went to federal public school..had three fs and still made 3.80..all these things depends on how you manage courses

Wat is dis one saying...na three Fs we dey talk....u r still a good student naaa ordinary 3fs in four 4years....we r talking bad academic records that a student will fail 4 to five courses in a semester uve not seen CGPA of 1.9 before??...that the student will have carry over courses to sit for every semester accumulated from previous level

an extra year isn't the end of life.

I failed a compulsory course in final year and had an extra year or so it looked like until it was discovered that I had a missing script which was found thankfully. you know how cases of missing scripts end up, right?

one thing life has taught me and is still teaching me is that it is not always how far but how well.

if you have an extra year, man up and face it. tell your folks the truth. it is not an option because na them go still support you last last.

Am in my 3rd year in school Just found out am having an extra year. I fell like my world has crumbled like all my dreams in school gone . People keep telling me I can still make it to 2.1 if really work hard and believe. In addition to that i keep hearing stories about life outside school. Can't really say or believe cause haven't had that much experience outside school. The truth is am having this low self esteem cause, my gp is not encouraging.. The main issue here is I don't know how to tell my parent.......

I won't be nice.

Secondly, I'd go ahead and call you a spoilt 5 year old! While you go about caressing your low self esteem, be kind to remember that someone ridiculed your way of thinking here. His name is DMeanMan

Let me tell you a story.
I have a friend, we went to the same junior secondary school, we parted ways as I changed school to complete my secondary education. Life brought us back together after his family moved to my neighborhood.

We completed secondary school and the race to enter the university started. I was fortunate enough (or so I thought) to gain admission a year before him and he ended up my junior (in the same university). We remained friends, even became closer, and at no time did he exhibit any symptom of self pity. You on the other hand are a spoilt 5 year old!

Life dealt him another blow and he wouldn't graduate with his mates!(I like to think that in Life there are no mates, you run your race, you and only you). Kola had to take an extra semester to graduate, and that wouldn't even get the better of him. He was, still is too damn positive.

While the 5 year old OP was busy wailing in tears over spilled milk, Kola took the bull by the Horn, he finished his semi final exams and started looking for a part time job (to pay the tuition) of the extra 2nd semester he has to retake.

The OP was still thinking of how to tell his parents but Kola had struck Gold, he got a Job as a Site Engineer (he read still reading Civil Engineering and was on a 3.0 of 5 CGPA ). Kola continued the job and was earning a unbelievable salary, while waiting for the second semester exam to start.

Kola bought a Car before his "mates" commenced NYSC!

Life is a pot of Beans, things won't go like you planned, your reactions when those unplanned things happen shows who you are.

So OP, get a hold of your life and stop thinking about society.

Oh quit yer b!tchin & pipe down. Enough people have failed school, school is just a mental prison society elites create to keep you from exploring & make you think you're only worthy cos of grades on paper. Believe when I say, your own small, at least you went to school. There's niggas who don't even have the money, or can spell "s-c-h-o-o-l". Move on, fucc school, fucc teachers & lecturers & fucc parents who insist school is everything cos they're the major cause of failure in their kids lives undecided

The truth is that your belief in a certificate us what would guarantee you failure. What us it with Nigerians and certificate? I am currently doing my masters, and I'm regretting why I started it in the first place. Within that time I have learnt graphics, photography and shoe making. I would soon be learning video editing and I ask myself, of what use is the Msc (and by partial extension the Bsc). This is one of the reasons why to even seat down and write the conclusion chapters of my project is taking a long time. Develop skills, life skills that would help you out there, not depending in certificate. Haba!

It depends on the school, some courses are prerequisite to others. If you fail one, you will be ineligible to take the other until you retake and pass that one. Some people can even be sure of two extra years in their 300 level. It's common in faculty of sciences and faculty of science.
op, which school do you attend and what course are you studying?

Bro I can relate absolutely.. That feeling you get when you find out you are having an extra year.. Most especially after forming for the babes on campus. Well.. Im guessing you attended a private Uni. Nothing is more painful than that. Knowing that your parents have to pay extra tuition and more so, after you must have bragged and lied to them that your GP was fantastic. Also realising that you are most likely to still graduate with a poor grade after everything. It feels bad.. But I want you to stay focused. Tell your parents about it. Beg them.. When you resume school for the new extra year, try to pick courses from 100 level or 200 level from a department outside yours. So it will add up to the number of units required in addition to your carry overs.
Stay focused... Be prayerful... Before you know it, you will be done and these sad thoughts will be history. Then you can proceed to do a Post graduate Diploma.. Apply for jobs.. Best bet places are schools.. start from there.
I had an extra year as well from a private Uni. It was tough.. I graduated eventually with a Third Class.. I didn't get a job until 4 years after. Went for my PGD to boost my poor grade.. Looking to save some money for my Masters.. Two years ago, i would never have had the guts to reveal all of this.. But we thank God for everything now..

