let me tell you what the problem is with Nigeria and Nigerians

THE MENTALITY OF NIGERIANS - here in London everybody wants to hang out with rich people's kids - excuse me don't they mean the children of the politicians who have emptied the public purse. In Nigeria people in Nigeria don't care how u made the money they will stay hail you - to me this is disgusting.

CHANGE THE MENTALITY OF PEOPLE - THE COUNTRY WILL CHANGE - the level of pretence and hypocrisy is that country is astonishing - going to church to spend 4 hours when u leave you do not follow the teachings of the bible - big joke.

God  Bless you Dora. From what i see on this thread is just that Nigerians think that badmouthing everything they themselves are better. I call this the FELA SYNDROME.

SING ABOUT HOW BAD OUR LEADERS ARE AND DANCE ABOUT IT KILL OUR LEADERS AND THEN CONTINUE THE BLAMING AND BUCK PASSING. One of the trait of a Nigeria is dissillusionment.

Nigerians forget that our leaders come from the people like me and you. Every Leader was a follower. A bad leader was a bad follower. WE NIGERIANS WHAT TO CUT OF THE HEAD TO JUSTIFY A BODY?

WE NIGERIANS THINK THAT IF WE SING BAD GOOD WILL COME. WE LIE.

DORA DOES NOT OWE YOU OR I ANY EXPLANATION. SHE CAN PACK AND GO IF SHE LIKES OR HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN HOW THIS ONE WOMAN SAVED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE?   SHE SAVED THE POOR SOLDIERS THE FARMERS THE WORKERS FROM THE HANDS OF EVIL MEN.

LAUGH FOR ALL YOU LIKE. THEY LAUGHED AT SOLUDO BUT NOW PEOPLE ARE DISCUSSING HOW THE BANKS ARE OWED OVER $2 billion !!!!!

I remember that they mocked Germany back in the day before hitler came.

Yes Nigeria is a Joke now but there will come a time they will not laugh any more but grin and say they are Nigerians and proud they are

God bless Nigeria

How exactly do you respond to madam dora urging people not to send their kids abroad for better quality education seeing as she herself sent her kids abroad and even married oyibo??

How about the leaders lead by example and we wont complain or badmouth anything worth badmouthing!!

A thing that a lot of us do not understand is that the bad image Nigeria is getting is affecting us Nigerians and it will get worse! Infact if anyone should be rebranding, I think it is Nigerians all around the world themselves. Its like a family name with a bad name, it is those who bear the name that have the responsibility to 'rebrand' it.

Im surprised that people laugh at Dora's effort to rebrand the country. I am not in support of her methods either but I cannot be against someone who is trying to change the attitude of foreigners towards me. We know government we have is crazy, but should we continue to allow that to affect us? Nigerians all around the world are working hard to make a name for themselves but they have to work 4 times harder because of the name Nigeria. People eye us with suspicious eyes. As Nigerians, it affects us every where we go.

This BBC documentary does us more bad that good. We may be laughing at Dora but she is the information minister, she was NAFDAC head, her children are prolly in best schools in the world and don't have to work as hard as some of us. The bad name almost does not affect her. She goes around with a diplomatic passport, she is not subjected to crazy and funny searches at airports. We are the ones who suffer all this rubbish.

Whichever way, whether in support of Dora or not, we need rebranding. In reality, The news spurned by the western media is much more magnified than it really is.

An example: Everywhere I go, my friends ask me if the 'war' in Nigeria is over and I ask them which war? Their response is the Niger Delta war and I tell them its just with a small region and its not even in the scale of what we will call war. I don't blame them for this, its the news the media gives to them that they will believe.

My thoughts have never been more concisely put. God bless you, whoever you are.
Re: BBC Documentary On Rebranding Nigeria by princekevo(m): 6:42am On Oct 23, 2009
Well all these shouting on the street and to the world in the name of re branding Nigerian is useless.
You don't fight for respect neither can you fight for good image, you comand them by your acts.
Is jst a question of the government taking up their responsibilities to its citizens, stetting up a moral standard for them and citizens living up to tht moral standard. Automatically the world would start respecting Nigeria as a country and its citizens.
Shouting on the media, while all your kids are studying overseas as a result of poor education standard in Nigeria, while our leaders still make deposits on their foreign account on a daily bases will never change one bit.

texazzpete:

I wonder if you realise that most of the banks in question are not owned or run by their respective Governments. And that it is not the banks' duty to vet the source of the monies being deposited there. There are lists of banned individuals and groups (such as groups associated with terrorism, terrorists) that cannot open accounts in any of the western banks. However it is extremely unlikely that banking facilities would be denied to individuals with no proven conviction for illegal embezzlement.

