I will like to Join politics.

I will like to be a senator.

I will like to screw with business that do not understand that even when the almighty Goverment is not watching them, they have a responsibility to the people to improve their environment, because an improved environment, both intellectually and financially, means they can make more money introducing more products like their blackberries, and wifi clouding, but when the citizen's money are taken to another country and not recycled, then they cannot afford it.

Bankers are being sacked, telecoms company is taken advantaged of a slack govt., where will the jobs come from, Shell, that's planning to sell off so that it can take advantage of the weak laws in Iraq now?,

How can I become a senator?, without having to use juju,

"But I was lucky enough to be born in a time and place where society values my talent, and gave me a good education to develop that talent, set up the laws and the financial system to let me do what I love doing- and make me a lot of money doing it. The last I can do is help pay for all that"
Warren Buffet in Obama's Audacity of Hope

Yesterday news emanated that from Ghanaian sources that "The MTN Group has confirmed that the Head office of the West and Central Africa (WECA) region would to be located in Ghana, a statement in Accra said on Monday." The news report read thus:
The WECA regional office comprises of nine operating units - Nigeria, Benin, Cote D'Ivoire Liberia, Cameroon, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Congo Brazzaville and Ghana.

Ms. Mawuena Adjo Dumor, Corporate Service Executive of MTN Ghana, said Ghana was chosen because of its friendly business environment among other things.

She said the WECA headquarters would be located at MTN Ghana's head office in Accra and would be the administrative hub of the nine countries that constituted the WECA region.

Hitherto, the WECA regional office director, Mr. Christian De Faria, who is also Vice President of the region, did not have a stable office so had been moving from country to country to do his work, but he would now work from Ghana.

"The establishment of the office in Ghana provides enormous benefits not only to our business but to the country and we are excited to be hosting it," Ms Dumor said.

She said the benefits include leveraging economies of scale in respect of supply of telecoms infrastructure across the region, which will have positive implications for the national agenda to make Ghana the gateway to West Africa.

Ms Dumor said it would also create opportunities to apply Ghanaian knowledge, expertise and experience to other MTN operating units' technical and stakeholder engagement initiatives

However, since stumbling on this gruesome news, I have been filled with rage and fury. Therefore I decided to Google MTN a little to get to the root of what I will term 'a national insult.' According to ICT Statistics Newslog website “The West and Central Africa (WECA) region increased its subscriber base by 5% for the quarter driven mainly by Nigeria which accounts for 58% of the region's subscribers. Nigeria recorded a 5% increase in its subscriber base to 28.76 million mainly due to continued network rollout, innovative product offerings and the effectiveness of the distribution channels implemented earlier in 2009. Ghana maintained its market share and increased its subscriber base by 2,6% despite aggressive competitor activity. Both Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire increased their subscriber bases by 4% and 5% to 4.19 million and 4.21 million, respectively"

So the only way of paying Nigerians for this monumental loyalty is to take off job opportunities away from the country. According to 234next.com,MTN sacked 65 workers recently and I will not be surprised if this jobs are meant to be offshore to Ghana to beef up the WECA head office in Accra. I will not also be surprised if the call centres serving the close to 30 million Nigerian subscribers is located in these obscure WA countries. They blamed the sacking of workers on the current recession but whereas it was a way of shifting their WECA head office out of Nigeria
Instead of the ‘ingrate’ MTN creating jobs in Nigeria, they chose to engage in numerous dubious promos which common operation research tells me that it is the participants that contribute all that money that they give out to winners.MTN has also engaged in inconsequential corporate social responsibility whilst they are supposed to be making tangible contribution to the real sector of Nigerian economy by creating jobs out of the enormous profits they make from Nigeria.

Is this the way to pay back to close to 30 million subscribers in Nigeria. We are complaining of unemployment and the little way in which a corporate entity wants to contribute to our development is by overseeing the huge profits it makes in Nigeria from Accra because of what it termed “friendly business environment among other things." If MTN does not enjoy friendly business market in Nigeria why don't they pull out as we have other viable options such as Glo, Zain and Etisalat. How will a country that contributes over 50 percent of its regional profits and a major driver of it global market place as an unfriendly business climate? Why not pull out of the Nigerian market entirely. We have other investors who will be able and willing to jump at an offer to come into the Nigerian Telecoms industry in grand style.

