Exactly my point
If the aworis, eguns, egbas, ijebus from the SW; ikwerres, ndokwas, agbors etc from SS can claim to be among the over 300 ethnic groups in Nigeria, I see no reason why the ilajes shouldn't be called an ethnic group

Of course these can all be said to be ethnic groups of their own but they are still yoruba (excluding Egun)

Nd for the Ikwere, Ika etc they are still igbo

Nigeria is just messed up. ..kids are taught to hate everybody as parents always seem to have horrible things to say about other groups

I ave noticed that the Ilaje, Owo, Ikale and to certain extents, the Idanre, Ondo and Ekiti dialects are infacts very very similar.
with Ilaje-Owo being most similar even though miles apart.

* These dialects have the presence of the fricatives
"Gh"...... which has been condensed to just 'W" in standard Yoruba
"Gw", "Kh",

* Words beginning with "U" which in standard yoruba would be an "I" like:
Ule - Ile, Isu - Usu, Use - Ise, Ugbo - Igbo, Etc

* Use variants of Dede, Kete and Gede to refer to an entirety ... like
Aghan oma Ilaje Dede (All the Ilaje children) , Oma Ekiti Kete (All Ekiti children) , Oma Ogho gede (All Owo children) Etc

* All have slower and more "melancholic" / "melodic" forms or kinds of music which involves a slow chanting, and calculated step orientated movement like the Binis-- with rhythmic swaying of the body from side to side, and graceful leg movements.

It is said that these South-Eastern dialects, are the most original form of Yoruba.... not the Oyo influenced generality that we all speak today.

And Et cettera.

Quite right, There's a pattern - Itsekiri - Ijebu/Ilaje - Owo - Ondo/Ekiti

Ekiti however don't have the Bini-like melody
Re: The ILAJE People Of Ondo State(history, Fact, Culture) by ibbobla(m): 11:08pm On May 22, 2017

@ d bolded The Ilaje's use Oma ilaje Dede
y I use Omi Iwerre Dede. Can u see d similarities ?

can u see d big difference b/w Dede and Keke used by ilaje and Ekiti People ?

This was wat am explaining earlier tat u guys keep tagging me Igbo boy.. d Ilaje dialect is entirely diff from most Yoruba language

What do the people of Ondo city use?
Answer... dede. Does that make us different from the Yoruba ethnic group? In fact, all dialects spoken in Ondo state, differ from the conventional Yoruba language. I also believe it's same with the Igbo language spoken in the S/E. I can understand an Ilaje man as he too can, even though there could be slight modifications. The closest to the Ondo dialect, spoken by Ile Oluji and Idanre, has some variations.

An hallmark of the Ekimogun people of Ondo kingdom/city, but still doesn't make us Benin. I've observed closely, the dress sense if these two sides, but hardly note the difference. The rhythmic movement, unarguably similar if not same.

Yes, the Ugbo are one of the aborigines of Ile Ife. You also have the Owu and Anioma Igbo (Ugbodu, Onicha Ugbo, etc.,) peoples among others too. According to Olowu, there are even Manu Owu communities in Igbo land, South Eastern Nigeria today. Igbos don't deny this, and it is because they afe the ones Oduduwa met in Ile Ife, the great kingdom of Ugbo of the Ilajes incuded.

Below is an excerpt of what Olowu said, which we believe is true:
"We are the Jews of the Yoruba race. We have Owu Obaloyin in Kwara so also Owu Isin. Aregbesola ( Osun state governor) was even telling me recently that he and a professor have discovered some Owus in the East. We are making efforts to meet these people.' Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/there-are-owu-communities-in-south-east-olowu/

Ile(House) - Yoruba/ Ule - ilaje
Gbogbo(everything) - Yoruba/ de de(not related to dede which is a name) - ilaje
Iyara(Room) - Yoruba/ kurudu - ilaje

I was suprised when my dad told me that the chieftancy title of our family (Ijan Ekiti) 'Oshogbon' has a Bini root, even Ologbosere and other titles of bini roots are also given in some families. The influence of Bini can't be denied in Ekiti culture and traditions.

I'm pretty sure those are Ondo dancers from Owo. They were probably invited for the coronation.

having listened carefully and heard 'gede' i believe that too, but both dialects of Owo and ekiti bear a closer resemblance than other ondo dialects to ekiti.

