Matters arising.....Since most refer to Nigerian doctors as quacks, It is time for Nigerian doctors to start looking at alternatives of working abroad (Uk, US,Australia,Ireland etc). Writing foreign exams...get a license to practice is the way to go now. Not just the money but improving your skills. Plab notes (Not free) and guidance (Free) available on request. 3 Likes |

HNosegbe: That letter seems to refer to doctors on RESIDENCY TRAINING. I don't think all docs have been sacked. I don't know how true but I think resident doctors are more in hospitals |

moluv2: u r one of the educated illiterates hu dnt kno a thing abt d medical proffesion and yet claim to kno so much.a house officer is NOT a resident dr! So wen u say " dis r guys dt avent gone 4nysc" it shows u av no clue @ all! And just listen 2ur self say it's ok when a dr dies because equipments 4his treatment were locked up by nurses during nurses' strike but d dr can't go on strike becos his work is to die a senseless death from various hazards including viruses(esp as govt doesn't provide d needed protection)so the foolish masses who dnt appreciate wat dier dr does 4dem continue to live to perpetrate more foolishness! How pathetic y'al are! The dr is licensed to kill the disease, not to get killed! A word 4senseless people. I'm only hoping you are not a doctor cos you are a typical example of an agent of death! First, if the way you cut and joined your opinion is how you prescribe treatment to your patients, then only the good lord knows how many souls you've wasted. Secondly, your gross disregard and disrespect towards the masses (patient) and the nurses here is also a reflection of how you attend to them in the hospitals. As much as I understand that doctors have not gotten the best deal in Nigeria as they rightly stated, I also understand that most of you are not worth the time the FG is giving you. 2 Likes |

After reading a lot of posts here I've come to be ashamed of Nigerians. We still have a long way to go. Most of us are educated illiterates. Now the issues. . Many people say resident doctors are useless but what you do not know is that the residency training is currently the best scheme to make truly professional doctors. Resident doctors can never be compared to their counterpart medical officers in general hospitals and private hospitals. Because they undergo intensive training and their colleagues don't. The best Nigerian doctors are made through this residency training that is why going to a teaching hospital remains the best option for patients looking for medical care. If you disagree then try ask yourself why private hospitals refer tough cases to teaching hospitals. Consultants are products of residency training. They in part teach fresh doctors until they become consultants. And let me enlighten you. .. Fresh doctors know nothing. Forget about medical school. Fresh doctors cannot function without retraining and guidance from consultants so if you scrap the residency then consultants will no longer be obligated to teach fresh doctors. What will Happen will be a systematic system of trial and error diagnoses by many locum doctors thereby crippling our health sector further. Now let's take a look at some sayings that nurses work more than doctors. That's so funny and silly. While it is true that nurses probably care more for patients but nurses cannot diagnose illnesses. Their job is simply to administer drugs prescribed by doctors and ensure the patient's comfort. While it'st rue that many of them can make successful diagnosis for simple illnesses. .Do You Think they can diagnose cancer, organ failure, heart complications, bone marrow diseases, and other complicated illnesses? They cannot and will never be able to work without the direction of doctors. I do hope Mr President reverses this decision. Because if he stubbornly sticks to it then this will turn out to be his most unwise decision ever. . Even more unwise than removal of fuel subsidy. And for those of you who will bash. .I am neither a doctor nor a health practitioner. Just a concerned citizen who will lose faith in Nigerian health care if there are no resident doctors. 15 Likes |

Nuzo1:very funny!! my man, your federal govt is not worth more than a classroom full of kids with downs syndrome. in civilised societies, their doctors ARE NOT SEEN OR HEARD. they are well taken care of. in Nigeria, the leaders treat their health care givers like floormats. imagine 5,000 naira a month hazard allowance. sometimes I just wish the good lord will give us the Sodom and Gomorrah treatment so we can ALL START AFRESH. 2 Likes |

