Good Nairalanders,

I have a fordfocus 2002 which had an overheating issue which was resolved after replacing the head gasket. However, last week i noticed that the car would go off on the highway while i am on 80km/h or 100km/h.

Also, most mornings it does not start at once and i have to crank it up to 2 times before it finally starts up. My mechanic looked at it and said i should be pouring fuel in the injector/carburator(that part it is like a rubber hose and is connected to the air filter) every morning before starting it.

Also, recently the car will start up after i have ''poured'' a little fuel in it, but will just gradually go off, sometimes i will rev the engine but it will still go off.

I need a lasting soultion to this as i await your honest advises

Check ur ignition coil.

You don't think the engine will not start if the culprit was coil pack while he was spraying in fuel manually into intake manifold through throttle body?

Patlead,

If your engine would start when you spray in fuel in intake through throttle body , but goes off once the fuel burns off, it means there is no fuel supply in that intake manifold. Meaning, your Injectors are not supplying fuel or enough. But since you said the engine would go off after secs, then there seem not to be fuel supply at all from those injectors. And what could make injectors not supply fuel or enough fuel to start a cold engine?

1. Crankshaft position sensor. I wouldn't know Ford injection and ignition system, but I do know for Peugeot, if your engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor) is faulty or failing, it will not only not produce fuel through Injectors, your spark plugs Won't spark as well, since the sensor controls both. But then you said the car would go off sometimes while engine is running. That sounds like engine speed sensor symptom as well.

2. Low fuel pressure. If your FPR (Fuel Pressure regulator ) is no longer doing its work well, the pressure won't be enough for fuel pump to get Injectors do their work. Likewise, a failing fuel pump will give weak fuel pressure as well, hence, hard start at cold engine. A weak fuel pump could stall a car in motion. Test the fuel pressure with proper tool.

3. CTS. What controls the injectors at cold start trough engine ECU in Ford Focus? Coolant temperature sensor or cold start injectors? These can cause hard start when engine is cold if they start failing or failed. But wouldn't make the engine to go off while vehicle is in motion, like you described.

sir, what are ur advises? What should I look towards. Let me add that i tried something out today. I switched on the ignition, and loosened the fuel line that goes into the engine and expected fuel to spray around but that did not happen.could it be a bad fuel pump? Or an electrical issue,?

I have already explained the fuel pump, in connection to your symptoms, in my previous post.

As for electrical issue you asked, fuel pump is also electrical. Notwithstanding, I would first check if the fuel pump get power supply when ignition is switched on. Use digital multimeter and test the fuel pump connector (positive & negative wires) to know if the pump get power supply.

So chillex 8 scanned my car and did some other trouble shooting.the code it throws up is P0193 fuel rail pressure circuit high. I have been advised to change the entire pump.car gurus, kindly throw more light that will help me in resolving the issue

Here is the answer that solves all your problem.

http://www.justanswer.com/ford/4qtd0-code-p0193-fuel-rail-pressure-sensor-circuit-high-input.html

You said the car runs, but you have to spray petrol which indicates you fuel pressure is low but if the pump is dead your car won't run at all; now your pump might be weak but since there is no fuel rail pressure gage first thing to do is change the fuel filter don't try to clean it.

The cheapest guess right now is to remove the fuel filter(it will be very dirty ) and take it to the ford part place in Lagos most fords us the same filter worst case scenario is to check Coscharis or Briscoe. then see if it drives better the last thing will be the fuel pump/regulator just in case it was going bad and weak for now.Normally your mechanic is suppose to change fuel filter as part of regular maintenance every 2 years then check the fuel pressure with a gage it should be 35-65psi which is higher than the pressure of air in your tires and if he found it lower he will change the pump/regulator .
