CHAPTER ONE
( FEBRUARY 15,1974)
"I will come to your house in the evening for the assignment " Yemi said as he went to his house direction.
"okay i will be waiting for you "i replied yemi as i headed to my house direction in my brown-white shirt and my faint ashes shorts school uniform.
well my name Ekundayo Ajayi (Gabriel )though my parents didn't named me that, but later on you will get to know how i came up with the name. I was born in 1954 making me 20years of age, i hail from Ekiti state in Ekiti east local government of the state. (if you are from Ekiti you will know the local government ).
i was the only child of my parents, my mom suffered alot of miscarriage for six years before she eventually gave birth to me that is how my name was called EKUNDAYO. My dad was once an hunter before he eventually joined the Nigerian army in 1959.Though my dad only went to primary school because there is nobody to sponsor him so he had to withdraw and concentrate on his hunting job.my dad was helped by one of his uncle who was then a colonel to be recruited into the Nigerian army, my dad kept every thing away from us throughout the process .until one day around 4pm in the evening beaming with smile. It was then he broke the news to me and my mom. we were gutted when he broke the news, for my mom it seems like some force want to snatch her husband away from her. But my dad assured us that he will be visiting us every six months.
"i promise you my dear wife"my dad said before he left that faithful morning to Lagos
My dad kept his promise by visiting us every six months. Any time he visits, our house is always jammed pack with friends family and well wishers and my dad who was very famous will always come with a lot of goody things when he comes visiting. My dad keeps visiting until that day very sad day when my father's colleague was sent from kaduna to announced to us that my father was among the gallant soldiers who lost their lives in Fratricidal civil war caused by diplomatic blunder on the part of the two friends (GOWON&OJUKWU).The four years put the whole country in pandemonium. At home in my town we used to listen to the radio how millions of lives and properties were lost also how the two friends went to aburi in Ghana to settle there quarrel with the then Ghana head general Ankrah. but i never dreamt that my father will lost his life during the war. i still remember that day(march 27 1968) .ever since then my mom who was a trader (yam seller)has been in charge of my father's property. my father's family were so nice with my mom that they released everything to her but advised her to maintain it very well.
i quickly gone over the incident. six months time i will be writing my waec thanks to my mother who has already paid for it. i so much love my mom in fact i can do anything for her just to be happy. I was the librarian boy in my school then. To tell you the truth i am a brilliant boy cool and humble. i was one of the youngest students in my class then. my mates keep telling me i was lucky. well am lucky, My achievements were many both in the state and outside the state .i won many laurel and accolades for my school.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm little did i know the tragedy that awaits me at home

CONTINUATION OF CHAPTER 1
Few houses to our house i sighted a lot of people outside our house, standing in groups discussing
"what is going on there?" i ask no One in particular. I moved closer, now i could see everybody clearly but i notice they were all carrying sad and mourning face.but the one that caught my attention was mummy kemi, our neighbor she was crying bitterly.Millions of evil thoughts ran through my mind .has any bad thing happened to her but actually if anything happens to her she won't be crying outside our house
"No God forbid " i silently pray that no evil thing should happen to my mom. From nowhere a strange wind blew into my direction given me a bad feeling. I was afraid with anxiety and fear on my face. Mummy kemi sighted me,she ran to meet me where i was standing, she quickly wiped her tears. But i can see it clearly on her face.
"mummy why are you crying and what is happening here? "
"nothing Ekundayo just follow me "
I followed her.one woman who was one of my mom age mate cried out loud immediately she saw me coming. Her statement caught my attention
"Aah why this woman? Why she has suffered alot"
My saliva dry immediately,i released my hand from mummy kemi grips as i ran straight to our house.
On getting inside i met many of our family members in the sitting room weeping.
" you are welcome my son have your seat " our family head said but my mind was nowhere but just to see my mom.without listening to family head order,i headstraight to my mom room but

But i was seized by some strong men who carried me back to the sitting room. I struggled to loose my self from their grips but but i was weak. Pa oye the family head asked me to sit down
"you see my son God who is cooking the soup has not left the kitchen " he paused a little before he continued
" my son i know you will become great in future but you have to leave today behind and face the future"
After a lot word of encouragement my mom death news was broken to me
" Nooooooooooooooohh" i almost shouted the house down. The world has come to an end for me. I was restless. I demand if i could see my mom corpse they agreed but i was followed by the two strong men that seized me the other time.
"momma " i cried when i saw her corpse tears filled my wet face
"momma am back from school " i said but no reply. I prayed silently expecting something miraculous to happen, but alas nothing happened.
I was devastated. I groan in pain as i held my dead mother clothe . I cursed my life and the day i was born. I cursed God who allowed such a evil disaster to befall my family. The two men who were with me in the room ushered me back to the sitting room where all the family members were waiting for me

