Reason? you put word in her mouth. That is a legal cum moral offence smiley

I didn't. I only examined her intent as she did mine in my post.

In any case, people must disagree to agree. Its just a part of our warped human nature. smiley

It does! Just stop with the argument k. Both groups borrowed things from each other, but both have also managed to carve out their own unique looks.
@tonychristopher, you are right about the famous akwete. In all, I love Igbo dressing 'cus it's just so regal and beautiful.

fratermathy:

That is the point, I never insulted the Igbo nation. Saying that their dressing/traditional system were modelled after the Edo system does not relegate their culture. It is an academic fact that the Edo empire had overarching influence in the whole of Southern Nigeria.

Absolutely! ...and also take corrections and learn, like I did myself. There's something I learnt which I didn't know before.

Thanks for the beautiful thread anyways. smiley

I admire your perseverance. I still stand my ground. Although, I'll acknowledge at this point that my earlier statement that Igbo system of leadership and dressing draws from Edo system maybe hyperbolic. Nonetheless, minute traces are there!

Now you are talking nobody is denying the traces but when you said copied ...thats offensive and if you know Igbo well ...we gaurd our history and culture

I think we will be good friends

Your intelligent.. Few of your type is found in nairaland ....I must say

Every culture borrow French borrow from English Germany from Switzerland

Hmm, you people should take it easy on the OP, he made a mistake.
OP, simply correct the mistake, and let all parties move on.

On topic. Igbo have no single pattern of dressing. The Igbo ethnic group is made up of different tribes, and each of this tribes dress distinctively, such that it's impossible to bring out a single picture and say that that's how Igbos dress.

That picture you used to represent Igbo dressing in this thread, doesn't reflect the way most Anambra groups dress, neither does it represent how the Anioma's who wear "Akwa Ocha" dress. That your Igbo dressing picture( the Nonso diobu pic) looks like more of Ohafia/ Abriba/Bende/ Ngwa/ Aro/ Ndoki/Asa axis of Igboland dress.

we use beads also on our head, ankles and waist. It's popularly known as jigida hope am correct.

We as well tie 2 wrappers known as Hollanndis and scarf to go with. Don't have pictures to butress my point but your first pics and that of op says it all.

My original handle was barred and my reply to you hidden, for reasons best known to the moderator.

You are right.
We tie two wrappers, unlike SW groups.
We use beads to adorn our hair or as a headband, ankle beads and jigida- waist beads.
We also have temporary colourful face and body tatoos done for occasions - uli.

Esans didn't adopt anything from Ika so just stop your ignorant claims. And I don't consider the Igbo coral beads to be similar to Edo.. there's always a weak, insecure group of Igbos ruining cultural threads. It's getting real annoying.
God bless you. These igbos are a disease.

Shut your damn mouth. So igbos should keep quiet when they are being misrepresented on nairaland? Some people lack thinking faculty!

Biko all I want to correct is the false impression that head-tie which we Ndi Igbo call ichafu, is a yoruba creation. Yorubas have always been known for their aso-oke and not ichafu. The fact that yoruba women now tie ichafu which they call 'gele,' does not in any way make it a yoruba creation or part of the ancient yoruba culture. Also the yorubas certainly don't own the music industry. I don't know where the OP got such silly notion from.
@OP, instead of indulging in this unnecessary argument, don't you think it will be better for you to make the appropriate correction in your write up? Simply describe the Igbo culture without likening it to that of the Benin people, in order not to insult the sensibility of the great and unique Igbo nation. That is certainly not too much to ask is it?
Nobody invented headtie. Yorubas have their aso oke gele. Igbos have their ichafu. The silk gele or ichafu is imported from india and China and is mostly asociated with none yoruba groups. Years ago, Yoruba and Hausa ladies wouldn't touch the imported headtie not to talk of using it. These assumptions irritate me. O di egwu.

Yes, Mike Ezuruonye is from the Old Bende,so he dresses like them when he wants to go traditional. Being a star actor,am sure he is given the leverage to inject his style in his wardrobe. That being said, his attire does not necessarily reflect how all Igbos dress but how modern Igbos dress with the isi agu shirt, trouser and wollen cap which is substituted with red cap around the Anambra axis( without the Bende belt of course).

Other than that, throwing over a simple wrapper whether akwa ocha or george whether over the shoulder or on the waist still stands for all Igbos as the may be. As for the women, both single and double wrapper are used. If we reached back into the past, you would understand that 'Igbo fashion' was much more flamboyant and uniform than what is presented today.
So to say that Igbo dressing is modelled after Edo is a great fallacy.
