Mohawk, sorry for distracting your thread.

I will contribute with a related story. I listen to reggae, mostly from the 70's, and it seems there are two common stories for reggae stars of those times. Some of them are broke, piss broke, now. The others are dead, as you know Jamaica is said to be the homicide capital of the world. This is a website that talks about dead reggae stars.

But for everyone who made a lovely song, there is a reward waiting. No moaning for those in better places.

There used to be a guy in the 1980s who had a music video they used to show on Naija TV Stations. The song went something like

"Belinda e eeeeee ,  Belinda. Oh oh Belinda"

His style was very similar to Michael Jackson, in fact people wanted to know if he was MJ's younger brother. If you remember this guy, I'll appreciate if you can tell me his name. I believe he was a black american (not sure though)

~Majek Fashek

African reggae star Majek Fashek born: Majekodunmi Fasheke first gained national fame on a television show in the early 1980s, then toured for many years with The Mandators and attracted international attention. In 1987, he began a solo career and quickly became the biggest reggae singer in the country when his self-penned tune, "Send Down The Rain," seemed to coax a rain storm that ended one of the worst draughts in Nigeria' s history.Since that momentous occasion, Fashek has become one of Africa's most revered contemporary musical performers, rivaling compatriots Alpha Blondy and Lucky Dube in recognition and popularity around the world.

Labled a "prophet" and a "Peot", Fashek went on to become one of Africa's greatest reggae-influenced performers with his powerful world beat. His debut solo album, "Prisoner Of Conscience", released in 1988, sold more than 200,000 copies in Nigeria alone. It was followed by "Spirit of Love" a year later. The Best of Majek Fashek was released in the UK in 1994, incorporating much of Majek’s classic African material, and in 1997 Rainmaker was released on Tuff Gong International.

Born in Benin City, once the center of the ancient Sini kingdom, Fashek inherited his love of music from his mother, an Edo woman who raised him following the death of his father when he was eleven years old. A businesswoman, who supplied concrete to road contractors, she inspired him through her participation in traditional religious ceremonies where the Olokun rhythms were used to accompany worship of the river goddess. As a youngster, Fashek played maracas during the ceremonies. .

While he developed an early interest in the music of Jamaica, Fashek was equally drawn to the music of Indian cinema. Learning to play guitar while in secondary school, Fashek joined a band, Jah Stix, and began playing in clubs in the capitol city of Lagos. .

Fashek, whose name means "power of miracles, the high priest does not live",had a close relationship with the legendary late Nigerian musician and bandleader Fela Anikulapo  Kuti, and he includes a Fela composition “Water No Get Enemy” on the new album. “He’s like my big brother,” Majek has said and like Fela, he not only delivers hard-hitting rhythms, but also a forceful criticism of social and political issues. On Little Patience, Majek's acid tongue and sharp wit offer insightful and powerful lyrics over fresh Afro-reggae grooves. He combines so many types of music because as he says, "when the styles blend together, music can free the world."

His album "Little Patience" on the Coral Music label is in many ways Fashek’s masterwork - the culmination of his life’s extraordinary journey. With powerful and provocative songs like the soulful “Power of a Woman,” or the inspiring “Someday One Day,” it is a remarkable collection that incorporates Majek’s core influences of Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Jimi Hendrix. He seamlessly meshes roots, rock, reggae and Afrobeat into a unique signature sound called kpangolo. Majek describes it as “the sound of many cultures coming together.”

Majek Fashek has always sung from the soul about the political and social struggles he has faced in his long and winding road from Nigeria to the U.S. After winning six awards at the annual PMAN ceremony, he was signed to CBS Nigeria, but soon transferred to Island Records’ subsidiary Mango, a label more accustomed to marketing reggae internationally.

What Happened to Him?

It Feburary this year,it was rumoured that fashek was dead, however it was later dispelled! What sparked off the death rumour is the present state of Majek Fashek as he has grown lean and looks older than his age.

Apart from his physical appearance, the Prisoner of Conscience crooner's mode of dressing is not as sparkling as it used to be.

Majek, as he is popularly called, was said to have run amock while in the US, an allegation he denied.

He was also said to have been hooked on drugs and alcohol, among other things.

Speaking through some of his friends, especially Rutheousman, the Rain Maker said ”I am alive, my new album will put the records straight.

It has been revealed that the reggae musician is hale and hearty and currently working at an Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja-based studio on a new album.

~The Mandators~

The Mandators, led by the charismatic Victor Essiet, have long been one of Nigeria's best kept secrets. Thrilling stadium crowds of over 80,000 people, their performances are legendary. Add to that, several releases in Africa and the massive LP, "Crisis ," which went platinum for sales beyond half a million, and it is clearly evident that they are poised for success here in the United States.

The name "Mandators" has its origin in the days of Victor's youth. As he explains, "The name Mandators came to me when I was just a boy, through divine inspiration. I didn't understand what it meant at the time. But now I know that Jah was mandating love and justice through music."