CHAPTER 2
(FEBRUARY 18 1974)
Everything was still like a dream to me. I silently prayed to God that if everything about my mom death is a dream he should please wake me up,But alas it was not a Dream.
I can't control my tears that day my Joy finally left me. Every attempt by the family friends to console me proved abortive,so they let me be.I was devastated but later on it dawned on me that all my tears can't bring her back to life.
The night before the incident, she complained that she was weak and having slight headache. She took medicine she even drank the concoction she prepared two days earlier.
That morning i even suggested she rest at home, but she insists of going to the farm because there was no food at home. I even suggested i follow her but she was so adamant
" mt son go to school i will take care of my self " i eventually surrendered to her wish. How i wish i was there with her on the farm she would have not die. When she became tired and week, she decided to rest in the nearby hut but she fainted on her way with nobody to help, until after on hour she was seen by a passerby who quickly alert the nearby farmers but it was too late.

Throughout my stay in school that day i was restless, sensing some bad omen my friends even my teachers noticed that i was Not happy
" Dayo any problems?"they will asked

" No problem am fine " i would reply them instantly. But deep inside me knew i wasn't okay, until i met the unexpected at home. My mom was eventually buried on February 17 1974 .

On the 18th, by 4pm all the family gathered at our house for family meeting, even my uncle , uncle Jimi who based in Lagos was around for my mom burial. Every members of the family were present in the meeting.
Pa oye presided over the meeting

" I greet every body for honouring my invitation for this meeting, my prayer is the next time we will be gathering like this it will no be for sorrow event like this. " they all chorused Amen.

"I called this meeting because of Ekundayo," everywhere was silent as they were looking at each other face.

" i know you may be wondering what the urgent meeting is all about. We All know that Ekundayo mother who happens to be her only hope is no more . And we are the only family he has left. We have to take care of him " everybody nodded affirmatively in agreement with what pa oye has said.
Pa oye seeing they all agreed with him smile as he continues his speech. Meanwhile i was sitting calmly on the chair beside pa oye.

"that is why we the elders have decided to put Ekundayo under jimi care this means Ekundayo will follow jimi when he is returning to Lagos".
I can't believe my ears, me follow uncle jimi i was happy and at the same time sad. After everyone has finished talking i stood up to address the whole family.

" I greet everyone present for this meeting i appreciate you All for your love and care. Am also happy at the decision of the family but " all eyes were on me as if i want to pass judgement . Me too i was surprised at them.
It was pa oye who broke the silence

" But what my son, tell us we will respect your decision "

" Sir like i have said am happy with the family decision but i will be writing my waec in six months time "

" That is not the problem my son Jimi will take care of that, even to the higher institutions " pa oye added

" but my mom has paid for the waec"

" she only paid little out of it" i heard mummy timo ( Timothy ) saying
"what? " i was speechless

CONTINUATION OF CHAPTER 2.
" what " i was speechless

Mummy timo is the bursar of my school . This woman was the one who told me my mom has paid for the waec, but i was surprise with what she is now saying.

" Yes it is true i told you your mother has paid for the waec ,but i only did that according to her instruction, so that you Will be rest assured and prepared well for the exam" i was shocked

" she only paid #5 out of #21 of the waec fee, but she promised to balance the money before the exam "she added.

I became weak immediately as i sat back on the chair . There was silence everywhere for like two minutes, until pa oye broke the silence.

" As you can see now, you have no option than to follow jimi to Lagos". " jimi what do you have to say" uncle jimi stood up and address the family

" I thank the whole family for everything and i promise that i will take care of Ekundayo to your satisfaction and. As God will help me"

Everybody was happy with uncle Jimi response

" jimi we are proud of you. We believe God will help you on the behalf of the entire family we want to appreciate you for your cooperation and understanding ,thank you very much "

After the meeting i was asked prepares everything ready because i will be leaving with uncle jimi as early as possible the next day.
