Thanks for d enlightenment, what I have to say due to my experience,u must make Ur bible Ur standard I.e everything God commanded u must do it and your desire for any spiritual gifts must be strong,(d Bible says these things can not manifest(speaking in tongues,healing,prophesying)I.e filled with HOLY GHOST except through prayer and fasting(Mark 9:29)

You don`t just wake up and start to pray for the gift of speaking in tongues the reason for the gift of the Holy Ghost for the speaking is tongue as Jesus put that ``And Ye shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon You and TAKE NOTE ye shall be my witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the rest of the world.....
So if You know you are not ready to work for God don`t bother yourself except heaven choose you......

For me the real factors are knowledge and hunger.

This inspired me years back....someone came for holy ghost Baptism in my church, the ministering Pastor told him to wait for some minutes as he was busy teaching some other "new converts "
The guy waited for some minutes, the Pastor was late in coming and went back to remind the pastor that he was still waiting for him and the pastor pleaded for few minutes more
Finally the pastor was through with his assignment went to meet the Guy for the Baptism as he opened the Door low and behold the Guy was "blasting" In tongues even without been prayed for or laid hands on.

That simply means he was realy hungry for it and in the process encountered God by HIMSELF!

speaking in tongue in itself is a gift to speak mysteries(what no one knows) in other men's language(could be hebrew,greek, hausa etc)...speaking in tongue means the spirit talking deep secrets through you in men's language. Now, its better to speak and interprete that the church may be edified...you speak whats about to happen, you speak God's immediate or future intentions to man...that is what tongue does.it synchronizes you to the spirit...it aligns you to the spirit...it guides you to do things right.

Speaking in tongues is 1 of the gifts of the holyspirit, we have different types of gift according to the book of (1 chor 12), some of this tongues speakers has mislead so many christians due to their speaking in tongues, can u imagine someone told me that the holy spirit dwells in me but have nt been baptized by the holyspirit just because i don't have the gift of speaking in tongues. Can u imagine that? If u have the gift of speaking in tongues just meditate on this chapter(1 chor 14) dont condem and mislead those who cant speak in tongues. I function will all the utterance Gifts effectively.

I have functioned with word of Knowledge a few times.

I have not demonstrated word of wisdom and discerning of Spirits before.

I have demonstrated the gift of faith too.
I have healed the sick a few times.
I have never worked any miracle.

It is the first demonstration of Spirit.
It is the most dominant sign that comes with the infilling of the Holy Ghost.

It is a wonderful gift and it makes your Christian journey way easier

But it is not a criteria for getting to heaven.

A Christian who doesn't speak in tongues but is bornagain and lives in righteousness will make heaven and have many crowns depending on how well he or she evangelized

Meanwhile the tongue speaking brother or sister whose life didn't please God will enjoy a VIP ticket to hell.

LoooL when I was catholic and didn't believe in tongues I spoke like you doing. The Holy Spirit is the mark of sonship. No one with that mark can go to hell. it is THE criteria,cos He is The Spirit of Christ Himself that joins to our spirit to cry out Abba Father when we have received Christ as our Lord and saviour.

To your question, yes - speaking in tongues is the only sign that scriptures state that we are spirit filled. Now, the gift of speaking with diverse tongues is different from the sign of being spirit filled.
