Truly I like languages very well and I thank God that my parents spoke my monther tongue to me while I was growing up, making me fluent in my dialect. In addition to my dialect wich is Igbo, I learnt Hausa and can speak that too.

I even need more, so I even learnt French and can speak it moderately. I am just happy that I know how to speak them especially my own dialect.

But I know that generations of these days, many don't even know how to speak their dialect at all, as result of being brought up by Turenci (hausa word for English) parents. Parents that only blow grammar to their kids, thereby making them incapable of flowing their dialect.

To me I feel that those that cannot speak their dialect are seriously missing in actions. Not even the amebo that most people like doing these day that they can participate on in public discussions.

The funniest thing is that some of them that even claimed that knowing how to speak only English has help them get fluent in English, but together with the local dialects that I can speak, I can even still blow the English grammar more than many of them, indicating that knowing your dialect and other ones has nothing to do with knowing or not knowing how to speak English.

So for those that falls into the category of not being able to blow your dialect, especially the so called Aje butters, are you having any regrets for that?
Cha cha cha cha cha....,.Ndi Igbo kwenu! So una see say I tite for my language? Proudly Igbo come rain come sunshine...even though I knew quite alright that it was not a choice for me to make in determing which ethnic group I want to be born into but by chance. If given the choice or power to choose, I will definitely choose Igbo again and again and again.

As an Igbo man, I speak Igbo to a communicable extent, but not perfectly like I wanted. I usually mix it with English and can never speak it without mixing it with borrowed words from english. I speak yoruba too as the same degree I speak Igbo, but I speak English and Pidgin fluently.

Hmmm true @topic....
I wonder why "modern" parents of today nolonger deem it fit to teach their children their languages and soonest Nigerian languages will go extinct...
Look around you and tell us how many kids speak their local languages among themselves while relating to parents or siblings, all of them feel comfortable in another man's dialect imported during the time when Africans where used as slaves...
Most Nigerians in Diaspora do not allow their kids come home even on holidays to mingle and learn traditions too, they don't speak local dialect with them over there, despite having local names.
I hate when children can't speak their local languages and they still murder the little english they manage to learn while talking.
I think the trend should stop biko, don't just give them local names while depriving them of speaking their dialects, let them visit grandparents once in a year atleast and make your mode of communication to be in your local languages even if both parents are not of the same tribe or ethnic groups, one of them should devout time to teach them african languages and values...

I am proudly from d east and I tear d language anyhow and even attended a university in d east to learn more of my culture since I was brought up in Lagos.I speak yoruba too,a little french and pidgin very well. For me,any person of African descent who cannot speak his or her language is culturally handicapped. And those who see their language as dirty to speak to their kids can be described as having a feeling of inferiority complex. While growing up,I wrote articles for magazines and in my first semester of first year,my article was chosen from my department for a faculty publication. So who says the best grammarians are the ones who learnt only a borrowed english language

My son is now growing the way I did............Our language first grin
