Have you read any of the Sherlock Holmes stories? the famous fictional British Detective created by author Conan doyle, How do you view the deductive methods used by holmes in unravelling mysteries and solving crime? Which of his stories do you like best
I accidentally came across The Hound Of the baskervilles In my university Library two years ago and since then i became an addict fan of sherlock holmes. I downloaded all the conan doyle's series and devoured them!
If you are a fan like me, then this is your thread, post all your enquiries, comments and memories here. Lets talk,

Sherlock Holmes is a masterpiece. I came across a dog-eared copy in my university library, and fell to devouring it.

A book like Sherlock Holmes always tickles one's deductive powers. A man looks at you in one retrospective  fashion and tells you your life history. I read somewhere that Conan Doyle used Holmes' methods to salvage the name of a man accused of a heinous crime. I can't now remember the man's nationality-he was a foreigner- but Doyle helped proved the man's innocence.Oh by the way, Conan Doyle is the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Both have often been conflated in the past. Just to tell you Holmes' fame.

I can't exactly tell which of the Holmes' series I like best(Study in the Scarlet, Hound of the Baskervilles, etc etc). But that series in which he was ressurected, to my mind, was superb. You know, Doyle killed off Holmes, and the public pressurised him to ressurect the detective. When Doyle killed off the character of Holmes, Doyle forgot an elementary requirement: witnesses("Elementary my dear Watson!).Holmes died without a witness.Hence, his easy resurrection.

HERE'S MY ALL TIME FAVOURITES

The Hoiund of the Baskervilles ( Sherlock holmes solves the myth of the diabolical hound after Sir Henry's life)

The Red Headed league ( I find this very amusing! A newspaper advertisement for Employment for a man with red hair turns into a bank armed robbery)

The Musgrave Rituals ( Sherlock holmes at his best! He uncovers the meaning of an old time family ritual)

The adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton ( S. H & Dr Watson burgles a house)

The final problem ( S.H dies alongside with his arch enemy Prof Moriaty)

The Adventure of the empty house ( S. H comes back to life, solving a murder case)

The adventure of the dancing men ( One of my favorites, S. H interpretes the meaning of a series of coded symbols with dangerous consequences)

The valley of fear ( a classic, The valley of fear indeed where the scrowlers and body masters hold sway)

The Adventure of the cardboard box ( Miss Susan Cushing receives a gift of two severed human ears packed in a cardboard)

The adventure of the dying detective ( Sherlock Holmes is seriously ill)

The sign of four

Hailings fellows, was introduced to sherlock homes say like 1994, but did not really appreciate him till like 1999. Then i was in d uni and we were on strike i used to go to the library to read them, i read all of them except the valley of fear. But in 2007, i got the complete books of Sherlock holmes. I love that guy, inshort i try to model myself like him. Love you all.

In my last post I did say that Conan Doyle helped a foreigner salvage his name from a crime he was alleged to have committed. I can now confirm that he was an Indian and a legal practitioner.

Iniguy, that's quite an impressive list you got there. I should say that your list contains most of the Holmes stories. The copy I read in my university was an omnibus collection, having all or most of the stories. Do you mark Doyle's circumstantial narration of events? I get put off atimes by such circumstantial description. Thomas Hardy is also culpable. Dickens used this device too, but his knack for humuor often makes his books wonderful. Doyle succeeds in Holmes and the cool clinical expression gives the Holmes' series a lovable garb.

Don't you think it would be wonderful for not just our detectives(unlike the Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade) to copy Holmes' deductive methods, but also our lawyers, judges, psychologists etc. to imitate his distinguishing trait?

By the way, have you read The Three Garridebs, another of the Holmes' series? I came across its drama rendition by an American dramatist. Very impressive this one, like all others.

ojesymsym(O.J Simpsom?), good for you to adopt Holmes' deductive methods, which, incidentally, your namesake used during his murder trial. Holmes' methods saved him from the electric chair.

~Oh What memories! 221B Baker Street! We he had a collection of Penguin hard backs Sherlock Homes books in our library when i was growing up . . .i enjoyed reading the books. . .i cudnt possibly name a favourite!!

~I would like to think if i havent read all the Shelock Holmes books,i have pretty much seen all the series. . .i was that much an avid Fan of the Character!Looking forward to see the New Movie Directed By Guy Ritchie w/ Robert Downing Jr. as Holmes

~I think of Sherlock Holmes & the Actor Jeremy Brett who played the character in the 1984-1994 Series "The Adventures Of Shelock Holmes" ~ "The Return Of Shelock Holmes" ~ "The Casebook Of Shelock Holmes" & "The Memoirs Of Shelock Holmes" pops into my head! There was just something about his mannerism . .the way he portrayed the character. . . it was nothing like my imagination reading the books!!

Re: Sherlock Holmes Fan Thread by dumodust(m): 11:45am On Sep 04, 2009
whoever created this thread deserves to be hugged. sir conan doyle is the greatest writer alive to me, to have created sherlock holmes. i have read everything- hound of baskervilles, casebook(collection), memoirs(collection), and even those written by other authors with the franchise. he had a brother, mycroft holmes who had greater detective powers but was less active than sherlock, works in the foreign ministry- he was featured in most of his stories but more prominenet in a book wriiten by another writer- ' enter the lion'. i have also read 'young sherlock holmes', an attempt at creating his earlier life and the beginnnings with his enemy/archrival- professor moriarty.

i almost believed that he was real as a teenager when my father bought the casebook and memoirs for me. after all is said and done, we find that all his methods were 'elementary' as he would always say, 'elementary my dear watson, elementary"

*forgive my long text, i'm a gushing fan!

