The Power Of Religious Stories. . . . by mazaje(m): 12:33am On Dec 28, 2009
I just revealed to a new Nigerian friend that just came here recently that I am an atheist and he was stunned grin, He asked my why I was an atheist and I told him, We began discussing about the stories he has been made to accept as the basis for his existence since childhood and he was very uncomfortable and began throwing and the normal mantra at me. . . Jesus loves you bla bla bla. . .When we get to heaven we will ask god those question. . .believe and save yourself from hell. . .bla bla bla. . .He got so uncomfortable with my questions and left feeling scared and believing he meet the mythical satan grin. . . That really got me thinking abou religious beliefs and its endless stories and this my own conclusion. . .To control people and make them believe and hold unto what you want them to believe you instill fear into them. You give them a loophole and show them that they are nothing without your stories, You don't have to fear anything if you worship a story. If you question the story, the story will hurt you by sending you to the most awful place imaginable for eternity. Everything good you see is because of this story. Everything bad you see is merely a test from the story. So, no matter how badly your life goes, as long as you worship the story, your SALVATION will come from the story. Hence we have people believing in all these stories and trying to rationalize them by all means possible even if it means lying to themselves. . .

Just see what is happening in the world today, we have people blowing themselves up because they live according to stories they were told were true. . .People denying themselves medication because some story tells them that some people prayed and they were healed. . .People hating others because some story told them not to associate with them or hate them. . .Why do Nigerians give too much credence to Jewish and Arabian mythologies and stories and discard their own stories and myths?. . . .

These things are not peculiar to religious people. Atheists also kill people for some ideologies of their own. Atheists also hate other people - no doubt about it. I wonder why you give too much credence to simplistic arguments like this as if atheism has not provided the world with any type of the problems you are happy to highlight for religious people.

Well just like our colonial masters taught us how to read and write and to stop the killing of twins etc. They also taught us that thier gods were better than our gods. Since our people couldn't think for themselves they couldn't see through this. Its now gotten to the stage where very young children are now being indoctrinated with the bible or koran and not even being encouraged to think for themselves and make thier own decisions. Even in schools which are meant to be centres for learning evolution isn't taught because of thier religious belief systems which means the vast majority of nigerians don't even know what a dinosaur is. Until we learn to think for ourselves we will always be mental slaves to religion.

do their own stories and myths tell them not to hate others?

I wonder why we discard our own myths and stories for foreign mythology. . . . .

and do atheist stories and myths encourage tolerance of people with other beliefs?

And the atheist mythologies that encourage intolerance can be found in which books?

Yeah, we can hate others all on our own, why do we need any foreign help.

Religious stories are very powerful.
People believe stories that they would have rejected if it were presented to them from a non religious perspective.

Really, there is nothing wrong with you believing anything. It's your choice. But there is something wrong in not understanding that a believe is just a believe and it is different from a fact. There is something wrong in you telling me I am doomed for not believing the same things you believe even when you can not demonstrate those things to be facts.

". . . the average negroes possess too little intellect, self-reliance, and self-control to make it possible for them to sustain the burden of any respectable form of civilization without a large portion of external guidance and support." Francis Galton, 1873

I guess the man was correct.Galton, incidentally, was the cousin of the famous Charles Darwin.