Why would a swiss bank refuse a deposit from Lucky Igbinedion when Nigeria has never been able to convict him (i.e prove convincingly in a law court) that he stole money? You and i know he stole Edo State blind, but since your country is too lazy and corrupt to nail him and his ilk, in the eyes of the law he's clean grin
Sorry sir i beg to disagree with you here. Zimbabwe top government official accounts and assets has been frozen for years now in most of the western countries, even travel restriction to them and their family members. For what reasons? We all believe becoz of the corruption level at government. Why such measures can not be taken against Nigerian top government officials, if indeed they genuinely wanna help Africa. Does it mean they are not aware of the corruption level in Nigerian government officials, or is it that Nigerian citizens are having a better life than that of Zimbabwe?
Listen all these is all abt returns and submission. If the western government thinks they gain nothing from our loots being deposited in their banks, they should apply the same measures used against Zimbabwe and other African leaders, and not until any of them is being convicted for crime.

I remember in the Good book where one of the Advisers of AHAB the king did not believe that things will get better in Isreal THE NEXT DAY. The Prophet of old told him he will see it but he will not enjoy it.

Like I said, you may not like Dora's methods (I don't too) but using your analogy, should the grandchildren then sit down and fold their hands and allow people to call them rapists and thieves because of what the chiefs and elders do? What's more painful is that the people who maltreat the grandchildren for the sins of their elders will not dare maltreat these elders.

My point is, Ibori, Igbinedion, Kalu, etc and all the thieves in Government do not suffer the maltreatment and name calling we the average Nigerians get all around the world. Their children can afford to go to the best schools and no embassy dares refuse them visa. We are the ones who go through strict and almost impossible visa requirements, we are the ones who suffer the indignity at airports when we travel, we are the ones who get laughed at by our mates from other countries and therefore, we need REBRANDING.

If the head of the family (family chief) and elders are still members of the king's council and provide wines during the council meetings, you think the other elders would mind, but rest assured when their kith and kin want to marry or have any dealings with the member of the family, the bad image will be highlighted and pointed out boldly.  Although some explorers will go ahead, afterall even children of self confessed wizards/witches still get married to people from bad families.

If the children don't like the bad name then they should deal with the situation at the family level first before trying to address others opinion.  with noticeable changes of the family members it becomes easier.

In Nigeria we we always or most times have misplaced priorities or out square peg in round holes. What exactly are we rebranding, what does rebranding have to do to the common man on the street,is rebranding Nigeria our immediate and pressing problems Rebranding Nigeria without change in atitude of our leaders is complete waste of time.Nigeria has no motorable roads,no functional rail system,no power supply, our educational system is in tatters, our judicial system is a mockery of justice, unemployment is drastically on the increase,Insecurity is now our motto,so tell me all you apostles of rebranding, what are you rebranding. And those of you outside the country that think our comments give u bad image outside there, what are you out there doing, why not stay here and do all you have to do,if you are in school why going to school outside there,i have been there so many times and i must say its so pathetic how most Nigerians live there,a live of humiliation and pity yet the last thing on their mind is coming back home, where virtually nothing works. Those of you asking us to pray for our leaders,we have been praying for Nigerian since i was a kid and am about 3 decades old,yet we are were we are if prayers of almost 30 years and we are still like this, then, then, then, And if you must know few months after madam rebranding launched her rebranding crap, the wedding of her daughter was aired live on NTA and they fearlessly kept repeating that the wedding was much more than 200 million naira, so tell me does she have the moral justification to talk about rebranding Nigeria, she shud be somewhere in jail if u ask me, God Help Nigeria

Rebranding is not the solution what we should be doing is rebuilding NIGERIA. rem. that child syrup MY PIKIN that killed several babies, imagine a new wrapper for it with the same deadly substance in it, I guess you know what happens next, that exactly what the re brandin exercise is. Another thing is that we lack examplary leaders who are avowed to keep the status quo, what we should be doing is REBUILDING and i make bold to say IT CANT BE DONE BY THEM, the current set of recycled leaders must be ousted

@bolalanleolu

Leaders are not evil spirit they are human beings. We must patiently tell our leaders what we want in love and good imaginations.