Sherlock Holmes is so phenomenal that Arthur Conan Doyle seems insignificant. It's as if he exists by himself. ACD like Roald Dahl suffer the fate of too grand an imagination that brings their characters more fame than they. Frankly, I dunno how many Sherlock Holmes adventures I've read.

WHOA!
NEVER BEEN TO THIS BOARD OF NL AND I AM SURPRISED AND PLEASED AT WHAT I SEE!
ITS NICE TO KNOW THERE ARE HOLMES FANS HERE IN NL!
LOVED SIR CONAN'S GREATEST WORK SINCE I CAME ACROSS THE 'HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
WHEN I WAS TEN.
I BELIEVE ITS THE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR MANY DETECTIVE NOVELS AND MOVIES ALL
OVER THE WORLD. HOLMES METHODS ARE UNIQUE AND INCREDIBLY INTERESTING.

WHAT DOES ANYONE THINK OF THE MOVIE WHERE ROBERT D. JUNIOR AND JUDE LAW PLAY HOLMES
AND WATSON.
I KINDA LIKE THE MOVIE FOR MANY THINGS.
FIRST THE MOVIE'S MAIN ACTOR STIRS AWAY A BIT FROM THE BOOKS' MAIN CHARACTER IN THE
SENSE THAT MOVIE HOLMES IS SHORTER THAN BOOK HOLMES, AND STOCKY AND MUCH MORE MUSCULAR
THAN BOOK HOLMES. BUT I LIKE THE DEPTH OF ROBERT'S HOLMES. HE PLAYS THE MANNERISM OF
THE BOOK HOLMES SO WELL. I LIKE THE PART IN THE MOVIE WHERE HE SPRAWLS ON THE FLOOR
OF HIS BEDROOM LIKE A MAD MAN WITH HAGGLED HAIR WAITING FOR A CASE TO COME!
BOOK HOLMES OFTEN COMPLAINED OF THE BORING INTERVALS BETWEEN CASES WHERE HIS GREAT
MIND WOULD BE LEFT RUNNING WITH NO CASE GRIND AT , AND THE EFFECT WORE HIM OUT PSYCHOLOGICALLY.
THE READER WOULD FEEL SORRY FOR HIM AT THESE MOMENTS. GUESS, THAT'S WHAT CAUSED HIS ADDICTION TO
COCAINE!
I LIKE THAT MOVIE HOLMES CAN ENGAGE IN FIST FIGHTS MORE OFTEN THAN THE BOOK HOLMES.
THIS DOES NOT DEVIATE FORM THE BOOK AS HOLMES IS QUOTED IN ONE OF THE BOOK SERIES, (I
THINK IT WAS ' A STUDY IN SCARLET ' ), 'THAT AS A YOUNG MAN, I TOOK TO THE RINGS, ' AND JUDE LAW'S
WATSON SHOULD ENGAGE IN ARM FIGHTS BEING A FORMER MILITARY MAN HIMSELF.
MOVIE HOLMES CALCULATION OF FIGHTING MOVES BEFORE THE FIGHT I THOUGHT WAS TOTALLY COOL! ITS WAS LIKE
USING THE LAW OF PHYSICS AND BODY ANATOMY TO PREDICT AND ENGAGE IN COMBAT!

THE FACT THAT WE GET TO KNOW TOWARDS THE END OF THE MOVIE THAT THE MYSTERIOUS MAN IN THE COACH
WAS HIS ARCH NEMESIS AND ENEMY, PROFESSOR MORIARTY, AND THAT WE NEVER GET TO SEE THE
PROFESSOR'S FACE BUT KNOW FROM HINTS FORM THE ENDING SCENE( WHERE THE LADY WARNED HIM THE HE WAS MORE
DANGEROUS THAT HOLMES THOUGHT, AND HE JUST ANSWERED WITH A SHRUG OF THE SHOULDERS - AND I
AM LIKE I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIM SQUARE OFF WITH THE PROFESSOR IN PART TWO! )

ALL IN ALL I LOVED THE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY ROBERT AND JUDE. THEY ARE FUN TO WATCH, EVEN
FOR SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A FAN OF THE BOOK. I WAS SO IMPRESSED BY ROBERT'S PERFORMANCE, THAT
I FORGAVE HIM FOR NOT BEING SIX FOOT TALL WITH AN ATHLETIC FRAME.

HAS ANY ONE WATCHED MONK, A SERIES MOVIE? MONKS METHODS OF DETECTION ARE SO SIMILAR TO
HOLMES THAT I AM TEMPTED TO THINK THAT MONK IS A MODERN DAY VERSION OF HOLMES. THEY JUST
TWIST THE CHARACTERS BUT ALL IN ALL THEIR ROLES ARE BASICALLY THE SAME. ANY ONE SHARE
MY THOUGHTS ON THAT?

HOWEVER, IS THERE A MODERN DAY SERIES SHOW THAT ACTUALLY PLAYS THE HOLMES CHARACTER
LIKE LOST, 24, ER ETC ? I WISH THERE WAS, WITH A NAME LIKE 'THE BAKER STREET MYSTERIES'
SO ONLY HOLMES FANS WILL KNOW WHATZ UP!