Of course Ijan ekiti was at a time under Bini in the early 1800s so such titles are possible
But the Bini influence on any Ekiti town including Ikere(with an Oba of Bini origin) is not of significant amount

that is from Usi
And Usi was under Ido, which was at a time under Oyo. Bini influence over this area is almost non-existent
These dancers could be from Owo as 9jakool suggested

Yeah, I could immediately tell based on the dialect, dance, attire, and instruments/music. Ekiti does not have Bini like melody. Relationship with Bini isn't as strong in Ekiti as it is in Ondo. Bini's encroachment into Ekiti is only limited to certain ares in Ekiti. Ekiti towns like Otun, Ido, Iye, Efon-Alaye, Iloro, Okemesi, Oye, Ikole, and Omuo didn't have much to do with Bini.

I don’t know if it is the so called “Benin melody”
Buy Ekiti music actually shares that exact type of rhythm

On the other end of the spectrum are the Oyos with their heavy talking drums, bata and stuff.

you are right,
i believe the influence is more with Ado and it's off shoot towns which my home town Ijan is part of, when we were growing we had this neighbour from Owo, my dad and their own dad communicated freely in each other's dialect. Then i got to know many words shared in common in our own ekiti dialect and owo like 'luka luka' or 'luka' which means daada in Yoruba, 'Fo'-- speak
Just like you said the influence does not cover every part of Ekiti and even the Ekiti dialects are deeper from one axis to the other, while some could be easily likened to say Owo, Idanre, Akure dialects some are close to Ijesha, Igbomina etc.

that is what i am trying to say too,
i remember in '91 when we went for our Grand dad's funeral,
i was almost lost, i barely connected to the culture i saw,
but since then, though i was still young i started getting curious about Ekiti,
There was this drum in which the pattern of beating is not Yoruba at all, i remember my Dad saying they were ancient and the skins were human,
even the music pattern and rhythm sound strange, especially the traditional ritualistic type.
i cant count number of times when people ask after seeing my surname 'osatuyi' if i am Edo.
i really love to know more on the past with Ondo and Ekiti.
i want to believe poeple have been existing in these areas before waves of Ile Ife people came to mingle and mix up the tradition of the earlier aborigines of the place.

what ayyoshert calls 'Osa' is probably what we call 'Isa' in other Ekiti dialects. It is an ancient Ekiti deity

Many old settlements and Family names in Ekiti come with Isa prefixes, Including the area where my Family houses and farmland are

then the 'tuyi' is also typical yoruba.. there are names like Oguntuyi, Osuntuyi, Fatuyi

------------
People like you are a menace to humanity at large. Everything is not about your own ethnicity, more so a small minority like yours.
rather than going about nairaland doing 'edo service' or 'edo defender' that does not pay Edo nation in any way, why not show your true love for Edo by helping your brothers and sisters out so they wont be going to europe through Libya.this sort of Ethnic bigotry doesn't help you, it destroys you

i did ethnography of nigeria and got to find out that some family migrated from benin to ondo which was been observed in the family greeting of the benins ....
in benin every family has a greeting to identify is own family when it got to some family they stated those family migrated to ondo ,ekiti etc and also a well know fact that these kingdom was under the benin influence before precolonisation

The "we be plenty confused"/yoruba will always have sleepless nights about Edo.
Please can someone locate the bight of yoruba for me, or the bight of ife or the bight of oyo ?
So "we be plenty confused"/yoruba no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to sufficiently rewrite history in order to delivers Edo heritage to you and your ife willage.
The Capital of most of west Africa will always be Benin City, not your ife.

I don't actually know what Benin melody is too. cheesy I'm not that familiar with traditional Edo music. I'm just assuming he's referring to the rhythm given off by the drum beats accompanied by the slow paced dancing, which just seems like one form of Yoruba music/dance. After all, traditional Yoruba instruments like agogo is used in Benin music.

Actually, the talking drum is also used in traditional music in many parts of Ondo. They are traditionally used in kunbe music. Not all of the music from the region fall into the stereotyped "Benin melody" theme. I've seen quite a heavy usage of gangan during Obitun. I feel like what you have is more of a diverse music tradition.