NOTE MANY OF OUR LEADERS READ YOUR POST ON NAIRALAND SOME SEE YOU DONT HAVE HOPE IN THEM SO THEY MAKE EXCUSE FOR NOT TRYING. YOU ARE ALSO PLANTING THE SEED IN THE HEART OF THE YOUNG LEADERS THAT NOTHING WILL WORK SO WHY NOT I STEAL.

A MAN ONCE SAID THAT MOST GOOD AFRICAN LEADERS ARE POOR WHEN THEY LEAVE OFFICE. SO THEY ARE CORNERED SO THAT THEY STEAL BEFORE THEY LEAVE OFFICE.

THERE IS AN ELITE THEY ARE AMORPHOUS THEY ALWAYS GET HORRIBLE DEALS WITH YOUR LEADERS THEY ARE TRAINED TO DO THIS JOB IT IS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR CENTURIES. THEY MAKE YOUR LEADERS LOOK LIKE BABIES AND MAKE THEM FEAR OF TOMMORROW. THEY ARE YOUR TECHNOCRATIC ELITES THEY STEAL MAJORITY OF THE MONEY AND TRUMPET THE ONES STOLEN BY YOUR LEADERS.

THE GENERALISATION THAT ALL OUR LEADERS ARE THIEVES SHOULD STOP.

IF WE CONTINUE TO GENERALISE WE LEAVE OUR NEW, OLD AND UPCOMING NO CHOICE TO TO BE BAD LEADERS.

WE ARE CONDEMNED TO IMAGINE GOOD THINGS

GOD BLESS NIGERIA

Madam Dora is sincerely doing her best, but i think it would have been the best for her and the country if she remained in the health sector. Since she'd been the minister of information we keep hearing funny stories which i believe is intended to rubbish the name she had worked so hard to build.

Rebranding Nigeria is like pouring whitewash on a dirty wall. First of all clean the wall before carrying the former. People have eyes and can see the problems and corruption in this country which is so much that ordinary rebranding cannot solve. As i'm typing at the moment, there are some government workers embezzling money somewhere. He knows that the worse that can happen to him if he's caught is to refund all he has stolen ( those they can see ofcourse). We still have problem with power after billions have been spent to rectify it. These and many more are the problems which rebranding cannot solve. We need to take decisive action.

As for BBC and CNN, what are they meant for? They are propaganda machines of the west. These news network look for the slightest opportunity to ridicule Africans especially Nigerians and the bad thing about it is that we give them the opportunity. We should try to put our house in order.
Also, i don't think it would be a bad idea if we hit back at them. For instance, if you go to the British museum, you would see alot of Nigerian artefacts. It pains me alot. Our leaders have done nothing to collect them back from those thieves, rather they are busy looting public funds. Why wont we be laughing stock?

Lets not collude with foreigners who see only the negative things coming out of Nigeria.

Re: BBC Documentary On Rebranding Nigeria by maddock(m): 10:13am On Oct 27, 2009
I am so sick of hearing so many stories about our leaders are this and thats! These leaders where do they emanate from? from amongst us. Case 1 scenario-- Rumours of increase in pump price, reactions from petrol attendants and bus drivers. Closure of the fuel pumps so as to sell double the price to area boys who would inturn sell to the innocent public. Drivers increasing taxi fares by a 100% as a result of just the rumour.I dont want to talk about the traders in the market. These are people at the very lowest level of public service. Just imagine if these people should be at the healms of affairs of the country, what they are going to do.
A total rebranding of the country should be begin from the man in the mirror,YOU. When going to office in the morning is it Yaradua that you see along Wasimi near maryland defeacating in the full view of the public, or is it Ibori that you see that throws satchet water nylon from moving buses. My neighbours has kids schooling in the United Kingdom, but nobody complains so why complain when those kids are Dora's own.A large percentage of Nigerians are yaradua, ibori, igbenidion ,bode george etc, its just that not every body has that opportunity to really occupy their positions.
Have you ever wondered why we keep having one bad leaders after another in each successive regimes, cos the mindset of all Nigerias whether home or abroad are almost the same. So before you think you are very intelligent to start talking intelligently about the problems of Nigeria and start pointing accusing fingers at the so called LEADERS,do a thorough soul searching of yourself.
