeper Akpan Udoh.

It was Congo who nearly scored again in the 40th minute, when Rodrigue Masini Dimbua capitalised on a defensive mix-up in the heart of Nigerian defence, but his lively shot bounced off the post into corner.

Two minutes later, Nigeria won a free kick on the periphery of Congolese box but Nwakali's well-struck effort also ricocheted off the post.

Nigeria took the restart on resumption of second half but it was the Congolese who showed more hunger as they were buoyed by their fans.

Thereafter, it was a ding dong affair with near misses by both sides as the game dragged to an end.

Abeokuta hosts Eaglets return qualifier

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have picked Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta for the Golden Eaglets return leg African qualifier against DR Congo this weekend. This was as a result of on-going renovation work at the U. J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The Eaglets pipped hosts DRC 1-0 in the first clash last Saturday.

The Nigeria U17s are booked into the Intercontinental Suites and had a brief training session Monday evening to shake off jet lag after about 12-hour flight from Kinshasa via Nairobi to Lagos and resumed their routine training only on Tuesday.

"We have no problems playing here in Abeokuta in spite of the fact that our fans in Calabar would miss us," said Prince Udofia, the team coordinator.

"In fact, we are gratefully to the Ogun State Football Association led by Ganiu Majekodunmi, who has ensured that all is well since our arrival here."

Meanwhile, Abeokuta is home coming of sorts for Golden Eaglets goalkeeper, Akpan Udoh.

Though he hails from South-South in Akwa Ibom, Udoh has lived mostly in Ogun State-precisely in Ijebu-Remo.

The former U13 goaltender attached to Remo Football Academy was one of the lads picked by Uplift Team - a project by Mrs. Mrs. Olufunso Amosun - to tour Udinese last year.

"I'm happy to come back to Abeokuta particularly with the national U17 team," said Udoh, who was a silver medal winner for Ogun State at the 2013 chief of Naval Staff Cup.

"We are looking forward to a good game against Congo DR. and we are therefore, calling on the fans to come and cheer us on Saturday."

EAGLETS SET UP GABON FINAL QUALIFIER

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will battle Gabon in the
final round of the African U17 Championship after

Congo and Ethiopia respectively.

Eaglets beat DRC 4-0 in Abeokuta on Sunday to

The overall winners of the match-up between
Nigeria and Gabon will qualify for next year’s
African Junior Championship to be staged by
Niger Republic in February.

In other qualifiers, Benin went through 1-0 on

draw, Cameroon eliminated Burkina Faso 2-0 on
aggregate, Angola stopped Mozambique 3-2 after
two legs and Cote d’Ivoire went through at the
expense of war-torn Libya after they won the first
leg in Abidjan 4-0 and the return match was

Golden Eaglets thrash Les Leopards

Nigeria's U-17 team, Golden Eaglets are through to the final qualifying round of the 2015 African Championship to be hosted in Niger after a 5-0 aggregate win against Les Leopards of Congo Democratic Republic.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg second round match played in Kinshasa last weekend, the Golden Eaglets confirmed their superiority yet again with a 3-0 win at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Sunday in front of appreciative home fans.

Dominated

There were first half goals for Suleiman Abdullahi, Victor Osimhen while Kehinde Ayinde and Samuel Chukwueze added the other two in the second half.

The Golden Eaglets dominated the game right from the outset with some good positional play but failed to convert early chances.

But with 30 minutes gone, Suleiman Abdullahi scrambled the ball into the net for the first goal after the Congolese failed to clear a shot taken Kingsley Michael and dropped by goalkeeper Sese Bia Israel.

Long range

Michael nearly added the second goal five minutes later when his long range shot was parry away by Israel. From then, the Golden Eaglets mounted pressure forcing the Congolese to concede a corner in the 42nd minute.

Suleiman took the resultant free kick and Victor Osimhen nodded into the net after Israel's failed to hold tightly to the ball.

At the restart, the Congolese nearly pulled a goal back in the 47th minute but Djemes Diala's angular shot was caught by Goalkeeper Akpan Udoh.

Udoh was also at his best few minutes later when he touched away Mutatu Mbedi's well struck free kick.

Gifted

Amuneke pulled out injured Chinedu Ndu for Samuel Chukwueze and it was the gifted striker that provided Kehinde Ayinde to bury the ball beyond Israel for the third goal in the 67th minute.

The last moment was very dramatic as Abdullahi saw his ball hit the goal post after the goalkeeper has been well displaced by Chukwueze in the 89th minute.

But Chukwueze still had the final word when he drove the ball into the net with almost the last kick of the match.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets would now meet Gabon in the third and final round towards a place in the next African U-17 Championship after the latter eliminated Ethiopia on a 3-0 aggregate on Saturday.

abatically:

They don't need to be retired, they are past their best and are playing in some unknown teams. Half baked information u say? You want facts and quotes? I will give them to u.

Let's take a look at the 2005 U20 championship when we had a 'supposedly' future super eagles team.

Nigeria: Onyekachi Akpam (18), Taiye Taiwo (20), Mikel Obi (18), Chinedu Ogbuke (19), Sani Kaita (19).

Now take a look as other teams the then Nigeria team was dominating.

Spain: Raul Albiol (19), Juanfran (20), Llorente (20), David Silva (19), Fabregas (20). All of them are still playing top football and are still in their peak.

Argentina: Pablo Zabaleta (20), Ezequel Garay (18), Fernando Gago (19), Lionel Messi (17), Sergio Aguero (17). They form a good bunch of the Argentina current national team and still playing top level football.