Growing up in Africa, Victor's early childhood was no indication of the hardships he would have to face as a young boy on the road to manhood. Prior to the civil war and Victor's birth, his father was very prosperous and though not a musician, he had a great love for and was an active supporter of the arts. He would sponsor local musicians, sending them to school, as was as sponsoring and participating in local dance ceremonies.  His father's love extended beyond traditional music and included modern European music and British ballroom dancing as well. Victor's family also participated in daily Christian hymnal singing, led by his mother. It was in the creative surrounding that Victor entered the world.

As the civil war escalated and his father's financial status began to deteriorate, Victor could not directly benefit from his father's support of the arts. Towards the war's end, its repercussions of affliction took its toll on Victor's family, resulting in the death of his uncle and sister, and, due to government policy, the seizing of all his father's assets, leaving the family in financial ruin. In 1972, tragedy struck again when his father became seriously ill, and a car accident took the life of his mother. With the family in total disarray and without anyone to look after him, the need for survival took over and Victor strived to stay alive.

Victor's journeys took him to a variety of odd jobs that didn't allow him the means to survive, so he decided to look for household work. Through talking with a Naval officer in the town of Calabar, Victor was taken to Lagos and began working for a Naval officer there. While working for this officer, Victor asked for permission to take some time off to attend school. The officer agreed and with his small wages, Victor paid his own way to attend school. It was at school, that Victor was able to strengthen his natural music talents and follow his desire to grow as a musician.

Spending his high school years in Lagos, Victor bought a guitar so that he could arrange his own songs exactly the way he heard them in his head. His early influences included Ken Lazarus, Jimmy Cliff and inevitably, Bob Marley. As Victor states; "Bob brought a lot of changes, because when Bob's music came out, the music that came into Africa was the African kind of rhythm, the reggae music that has a lot of African roots. So when it came to Africa, that made a lot of difference."

Victor's dedication and perseverance paid off in 1979, when someone he knew, financially backed him to record the Mandators' first album, "Sunrise."  Three years later, the Mandators released "Imagination," an album for which he toured, with a then unknown guitarist named Majek Fashek. After a three year hiatus, the Mandators released "Crisis," which swept the country like wildfire. Released on Polygram/Nigeria label, it was one of the first big commercial hits for African Reggae in Nigeria. Following "Crisis," the Mandators recorded three more records: "Rat Race," "Rebel" and "Storm." It is the highlights from these three albums that comprised their first US release in 1994  (Heartbeat Records),  "Power of the People: Nigerian Reggae," which was followed by "Crucial" in 1998 (Mystic Records) the group's first American produced CD and the second U.S. release.

Though The Mandators have released several albums (the last, Crisis, sold half a million copies) and played to stadium crowds in their home of Nigeria, the band's socially conscious reggae didn't reach America's shores until Heartbeat released Power of the People: Nigerian Reggae, a sampler from their albums released between 1988 and 1992

~Naughty By Nature~

If any rappers deserve to be called poets, Treach and Vinnie of Naughty By Nature do. They fire off line after line chock-full of internal rhymes and alliterations, conjure detailed scenes, drop allusions, and display a reassuring knowledge of the world beyond hip-hop.Treach and VinRock, beyond their impressive lyrical content and manipulation of phrases, enhance their poetics by deftly manipulating the language's sounds and accents, resulting in a flow in the truest sense of the word. They are ranked the 814th best musical artist of all time by Acclaimedmusic.net

Naughty by Nature pulled off the neat trick of landing big, instantly catchy anthems on the pop charts while maintaining their street-level credibility among the hardcore rap faithful; one of the first groups to successfully perform such a balancing act. The group was formed in East Orange, NJ, in 1986, while all three members -- MCs Treach (born Anthony Criss) and Vinnie (born Vincent Brown), and DJ Kay Gee (born Keir Gist) -- were attending the same high school. Initially called New Style, they began performing at talent shows and were discovered by Queen Latifah a few years later; she signed the group to her management company and helped them land a deal with Tommy Boy Records. Naughty by Nature's self-titled debut LP, "Naughty by Nature" was released in 1991 and produced an inescapable Top Ten hit in "O.P.P." (which supposedly stood for "other people's property," though a close listen to the lyrics revealed that the second P represented male or female genitals). They sampled The Jackson 5's , "A.B.C." and turned it into "O.P.P." which was the first single from the album . The song catapulted their success and made Naughty by Nature a household name. O.P.P. is also one of Hip Hop music's greatest songs according to numerous industry and fan voted countdowns. "O.P.P." made Naughty by Nature crossover stars, yet their ghetto sensibility and gritty street funk not to mention Treach's nimble rhyming technique made them popular in the hip-hop underground as well.

Naughty By Nature's self-titled debut can rightfully be called timeless. When it dropped in 1991, the global hip-hop community took notice, and its stature stands years later. Featured here is the sing-along club classic "O.P.P." Queen Latifah spices up "Wickedest Man Alive" while Lakim Shabazz guests on the Luis "Louie Louie" Vega-produced "1,2,3." This collection of bouncy beats and powerful rhymes is a must-have for lovers of East Coast hip-hop.

