IT was ecstacy at the Tafawa Balewa Square last Sunday when as part of its corporate social responsibility, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye handed a cheque of N50 million to the endow a professorial chair at the University of Lagos.

Speaking in a brief ceremony before his main message to mark the grand finale of the second annual RCCG Apapa Family Reunion, the pastor hinted that the gesture is one in a series of such gestures in the nation’s tertiary institutions in the country.

Dressed in a milk coloured stripped French suit, the erstwhile mathematics teacher told the mammoth crowd of worshippers that he was highly indepted to the University of Lagos for several reasons.
Speaking before the presentation of the cheque to representatives of the vice chancellor at the spiritual gathering, Pastor Adeboye said: “University of Lagos means a lot to me. By the grace of God I am the first MSc graduate of the Department of Mathematics.”

Continuing amidst huge applause from the crowd of worshippers, he said: “Also, by the grace of God I am the first Ph.D Mathematics of that school. It was at the University of Lagos that I started my teaching career in the university.

“But, far far more important than that, it was while I was at the University of Lagos that I got born again. So, I owe a lot to the university. When the idea of establishing professorial chairs came up, I said we would start with the University of Lagos.

“So, could you please help me to pass this the vice chancellor. Inside it is a cheque for N50 million,” he added while handing over a white envelope to the representative of the VC.

In response, the ecstatic representative of the vice chancellor, Mrs. A.B. Awere said amidst tears of joy: “To the glory of the Lord, we are here, in the presence of our God and the saints. Daddy, I just want to appreciate what the Lord is doing in your life, in the life of Mummy and in this ministry. We are amazed and we thank you sir, for this gift. By the grace of God, the University of Lagos will continue to excel. The Lord will uphold you. He will reward you and promote you and your ministry. He will guide you. You will be like the tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth your fruit in due season. You will not wither. Whatever you lay hand on will prosper. The purpose of God in your life and in your ministry will be fulfilled in the name of Jesus.

Our colleagues here, said we should sing a song to the glory of God. We may not sing very well, “To God be the glory, great things He had done . . . ”

Pastor Adeboye, during his sermon for the day, narrated an incident that took place at the University of Lagos that lead to his admission to the school to complete his academic pursuit after the Nigerian Civil War truncated his dream at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

. . . I’m stronger now than when I was 50 years old

GENERAL Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, 67, may soon attract some criticisms from fellow scientists when he declared last Sunday that he is stronger now than what he was 17 years ago.

Scientists all over the world, an elite group that Pastor Adeboye belongs, tend to agree that as a man grows older, he becomes weaker and weaker, but the revered man of God, who is currently leading other eminent Nigerians on the Vanguard/Silverbird Five Greatest Living Legends, told a crowd of worshippers at the Tafawa Balewa Square last Sunday that he is stronger now than he was when he was 50 years old.

There is a popular saying that women and wine get better with age. But do men also get stronger with age? According to medical research, from birth all the way to death, our bodies are constantly changing. “Let’s take a look at what happens as we age. When you have a normally functioning pituitary gland, human growth hormone (HGH) contributes to these processes.

“When man gets to his 30s and early 40s, the level of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) in our bodies begins to decline. Our metabolism slows, causing the “middle-aged spread” that so many people try to avoid. Between the ages of 40 and 65, we see our muscle strength decline, along with our vision and hearing. Our late 50s to early 60s may bring some cognitive decay as well.

“Moving into our late 60s and beyond, our skin becomes less elastic. Our joints and bones may become brittle. Medical conditions like heart disease or cancer become more likely as our bodies are unable to repair themselves the way they used to. At this point, the levels of HGH in our bodies are only one-fifth or less of what they were during youth,” says the research.

*The “Science” of mankind is what men “observe”, but it is only true science if it lines up with the Word of God. God has designed this world to “confound the wisdom of the wise” - “that no flesh should glory in His presence”, I Corinthians 1:19-29. Man can write down what they observe perfectly correct, and continually come to the wrong conclusions.

In Psalm 119:97-100, David said: “O how love I thy law! it (is) my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they (are) ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies (are) my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

Casinos don't promise you divine wealth, health and success from a man in the clouds. Doing so constitutes fraud.

Unfortunately the money meant to glorify God is being mis-appropriated and being used to glorify man instead.