Join the group ‘Boycott MTN:MTN Ungrateful to Nigerian Subscribers ‘ on Facebook, lets kick MTN out of Nigeria. Let us take of 10million subscribers off their base to frustrate them.

They are in business to make money. It is more expensive in Nigeria because of the electricity issue, we all know that. This is just yet another wake up call for us, why should they  incure the unecessary expense?

We are lucky, our issue is easily rectifiable and when we get constant electricity and a good road network across the country we will again begin to look like the place which makes most business sense to be located, in West Africa.

Its our own fault and we have almost left industry with no other choice but to relocate.

They are made a chunck of their money from Nigeria, Nigerians need this job and since we can do it, it's not asking too much for us to have it. Even if it's just 200 people that'll be employed in this office, we need this job badly. And because 60% of their revenue is this region is gotten from Nigeria, we deserve it.
Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by londoner: 12:48pm On Jan 12, 2010
Damilola, it is electricity among other things. Its a much bigger expense in Nigeria. We will still pay, but their costs will be less, meaning more profit for them. It makes good busines sense.

@Jrtorrents, I believe 58% of their profit in West Africa is from Nigerian subscribers, that cant be made to look like its insignificant. In that case it is the hand that has fed them in the West African market.

I must say though, MTN have a very bad reputation in Ghana, when I was there everyone complained about them.
Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by jrtorrents: 12:51pm On Jan 12, 2010

Every businessman do so because they want money, even American business men have decided to relocate their cooperate headquarters to Dubai. MTN moving their West African headquarters to Ghana doesn’t mean they have moved out of Nigeria altogether, and Ghanaian by the way.

Away from the fuss and hype of King Yar'Adua alleged death. The question of Nigeria's relevance is being played out by MTN.Read through the post and realize that it is a complete insult for MTN to locate their head office away from Nigeria because of what they call "friendly business climate" in Accra.Nigeria  contributes over 59percent of its total subscribes base in the region in question.Do we know how jobs these insane people have taken from us?

Why do we always like behaving like dictators? Companies have the right to locate their HQ where ever they feel is comfortable
It is up to the countries to attract investors not to dictate to them where they locate their business, it was the almost teh same thing when some niger delta ministers/elders said oil companies should be 'forced' to move their HQ into the Niger delta; where in the world are companies FORCED to locate their offices? their license was not based on them locating the HQ in nigeria so withrawing it based on that is totally out of the question!

how many jobs have they taken from us??
Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by Focusmind: 1:06pm On Jan 12, 2010
Nigerians should prevail on their government to put in the necessary infrastructure. Every business would like to be where the cost of production is cheaper; there is security of lives and property; no multiple taxation that would end up  in the bank account of corrupt politicians and civil servants.

Ghana is becoming a haven for businesses not because of market, but because of business friendliness and responsible goverment. Even Nigeria businesses are moving to Ghana. Before you know it, Globacom would equally relocates its headquarters to Accra and cite security and cost of business as being the reason.

We should be attacking the government and not the business people that are interested in protecting their investment. Has occured to you that MTN does not have permanent head office in Nigeria? They are just floating, making a lot of money and repatriating them to SA. They dont have confidence in Nigeria yet, in case anything happens, they  would just take off and probably sell off their mast base and generators. Thats all

Nigerians have to understand that the over N700 million MTN spends on energy is transferred directly to the subscribers. We contribute over 50 percent of subscribers in WA and about 25 of MTN subscribers base worldwide. It is MTN Nigeria and SA that are the pillars of the group. They recently sacked 65 workers and many more are to come when they become fully operational in their purported office in Accra. This economic sabotage. They make the money from Nigeria and over see it from Accra.Do you know how thousand above average corporate jobs that will be created to combat the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria. If the country host an unfriendly business climate they should pull out.
Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by londoner: 1:25pm On Jan 12, 2010
@Jrtorrents, can you provide the link for Glo's coming move to Ghana?

