I think what you meant is septic tank, that's where shits flows in.
Soak away is where waste water from kitchen or even septic tank flows in depending on how the plumber connects it.

How many people are you estimating to occupy the bungallow house?. This will determine the size of the septic tank. And don't make the mistake of channeling the wast water that surpose to go to soak away to septic tank, if you do, the septic tank go dey full on time.

Yeah you are right... Is painting I know how to do best. Am a novice in construction.

The soak away will be in the same place with the septic tank, slightly divided by a block of wall.

Some one is recommending 6 ft width by 10 ft length. The depth will be 10ft by 8ft steeped.

The occupants are a small family of about 7.

It's ok, but the opening linking the soak away to septic tank shouldn't go down too much if not the septic tank will be a waste.

A septic tank of 7ft length by 4ft span and 8ft depth is okay. You may need to introduce columns and beams if the span is more than 4ft i.e I.2m. and will be uneconomical and waste of money for a tank meant for a small household. 1.2m by 1.2m average depth 1.5m is okay for the soak away pit.

Sizing of a soakaway

The length of the soakaway drains is determined by the number of bedrooms in the house and the porosity of the soil. Standard regulations states that for any house up to and including 3 bedrooms, the minimum size sewage system that can be installed is for 5 persons, with one extra person added for each extra bedroom. A 3 bedroom house requires a 5 person plant, a 4 bedroom house a 6 person plant, etc. However, all this rules are sometimes not applicable in Nigeria because a 3 bedroom bungalow here may have upto ten persons living inside. For seven persons living in a small bungalow See my design schedule affix in pics

You must give adequate space for excavation to allow for work space. Your builder / workmen know that. The dimensions stated above is for bock wall.

The sizes depend on the number of people using the ST and SA pit. The sizes are included in the mechanical drawing in ur complete building plan. Please refer to it.

You rightly explained what Septic tank n Soakaway is. I will like to cheap in small thing. Septic tank and Soakaway are connected so that even when Septic tank is filled with water from kitchen etc, 100mm pvc pipe is linked to Soakaway to transfer the water.

He has already stated the number of users a 3 WCs.

I think the size of the tanks is based on the space left for it.

It is better he channel the waste water from kitchen and bathrooms directly to the soak away or gutter, the only water that should enter the septic tank is only the water used in flushing the toilets and when this water raises, it will enter the soak away through the link from the septic tank.

total length can be 4.5m/4500mm. the septic tank can be 2.5m/2500mm and the soak away can be 2m/2000mm and the width can be 2m/2000mm divide the 4.5m into 2... plaster the 2.5m and leave the 2m unplastered. so that water can escape freely

danny34 OK b4 responding to your question, I will advice you always give construction works to professionals to avoid regret.

The size of your Sewage/Septic tank depends on the Type which in turn depends on the land available and it's nature. If it's not a water logged area I will advice you use 9ft x 8ft x 10ft (LxBxH) which will last you for maybe 8yrs b4 any thinking of Soaking away. Make Sure the chamber for septic tank is smaller.

Re: Please What Is The Recommended Soak Away Size For A Small Bungalow by saydfact(m): 9:37am On Dec 29, 2016

There is no single standard in construction.. It's like asking for the standard door, standard car park or standard window... Even 600*600 we use for toilets isn't a must use...

My advice, look at what your setbacks can accommodate and do that... Someone already shared an excel sheet showing minimum required by planning authorities... So lucky u. Lol

Good Luck..

Noooo! Sometimes the water is important running in the same pipe to septic tank as it helps in sanitize or works as lubricant on the runway and that will prevent blockage. The water used for flush may not be enough as we have modern WCs now that doesn't required much water.

Thanks Guys for taking out time to respond to this enquiry, am elated. I am weighing my options, three toilets for a 4bedroom bungalow.... Family size is 5, an addition coming in the new year as man is clocking 29 n gat to settle down.

Am already thinking of 6ft width by 10ft length, depth is 10ft steeped down while the other size is 8ft.

My question now is of this how much should be septic tank and how much should be soak away

Everything in this world has standard sir.

Standards:
Car park is 2.5m x 5m
Bedroom size 3m x 3m
Doors (room .9m, living room 1.2m toilet .8m)
Windows (room 1.2x1.2m and MUST be more than one window facing diff direction, toilet .6mx.6m):
Almost everything in building has standard. Eg. Ur fence to the building from back - 3m, sides -3m, front - 6m anything less than that is substandard and will be questioned.

For ur last paragraph ur correct as the size of the septic tank depends on the space provided.

Architect is speaking.
Tnx.

I would have loved to discuss this off public space since you said you're an Architect.

You said the standard parking is 2.5m by 5m pls can you park a TRAILER on that space Or a Limo?

You also said the standard room is 3m by 3m, wld you consider that a standard when dealing with Dangote or designing for a wealthy man?

Imagine using a win of 1.2 by 1.2 in a bedroom of 12m by 9m... Hilarious.

I understand you reply is perhaps in line with your level of experience... Also please note that I'm an Architect with years of site experience... Sir.

Finally.... The living room door is not a standard 1.2, it depends on who you're designing for... If I'm designing for the fattest man or woman, putting a 1.2m door is a failed design.

That's why in Architects Data, you wld never see a dimension called standard but a range eg Door 0.6m - 2.7m by 1.8m - 3.6m etc.

Don't consider this an attack, consider it as a note from a colleague...

Thanks...