Treach began a secondary acting career in 1992, appearing in "Juice" he would go on to supporting roles in The Meteor Man, Who's the Man?,Jason's Lyric, among others.

Despite an excellent debut album, Naughty by Nature was pegged as a one-hit wonder by some observers -- after all, they'd never duplicate the inescapably catchy "O.P.P.," would they? but they proved that they could,Naughty by Nature repeated their success with the 1993 follow-up album, "19 Naughty III", which produced another ubiquitous crossover smash in the "hey! ho!" chant of "Hip Hop Hooray"; the album hit the Top Five and, like its predecessor, went platinum. The video was directed by Spike Lee and featured other hip-hop artists popular in the early 1990s, including Queen Latifah, Eazy-E, Run-D.M.C., and Kris Kross.

The album confirmed that Naughty by Nature were indeed highly underrated in terms of consistency. It's a shade less consistent than the debut, but has all the same strengths: head-nodding beats, Treach's bouncy flow, and a difficult balance between street attitude and accessibility. Naughty by Nature clearly comes from the streets, and have all the aggression of the streets, but they don't glamorize the streets; sure, they'll take care of themselves in a harsh environment, but ultimately they prefer to steer clear of trouble, cops, and jail. It's a refreshingly grounded and realistic perspective, best heard on "Daddy Was a Street Corner," "The Hood Comes First," and "The Only Ones." There are also energized guest appearances from Heavy D ("Ready for Dem"wink and Queen Latifah ("Sleeping on Jersey"wink.

1995's "Poverty's Paradise" was the group's final album for Tommy Boy Records; though it didn't spawn as many major hits it striked up enough hard-edged partying in their smart lyrics and sharp beats to keep on top of the hip-hop core, while a handful of radio-ready tracks throw them into wider pastures just to remind everyone else they're also making marks on the pop charts. The Album went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album in 1996,which was a brand new category at the time,  the album,

A recording hiatus of several years followed; during that time, Treach pursued his acting career, most notably landing a recurring role on the HBO prison drama "Oz" and Kay Gee greatly expanded his outside production work, helming records for Zhané, Aaliyah, Krayzie Bone, and Next, among others. Naughty by Nature started their own music imprint, Illtown Records, and released an album from their proteges the Rottin Razkals.

~What happened to Naughty By Nature

The group made headlines; in 1997, both Treach and Vinnie were arrested in Harlem for illegal weapons possession.

In 1999, Treach married Pepa, of Salt-N-Pepa (a union that would dissolve two years later).

Also in 1999, Naughty by Nature finally returned with a new album on Arista, titled 19 Naughty Nine: Nature's Fury. "Jamboree," featuring Zhané, was a sizable hit.

After that album's release a dispute regarding finances developed between Kay Gee and Treach, with Treach blaming Kay Gee for squandering the group's finances. DJ Kay Gee decided to leave Naughty by Nature in late 2000. He started to develop his own record label Divine Mill.Kay Gee departed to concentrate full-time on his production career.

In May 2006 Kay Gee reunited with Treach and rejoined Naughty by Nature at a concert at B.B. King's nightclub. They will be working together on their next album, tentatively titled Anthem Inc

Treach and Vinnie struck a deal with TVT, and the first Naughty by Nature album as a duo, IIcons, was released in early 2002 using a variety of different producers including Da Beatminerz; the album, however, received a lukewarm reception from the public. IIcons is their last album to date.

In 2008,Naughty By Nature were honored by VH1 at the Hip Hop Honors 2008. The event also paid homage to the late R&B legend Isaac Hayes .The group performed & closed the show performing “Uptown Anthem” and “Hip Hop Hooray.”

Naughty By Nature is currently in the studio working on "Anthem Inc." their first album in over eight years.

~Although Naughty haven't been active with new albums for quite some time, they have been a very hot touring act. The guys are booked all summer in Europe and say they perform most of the year. Naughty By Nature went on a cross-Canada tour earlier this year feb-March 09.

Naughty by Nature are coming with a brand-new sound on their single "Know Me Better." Vin Rock takes the reins for most of the new record, experimenting with Southern delivery while trying to lure a woman to his bedroom. The beat has a club thump over heavy bass and synths.

Meanwhile, Naughty's street leaker "I Got" samples Method Man's voice from his timeless theme song "Method Man." Treach commands the record. "I got a chip on my shoulder that Bill Gates ain't make," he raps. "I got a connect up in Harlem, got a great weight rate."

"When the people hear this new album, Anthem Inc., they'll see that Naughty hasn't gone anywhere," Treach advised on a recent visit to the MTV News offices. "We still got that same gutter music. We still have all the big anthem records."

For the album, Vin and Treach reunited with DJ Kay Gee, who handled most of the production.

"The record is coming out real dope," Vin said. "It feels just like back in the day to have all of us back together."

Naughty are looking to drop their LP sometime this fall.

Naughty recently signed a deal with Microsoft and Windows Mobile for the new customized Touch Pro2 phone.Vin secured the deal after a chance meeting with a Microsoft exec on an airplane. You can access "Get to Know You Better" and many other Naughty records on the phone.
