Our Sun intensity in Naija is something else. A flat roof would provide little insulation from the
Sun. inside the building is guaranteed to be very hot 24/7.

You need a steep roof to avoid side effects of Naija rain/sun.

Flat roof is a very beautiful pattern but you must ensure that the structure is like 2 or 3 couches higher than normal structure if you want to enjoy it. I would advice you use similar pattern as some of our banks. The flat roof hidden in the tall structure.

It will sure save cost but doesn't have to be completely flat...you can raise it slightly a few inches at the middle to give it a different look

Feasible in the far north with low rainfall, but a disaster in the southern and central parts of Nigeria that get Heavy rainfall and must use some type of Gable roofing.

Besides why would anyone want to roof a proper house with Flat roofing?
Na warehouse you dey build abi residential building?
If you want to build , make sure you invest your best into your personal space and build properly, pricing not withstanding.

Very useful info to guide me in my next building at foundation stage now.
Thank you.

@OP: Well, there are good reasons why flat roofs are not common in these parts chief of which is the weather. Flat roofs don't perform well in climates where you have heavy annual rains. Other reasons why flat roofs are not common will be experience and availability of proper materials. By experience I mean not many people can truly solve the problems associated with flat roofs because it is not common - what is common is what people are used to and what people are used to is what they can do well. By "availability of proper materials" I mean things like sealants, surfacing materials, etc. Not many people will know what and what to use in creating a usable flat roof and even if you have a good idea what you need and HOW to go about it, "WHERE" will you get them?

Now, there will be others out there that will obviously know better than I do but the few pros and cons I can reel off the top of my head are:

Pros: Flat roofs yield more to aesthetics. You can have more interesting designs - especially modern (computer age) designs - out of flat roofs than with the usual pitched roof.
2. Flat roofs can be utilized for many purpose other than just to cover a house or lounge in the evenings. It's an extra space for gardening, hosting guests, sunning clothes, drying elubo, whatever...

Con. It is prone to leakages if not properly constructed thereby making the interior space underneath uncomfortable for normal living.
High cost of future maintenance.

In terms of aesthetics, a close alternative to flat roof is the low angle monopitch roof where the roof isn't decked to be used as extra space for activities but roofed with timber and roofing sheets. Here your pro will be cheap construction cost (usually far less than the normal Hip/Gable construction) and you don't have to fear maintenance as much as on flat roof. While your con can be hotter interior due to low roof volume. This can be combated though by several design decisions.

I am in the bid to roof my house and I am constrained to weigh different options due to cost implication. the cost I got for my roof design including facial wall for the roof is about 2m. However, I started thinking about flat roof designs may be it will be cheaper and beautiful.

My questions,
1. What are the pros and cons of it in Nigeria?
2. Is it cheaper to do and what volume of savings?
3. Is it affected by rain or sun reflection on the building?
4. Do Nigerians use or not?
5. If they don't why?

cheers

A quotation of 2 million.. . That must be a very big project..

Back to your question, we use flat roof and except you're NOT doing it to standard it shd cost more than the aluminum roofing... Can u share ur roof design?

Flat roof are used in areas of low precipitation, like the north.
Another disadvantage is the lack of buffer between the roof and the house. So heat is immediately transferred below, without the chance of dissipation.

You can use a mono pitch roof, that is a single inclined roof.
I reckon that may be cheaper, but not aesthetically pleasing,

Roofing orientation should align with the future, because solar panels can be installed on the roof in the future. Roofs that are steepy should be avoided.

Did i hear you say "why would anyone want to use flat roof"?
Am an architect, Flat roof is unique for me.

1. Is cheaper
2. It gives building a unique look
3. It controls the flow of zinc rain to one side, meaning u don't need to spend much on Water collectors.
4. It has low possibility of leakages because it has no complications.

For the leakage u pointed out, just use long span and avoid much space between the poleins so that the roof won't cave-in overtime.

Thanks

Thank you very much.. I've been reading people comment and I discover its either they lives in village or its something else because flat roof its in vogue in lekki right now, it makes structures more beautiful, I'm planning on using it at my site. In fact all new wema bank structures at the moment are flat roofs... Its cheaper and beautiful

Everything have merit and demerit.

FLAT ROOF MERIT
*cost of timber is lesser due to the the height of the said building but majorly it do comes in 3-5 ft. Although this depends on the design of the said structure.
*cost of the roof covering is also low compare to hipped roof design.
*labour cost also will be lesser a little.
*lastly its easier to climb if repair work is needed on top of it.

DEMERITS
*It doesn't reduce direct heat due to its height.
* same also as sound.
* its a bit difficult to carry out any work inside the roof if there need be due to its height.
*if the griadent is not well calculated and properly done, there will be a room for easy leakage of water

HIPPED ROOF MERIT
*it reduce heat
*it reduce sound
*it gives room to carry out any repair work properly inside it due to the height of the king pole
*if its done properly water will run down easily and fast which will not gives room for any leakage.

DEMERIT
* More costly than flat room
*if the height of the king pole is too high it will not be easy to climb in other to carry out any repair work on top of it.

Perhaps he means single-sloped roofs.

Flat (horizontal) roofs will only work in the driest deserts. Not even in northern Nigeria.

The trusses in a single-sloped roof are simple triangles and the king post (upright part of the triangle) can be as low as 1m to1.5m. Very economical on wood.

The roofing sheets will not be cut since the roof plan is just a rectangle, so no waste of roofing materials.

You will need to shade windows from sunlight though.

Placing hoods above windows or having trees (eg those tall slim trees) in the compound can provide shade.

Thanks, pls show sample of single slope roof for me to see. Regards

By flat roof do you mean roof top? I've always preferred rooftop cuz of the large space for lounging and laundry line. I like Cotonou architectural designs. Each house stands out unique from another. I don't know why we don't really see that in Nigeria.

Even Ghana has better designs ...

In Nigeria however, it's as if all the Houses are designed by the same architect ...no uniqueness

Flat roof is more economical than pitch roof. The amount of money spent on flat roof can be 20% compared to pitch roof. But the choice of roof covering sheet matters to prevent early rusting.

Hmmmmm..... Nice design. But heavy rainfall will be a huge challenge o. I would introduce a very slight slope and introduce high discharge pipes to remove water fast.

The slope is to ensure even a little water does not stay on.

thanks. The roof has a rise of 15' degree and there are large diameter pipes to collect and discharge the water. Flat roofs need a professionals to handle it, as there are so many details to attends to.

There are nice flat roof designs like this one I did recently...

But the major point everyone is missing is that it has to be incorporated in the design please of the building.

Not just because "I don't have money for Hip Roof"