These are just a few.. Our biggest star in that competition (Mikel) is currently a calamity and would probably not play for the Super Eagles again. I'm not saying every youth player should play for the national team, but at least lots of them are still playing at top level in their clubs while our own players have all faded away.
What about the Dutch players like Zuiverlon, Owusu Abieye, Collins John, Maduro, Kruys.

The Chilean team, Only Marti Fernandez became a top star.

What of Patricio Perez, the Argentine 10 in that tourney aka the Wheel Steerer.

Leave that talk. Our players like Obasi and Mikel are still top professionals.

NIGERIA'S GOLDEN EAGLETS AXE 5 PLAYERS

Five players have been dropped by Nigeria U17s as they step up their preparation for an African Championship qualifier against Gabon in September.

The players are Ebije Yahaya, Prince omosowhofa, Chinedu Madueke, Kingsley Ohiri and Kabiru Muhammed-incidentally all midfielders-and have since left the team's camp in Calabar.

The five who were given the marching order, according to the coaching crew, have significantly dropped in form and have contributed little to the fortune of the team in recent times.

The Golden Eaglets dispatched Congo Democratic Republic on a 5-0 aggregate early this month, but coach Emmanuel Amuneke said there was no room for complacency.

"The party is over and it is about time we forget about what we had done recently," Amuneke told the players.

"But it is unfortunate that some have not really measured up to the standard we expected.

"We must now focus our attention squarely on Gabon because it would be their desire to qualify for the Under-17 Championship in Niger."

"We have reasonably pruned down the list based on the need of the team according to their performance in comparison to others," explained Emeka Amadi, goalkeepers' trainer, adding that the coaching crew has a pool of players to be called upon when need arises.

"The good thing is that we are in a process of
raising a team that can defend the World Cup won in 2013 and we would continue to shuffle the team from time to time since we have about 45 players registered with Confederation of African Football (CAF)."

[b]Nigeria's Eaglets held in test game

Nigeria's U17s, the Golden Eaglets, were held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday by Majesty Soccer Academy at the University of Calabar's Abraham Ordia Stadium.

Eaglets Sunday Alimi's first-half goal was cancelled courtesy of a penalty goal by Effa Edet in the second half.

"This kind of opposition is good for us since it would let our boys know that nobody would dash us anything," said Amuneke.

"The boys actually lifted their game in the second half and maybe we could have run away with a win, but for that unfortunate error that caused the penalty."

The former African Footballer of the Year said the friendly against Majesty Academy was another opportunity to ascertain the readiness of the team towards their forthcoming 2015 African U17 Championship qualifier against Gabon in September.

The Eaglets started the match with an experimental line-up as coach Amuneke gave rare starting shirts to the likes of Dauda Abdulganiyu, Nuru Umar, Adewale Adeyinka, and Sunday Alimi among others.

But it was Alimi, former national U15 star who scored the opener in the 12th minute as he slotted the ball off a diagonal pass from Umar behind Majesty Academy's goalkeeper Charles Patrick.

Yet, there was little or nothing to choose from both sides thereafter and they merely resulted to huffing and puffing of the ball from one end to the other.

On resumption of the second half, Amuneke brought into the fray some of his regulars including captain Kelechi Nwakali who soon took over the midfield and enlivened the pitch with his remarkable style as the Eaglets piled more pressure on the opposition.

However, against the run of play in the 62nd minute, Majesty's Brown James broke into the Eaglets goal area after outpacing defender Anas Mohammed from the flank, but he was wrestled down in the box by Dayo Femi.

The resultant penalty kick was converted by Effa Edet as he sent Eaglets goalkeeper Amos Benjamin the other way.

Thereafter, Majesty defended in their numbers to keep the prowling Golden Eaglets strikers Victor Osimhen and Kehinde Ayinde at bay for the remainder of the match.

EAGLETS DUMP DABO BABES 3-0

Nigeria U17s, the Golden Eaglets, beat Dabo Babes FC of Kano 3-0 in a hard-fought game played on Saturday at the Abraham Ordia Stadium inside the University of Calabar.

"The Golden Eaglets pounced on us like lions and they showed how good they are with the way they played against us," exclaimed Dabo Babes coach Umar Sale.

"But we are happy we were able to make this trip since it has exposed our players to the national team selectors and I think a player like Dauda, our number 10 players would be good for the Golden Eaglets too."

Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze scored two lovely goals, while Abdulrazak Sani of Dabo Babes conceded an own goal as the Eaglets sealed their 23rd win in 27 matches.

Parading the duo of Mustapha Salisu and Nazifi Yahaya, who were part of the national U15s, who won the soccer gold medal at the last All African Youth Games in Botswana, Dabo Babes started the game strongly and Shurubak Dauda nearly put them in the lead as early as the sixth minute, but Eaglets goalkeeper Ebuka Nwokoecha held firmly to his shot after he had won the ball off Halilu Zakari.

Osimhen, however, opened the Eaglets goal account in the 16th minute when he jabbed the ball behind goalkeeper Muhammad Ismail from a pullout from right winger, Promise Orji.

Osimhen could have added another goal, but he wasted the chance in front of an empty goalpost as he placed the ball wide off the mark after robbing the ball off onrushing Ismail.

Yet, the Eaglets mounted further pressure and the measure of their spirited effort was there for all to see when Dabo Babes hardworking captain, Abdulrazak Sani, put the ball into his own net off a pull out meant for Osimhen from Kehinde Ayinde.

Some few minutes later, Ismail was at his best again when a goal-bound shot by Orji was parried away into safety.

Both sides made few changes on resumption in the second half but there was little or no excitement until the 80th minute when the adventurous Chukwueze broke loose in his typical fashion, flew past three defenders before slicing an angular shot beyond the reach of Ismail yet again.