How many people said they are quacks? They are just mostly disrespectful and reeks of high level of superiority complex with gross disregard for their patients and other colleagues in the medical sector. So, by all means...let they move enmass to the UK,Us etc. There and then, they might see how professional and respectful Drs in those climes are. 3 Likes |

If you had taken time to read my opinion you just quoted, you would've realized that I made it clear that DR's are not getting the best deals in Nigeria. Hmmm.. pretty interestin discussion. Nice comments guys. I wld like to add. Pls slow down wit the insults pple, we are matured. My opinion. I feel GEJ advisers aren't doin a good job. They are lookin for a way to get back at docs so dey deceivin presido to take dis move. GEJ isn't fully aware of the implications of wha he is doin... if not that, den d president f*kin hate Nigerians. u can't suspend residency prog, dats pure insanity. Its like shuttin down Masters and PhD prog. Hw do u xpect d sector to grow! Everyone remains a Bsc Holder! Common Presido, dis isn't a smart move at all..... I suggest he call d docs, hold a round table meetin wit them and sort out tins, I'm sure d docs wld listen, dey are reasonable pple. And d strike wld b off. Simple. It took 100 days to meet wit chibok abducted girls parents, it took 6mnths to meet wit ASUU. It musnt come to dis, if u dey owe pple, u don't bully dem. U pay dem. Simple. 3 Likes |

phantom: Not always the case, at least in the Nigerian medical system. Matter of fact, most cases of superiority complex arises from a long period of dominance factored by government influence and bad policies. And how many of the DR's came out in mass? Again, stop quoting me out of context. I've always acknowledged that there are some sane, cool headed DR's in Nigeria. |

MosquitoREBIRTH: i really dont understand this news.. Who can help please? FG didt sack Strikin docs, dats not correct. Accordin to dat letter, FG sacked all residents docs. Residency is a trainin prog for doc to become specialists( consultants) it's jst like a Masters and PhD to become a Dr./prof eventually. Dis prog is sponsored by d FG, so d gov has suspended d prog and sacked all d residents. Consultants, Medical officers, house officers still hav deir jobs. There will not b shortage of staffs cos d hospitals will still hire dese sacked residents as Contract staffs for a period of 6mnths which can b renewed. Implication is : 9ja can't train a specialist anymore. Dey will all jst b MBBS holders. Xcept we import specialist from foreign countries. 2 Likes |

Hmm, so much ignorance and illiteracy here, if any body is happy with the sacking of doctors then that person should go and check his head, can a doctor ever be unemployed?, I just feel for this country and its poor populace, this our so called leaders don't even visit our hospitals, and you a poor man is happy because doctors were sacked, doctors swear an oath, its true, nurses have their oath, our leaders have their's, in all this I can proudly say doctors are amongst the few who still stick to what they swear to in the world today 3 Likes |

Nuzo1: nuzo.... you have always been a mature poster but saying most doctors are incompetent is a bare face lie! on the contrary, the little 'function' in the health sector today is BECAUSE of the doctors believe it or not. nuzo,I don't think you and many Nigerians here know how bad things have really gone in the health sector. if you knew, YOU WOULD WEEP. zero equipment and training. doctors try any which way to diagnose illnesses solely on our clinical skills. thank god,by virtue of our training,we have a pretty good idea of a diagnosis just using our clinical skills. these days medicine has advanced. machines are needed to help us give far more to our patients but your government has refused to equip the hospitals. for how long are we going to continue like this? but the more painful thing is that our people are illiterate and on top of that poor. they can't fight for themselves. this strike whether you want to believe it or not is for them and not us. out of the 24 demands, the money based demands are not more than 5. 4 Likes |

ArabianPrince: As that revocation may have saved countless of Nigerian souls, I'm of the strong opinion that the FG should still lay in wait at any international airport in Nigeria. You must pay for the lives you've wastes before you left. Meanwhile, I pity the citizens of the country you are practising in cos aside frome the fact that you are so disrespectful to your patients and coworkers, your cut and join statement and opinions here indicate danger to any patient you touch. Your current employer will soon fish you out! 1 Like |
