How does someone come to a conclusion on something except through observation? And in the case of Lord Lugard, which groups did he observe the most when it comes to his statements on Black people?

That is primary school logic although you have not provided any evidence that he observed any group the most ,the Nort is not a "group" it is made of of hundreds of ethnic groups.

Even if it was one group then the logic of your assumption would imply that he was less qualified to comment on the other group rather than anything else. I am sorry but your reasoning is juvenile. There are so many Variables to consider other than time spend. Did he spend the time fighting ,studying and observing, etc.

If I learn how to drive using a toyota and spend 140 hours and now I drive a honda which I have driven for 14 hours according to your logic I know more about Toyotas than Hondas. Actually the reverse may be true because I may have better understanding of cars now and a better framework for studying cars now allowing me to do a better job much quicker. Anyway you have failed to provide evidenc e for your claim that he spent more time in the North which if true proves NOTHING

A simple read of his biography at Wikipedia is all you need to know about his whereabouts in Africa:

*shaking my head at all the coons who think Frederick Lugard's words were correct and that Nigeria's current state proves he was right*

We really need to start teaching Nigerians the dynamics of development and underdevelopment in school.

Relax man, be civil a bit. All the history and all that we all know it. young man you see, the current state of blacks is it still history making our leaders worthless, corrupt, mismanageful, reckless, nonchalant, cynical?

I'm the least person you going to talk about super-inferior-complex too, forget it was racially uttered, are we not justifying him? The act of xenophobe in SA does it not do justice to it? Youruba-igbo ethno-rift is it not doing justice to it? Hausa-fulani vs middle belts is it not justifying it?

Do you need a seer to see all this? Is lugard still controlling you and me? Blame our leaders for our caveman, crass mentality and under-development, nigeria as a country had the biggest resources after this white heads left.

Bro the key to africa lies in our skin color, all we have to do is seek our inner part to radiate our black beauty rather than looking for shortcut thereby bleaching it.

You are who you are not what they want you to be.
Give me one good reason why I should engage you? Because you are just confused here.

See ehen, the translations are more difficult to understand. Prof Wole Soyinka translated 2 out of those books and the English he used was not from here at all. Another prof named Olu Obafemi translated the other two.
The translations are just bland they are not as interesting as the Yoruba version itself.

I'm surprised you could make that derogatory statement. Your opinion is highly fallacious and illogical. Beyond 20th century and up to this present moment, Africans have continued to make unprecedented achievements in our history and these great feats have constantly falsified that claim by Lord Lugard.

African States are only greatly hampered by the problems of corruption, leadership,......Given the necessary and conducive environments, Nigerians, and indeed Africans, can stand toe to toe with people in other continents of the globe. This has been always confirmed when one hears success stories of brilliant Nigerian students who excelled remarkably in foreign universities. There are also several Nigerian intellectuals/scientists who have made some wonderful inventions/contributions to knowledge, notable among them are Philip Emagweli (Father of Internet), Wole Soyinka, Niyi Osundare, just to mention a few; these people and several others could perform these epoch-making feats because of the enabling environment they found themselves in.
Don't mind the "Uncle Tom",I wonder if Hitler,Stanlin,Mussolini are Africans,if Jack the Ripper,Son of Sam etc are Nigerians.

If you wanIt us(North) to be part of this Nigeria you have in mind, then we want 50% of the membership of the Nat'l Assembly-Ahmadu Bello,1952

North and their born-to-rule mentality started right before we got our independence.
It is even more painful to note that North was the most underdeveloped and poorest of the country.. this was the reason why independence was delayed until 1960 for them to come up a bit! They contribute little to the Nation export and income but recieves the highest of allocation and seats, yet they even have the impetus to be causing destruction every day in the name of religion. Its high time they realize that being part of Nigeria is a favour to them and not a right as they claim, wanting to be in charge... mtcheeeew!!!!

The Typical African...his mind is far nearer to the animal world than that of the European or Asiatic...-Lord Lugard(1926)NG,Gov-Gen 1913-18

Words on the marble. Though harsh, but painfully true. 89 years after Lord Lugard made this infamous statement, the stark reality staring at us proves him right. Africans are still backward till this age. Our hatred for our fellow race is the bane of our existence. sad sad sad if you want to doubt him, take a look at the current cesspit Nigeria is in.

Those arrogant comments attributed to Luggard are the words of a white-man not god and not etched in stone as if facts for all time. They are the words of biased and racist White man looking at some Africans and judging their acts, thoughts and modes of behavior through the eyes of prejudice and contempt. I can tell you now that for every one of his famous comments and quotes, i can rephrase them in a positive way just as me, a Nigerian, can rephrase everyone of his positive comments on Whitemen and Asians negatively. It is all a mater of perspective and not objective nothing more.

I'll give you and example:

When some native Indians of South America saw an airplane fly across the sky for the first time, they didn't run or hide. When the white anthropologists asked them what they had seen, the Indians said they saw metal birds. Later the whites marveled and compered the Indians favorably to the Africans. The whites said that the Indians showed a remarkable maturity and composure unlike the Africans that, cried Iron-birds, ran and hid, bawling to their gods for help when they first saw an aircraft. The Whites shook their heads and commented that without doubt every native that they had come across showed superiority to the African natives.

Later, when these White anthropologists returned to America and this experience happened to crop up, during a dinner with a professor of physics. The professor of physics marveled at the Africans and called their reactions superior to that of the Native American Indians. The Professor said that the Africans were more perceptive and aware of the true nature of things; their reaction showed that they recognized the marvel that was an aircraft while the native South American Indians had not.

The morale of the tale illustrates perspectives. Lugard chose to see the Africans in that condescending light. If he had wanted to, he could paint the African in a different way. The Africans bravery could be true bravery instead of childlike bravery; the African work ethics could have been seen as honest and principled in place of Lugard's rant that they chose to work for nothing or whatever it was that Lugard is quoted as having stated.
....................................................................................

The irony of Lugard was that although much of what he stated was rubbish, his words come nearest to making sense in regards to the rest of Africa not Nigeria. wink
