If his definition of "open" is different, I see no problems here. Perhaps the only problem would be his inability to use a dictionary.

Yep, he does know, either:

Single
In a relationship
Open relationship
Married
Engaged
Divorced
etc etc

There isn't a problem if he doesn't see the 'open' relationship as she defines it, (having sexual relations in/out of their relationship), if he doesn't do that or agree with that then there isn't an issue, but it does look kinda annoying when you look at it and you know others will see it too, as I myself define 'open' relationship as she does and so do many others I know.

This can only be an issue if the boy is better off than the girl in all terms. . . What stops her from changing her own relationship status?

Every man is entitled to his opinion. How he chooses to define his ''open relationship'' is subject to his own mindset. If he reasons outside the box, hey, who cares?? Not every stereotypical definition which bothers on human emotions and feelings should be accepted.

Single means u r or have been in the relationship market for a while - probably searching for something in particular. A hunter will percieve this to mean he/she may or may not fit the bill - some will try their luck, others will free the move