I did suspect you were Ghanaian. I disagree with you that Nigerians are jealous of Ghanaians, but we are aware there are a few things we can learn from your society and others.

I dont think Nigeria has any reason to be jealous because I was in Ghana not long ago. There are lots of foreign firms yes, but it actually saddened me how little participation Ghanaian companies have in their own market.  All I saw was Vodafone, Mtn, glo is getting ready to come in also. There was not a Ghanaian contingent of their equivalent. Vodafone had bought Ghana telecom and they actually disrespect their GH work force and have sacked very many. I'm sure you know the whole story. I saw the same with the banking sector, Barclays or Nigerian banks. Not really any  Ghanaian banks though  from what I saw.

Surely, Ghanaians should be able to take full advantage of their stable electricity and good business environment further than just being a destination for others to base.

i take it you don't know what a head office is.

the only thing nigeria loses with that head office is construction contracts for local consultants/contractors

the only additional employment opportunities you can expect from that office are maintenance (cleaners) receptionists  and security  . all that will happen is that ogas and their support staff will relocate to the central head office. end of story

do you think the new oceanic bank head office will mean new high paying corporate jobs?
Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by jrtorrents: 1:35pm On Jan 12, 2010
@londoner

I said Nigeria is jealous of Ghana because I can feel the hatred in some of the comments every time an issue of Ghana and Nigeria comes on this forum. Take the Obama issue for example. , Maybe am assuming wrongly but that’s the impression I get. And yes the Ghana government did sell Ghana Telecom to Vodafone. Primarily because the government was running the company at a loss, several people had to be sacked because the company was now 70% owned by Vodafone and they have to put in place measures to make their operations profitable rather to run it as a charity. I don’t even know if the Nigerian government has its own Telecommunications Company which operates mobile telephony.

Nigerians are miss guided and are so daft.Pick up a copy of Audacity of Hope and read chapter 5.You will understand that the US is concerned about 1000 jobs call it low paying or otherwise that is outsourced to mainly Asian countries. One cardinal points with which Obama rose to become president was this issue of jobs and he talks about t everyday. If you know what MTN is worth you will undertand the implication of a office that will oversee 30million Nigerian subscribers located in Ghana.

Read some exceprts from a major Ghana news website below

"The establishment of the office in Ghana provides enormous benefits not only to our business but to the country and we are excited to be hosting it," Ms Dumor said.

She said the benefits include leveraging economies of scale in respect of supply of telecoms infrastructure across the region, which will have positive implications for the national agenda to make Ghana the gateway to West Africa.

Ms Dumor said it would also create opportunities to apply Ghanaian knowledge, expertise and experience to other MTN operating units' technical and stakeholder engagement initiatives.

Ghana has been recognized at the MTN Group level for execution excellence in Marketing and Social Responsibility.

"Indeed the Ghana operating unit continues to support knowledge sharing in these key areas of the business," Ms Dumor said.

Are you getting in the clear at all?

Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by londoner: 1:50pm On Jan 12, 2010
@Jrtorrents, Glo is a Nigerian company. I didn't mean a state owned company, but  we are major players in our own market as well as others, to me this is very important.

Yes, the Obama issue did ruffle a few feathers with some Nigerians also puffed up a few Ghanaians. Hate is a strong word though, Nigerians dont hate Ghanaians at all. Anyway, thats not the point here.

It is a good thing for Ghana that some companies feel it a desired destination for business, but I dont think that has translated into the progress that some people purport it to be, because its not indigenous companies who are also able to take advantage of their favourable domestic climate. Therefore the most of the money made is leaving Ghana, and thats what people forget.

When I saw Nigerian banks, entertainment outfits, fast food joints, I wondered where are the Ghanaian counterparts of equal scale? I would like to see Ghanaian companies to rival MTN, rather than MTN simply chosing Ghana for its W. African head office, that is progress I would happily celebrate.