Who degree or GPA epp these days? You may not even use the certificate you're chasing for the rest of your life believe me.
Bro calm down, that's is not the end of life. As I'm typing now, I'm a spilling student myself. In pharmacy school, not spilling but splashing is the trend.
As for your GPA, i believe it's even a better opportunity for you to hit it. The few courses you'll be doing during your spilling year will boost your GP if you concentrate and make it all As or Bs. No one will ask for your GPA during job interview. what they are interested in is your ability to deliver. You can even become self employed and give employment to many others.
You should also have known that your education is for yourself first, not your parents. stay positive and take control. You are not a dullard like bubu.

Well said!! cool I wish I could dash you 1 million likes for this profound truth. Sorry, I had to edit your post as it was rather long, but every bit was worth its weight in gold. cheesy

I know a lot of people who graduated with a 2.1 or 2.2 degree but are currently doing something totally different from what they studied in school and are making good money from it. The first question you need to ask is "What is my assignment on earth? What purpose was I sent here to fulfil?" Next question: "What are my talents and how can I maximise it to fulfil my assignment, serve humanity and improve myself?"

Once you have done that, you get a clear vision of your purpose and path in life, then the sky is your limit! wink wink

Let me say I understand how you feel cos I have once been in that shoe....May I tell you my story that I had the most fulfilling experience during that Extra year ... mehn it wasn't funny at first but I made a decision to live while enjoying the moment. How? you ask... By Serving others.

I presented myself in such a way that when its was time for my colleagues to leave me behind, I added value to them before they left....Start adding value to lives around you as a preparation for the reality of life.

You are worth so much and should maximize every opportunity you get to serve others... What do you have that others will appreciate if they get it free from YOU? ... mine was my ability to help coursemates design flow charts which was a skill I learnt during IT.

You can never loose your esteem while serving others, you loose it when you try to impress and you fail.

The amazing thing is you still have a better chance than I do, My course, Mathematics made me to be searching for the value of "x" when we all know its either -1 , 1 or 0 but it can take you series of corrolary and theorems on 3 or 4 pages just to prove it ...Crazy isn't it.

I knew I had the skill to articulate words and make ppt presentation and deliver same ...

It was that skill that a masters student saw in me that decided to work with me on a project that later gave me an opportunity to impact the lives of young diamond's in the rough who are finding their paths into the system via PreDegree program.

The most shocking thing there is my overall CGPA even after the extra was less than 2.00 .... It was that bad....So you see you are better off.

As if that was not enough, I didn't spend a whole month after my extras exam that I had an accident that Ade me bed ridden for a whole 3month due to multiple fractures from hip to leg.

So since I knew I never had a chance to compete as per Grades which was evident in all Job advertisement back then - reduced recently... I just give myself brain by furnishing my presentations skills from a reputable Government owned training institute ..National Broadcast Academy, where I gained more knowledge and received guidiance on how to maximize my voice, charisma and people skills.... which is evident in my current job as a Customer Service Executive and of which I am already even sending out CVs in order to embrace new challenges and widen my scope after almost a year resloving customers queries in a telecoms work space.

When I was in school, I found out in my 3rd year that I was gonna have an extra year (and I did studied a 5-year course). The funny thing is that we were just starting the hard courses then, and my gp wasn't making any sense then. Damn! I was perplexed. It was my mum and a few friends that were encouraging me then not to lose hope, that I should just work hard and all will be well. To cut the whole story short, I graduated with a 2.2, few points from a 2.1. I just want you to know that it's not over yet until it's over. Even if you don't come out with a good grade, believe that you'll make it after school (cos truly, you'll end up being better than so many that graduated with good grades). Just keep your head up and be serious with your life. God bless you cool cool

Just tell ur parent and go for the extra year. Having an extra year has nothing to do with ur future. There are first class and masters degrees student in the labour market talkless of 2:1. Stop thinking about how to get a job with a 2:2 or 3rd class. Start thinking about how u will make the best of ur life. Not many people know the reason for education, they only think its about going to school and getting a job. However, its about training ur brain to think outside the box and making a way for ur daily bread. You absolutely do not need school certificate to be successful in life. majority of the most successful people in this life can hardly boast of a degree certificate. What should be ur priority now should be completing ur education as well as learning a sustainable trade or business that will continually put food on ur table, a good shelter and a befitting outfit. Forget what ur friends will say, its not about how far or how fast but how well u are able to stand tall above everyone. Graduating before u does not mean they will become successful. Always take a set back in life as a blessings because it reset ur brain and make u check ur steps to know where u went wrong so as to correct future occurrence and gives u motivation & focus to excel in life. Best of luck in your future endeavors
cheers! wink
