Guy U sef!!! Must U respond to his tantrums?
Staying in Kubwa has nothing to do with class by the way, Kubwa is one of the fastest growing satellite towns in Africa. Most peeps in town are relocating to Kubwa, areas like Arab road and FHA where they enjoy almost 24 hrs of uninterrupted power is giving high brow areas a run for their money, areas like Dawaki, News Engineering, Gwarinpa, Galadima/Charlie boy, and even Wuse and Garki area's......
But contrary where do U stay that U are receiving #300k for rent for a self con in Kubwa? Smh, the most for a self con in Kubwa is #250, unless some very few exceptionally awesome apartments in Arab road and FHA..... where they insist on #300k for a self con.
I stay in Arab road/Pipeline Extension and I pay #200k per year, though am planning on relocating to Brick city/ Urban shelter estates for a 1 bedroom flat at #500k because of the amenities and being that it's a virgin apartment.
Abuja is a great place to hustle only if you are determined to succeed and endure some huddles and temporal challenges and hitches.
Once you are settled in Abj, I bet U wouldn't want to leave Abj for any city in naija.
With as little as a #1,000 U could prepare a big bowl of stew or soup.
Essential commodities are quite affordable and transport fare quite fair too and job opportunities abound. U just need to be resilient and know why U are in Abuja.
According to my pals, I no come Abj to com count Bridges.................
Wow.. I love your analysis, was actually confused on where to serve later this year between Abuja and Lagos as I currently stay in Abuja too but with those your analysis I'm more than convinced Abuja is better if one can get a good job. I think I will consider staying just that my profession(law) thrive more in Lagos though.

You are welcome.
Its true Law thrives more in Lagos, but location aside, what matters most is your passion and penchant for success, Abuja is fast growing and has lot's of prospect, your network and connections matters a lot in this aspect. If you have a flair for the real estate as a lawyer you should be just fine in Abj.
Best wishes.

IN LAGOS, WE EVEN HAVE A MOBILE CCTV SURVEILENCE SYSTEM CAPABILITY, A THING EVEN THE OVER-HYPED ABUJA HAS.

Lagos state’s new surveillance system amplifies the need for a unified database

Titilola Oludimu May 3, 2017 0 Comments
IN: ViewPoint

Last year, the Lagos State government announced plans to install 13,000 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the state as well as 6,000 street lights and security sensors for surveillance and crime prevention and to improve the impact of emergency and disaster management across the state.

Part of this initiative is the mobile surveillance that has been deployed on the streets of Lagos in April. The anti-crime CCTV cameras– which is managed by the operatives of the Lagos state Rapid Response squad (RRS) with technical assistance from the Lagos state Response Unit (LRU)— while being test-run, recorded its first victory when the patrol team arrested a pickpocket at Oshodi.

Emmanuel Alowonle, the suspect arrested by the surveillance patrol team
While I commend the Lagos state government for finally making good on their promise and taking this laudable step to reduce the crime rates in Lagos, I could not help but wonder if the arrest of the pickpocket was sheer luck on the patrol team’s part.

It is one thing to detect a crime in action, it is another thing to apprehend the culprit especially if he is able to flee from the crime scene. What if the young man was able to avoid arrest at the time, wouldn’t that mean he would have gotten away with his crime?

If you have ever been mugged in Lagos or been the victim of a pickpocket, you know how quickly these guys can get away without a trail. How then can the police hunt them down and enforce justice?

It is the nature of the Nigerian government to put the cart before the horse. In 2010, the Nigerian government awarded a $470 million contract—the Chinese Exim Bank provided a $399.5 million loan-– to a Chinese company to install 2,000 CCTV cameras in Abuja and Lagos.

The project was to generate voice, video, and data, using the code division multiple access (CDMA) technology to tackle terrorism, armed robberies, kidnapping and other violent crimes that increasingly undermine security.

With so much money put to waste without putting the right things in place; it was no shocker that the project failed. The purpose for which the project was initiated was defeated; no crime has been detected using the facilities as it is applicable in other parts of the world. Most of the cameras installed have been vandalized due to their non-usage. The members of the Senate have been probing this project since 2014.

The need for a unified database

The Nigerian government adopts one form of technology or the other with no way of implementing it to its full potential. If we are going to adopt the use of surveillance systems, we might as well do it the right way by working on achieving a unified database first. In developed countries, criminals caught on surveillance cameras are apprehended because of the presence of a standard database.

The lack of a unified database in Nigeria is the root of some of our problems as a nation. I can get away with running a red light with a car with an unregistered number plate even with the new surveillance system. Even if the camera captures my face, there will no way to trace me because my data is here and there.

People can get away with using different names, addresses and other information for different registrations because they are aware that none of the agencies will make efforts to verify their data. How can crime be curbed in a system as disorganized as this?

If Nigeria had a unified database, we would not have ghost civil servants, police can easily solve crime cases because there will be a system in place that has the data of all residents of the country. Therefore, I do not see the purpose of the project being completely satisfied until we fix our database flaws.

Are Lagosians ready for a surveillance system?

As an optimist, I like to believe that people behind the surveillance operations

WE ALSO HAVE DNA AND FORENSIC CENTRE HERE IN LAGOS. THIS IS NOT JUST THE ONLY ONE IN NIGERIA, BUT ALSO THE ONLY ONE IN WEST AFRICA. WHEN THERE IS A RAPE CASE IN ABUJA, THAT WOULD ONLY BE SOLVED IN LAGOS. SHAME ONTO ABUJA!!!

LAGOS OPENS NIGERIA’S FIRST DNA FORENSIC LAB

Solicitor General & Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami (middle); Director, Citizen’s Mediation Centre (CMC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Odusanya (left) and Director, Administration & Human Resource, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Mariam Amodu during a press conference to commemorate the 2017 United Nations International Day of Peace, Citizen’s Mediation Centre Stakeholders’ Conference and Book launch at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, at the weekend.
…To render free legal services in commemoration of Int’l Day of Peace

The Lagos State Government has completed the construction of the first ever high-powered DNA Forensic Laboratory in Nigeria, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem has disclosed.

The State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode had last year approved the construction of the DNA forensic lab as part of the criminal justice sector reforms designed to solve crime through technology and fulfil an unmet need for DNA profiling which is a unique forensic technique that is now being used all over the world.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja to announce activities lined up by the State Government to commemorate the 2017 United Nations International Day of Peace, Kazeem said skeletal work had already commenced in the lab known as the Lagos State DNA Forensics Centre (LSDFC), and that it would be formerly commissioned in coming weeks.

Kazeem, who was represented at the briefing by the State’s Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Funlola Odunlami said the lab, among other initiatives of the State Government, was part of efforts geared toward enhancing peace in the State.

“The DNA forensic centre just opened this month. We are yet to commission it but it has been opened and it is a DNA crime forensic lab and at the same time, it is going to deal with other DNA matters like paternity issue. What we are doing now is skeletal work which we started this month,” Kazeem said.

He recalled that since 2007, the State Government through the Citizens’ Mediation Centre (CMC), an agency under the Ministry of Justice, commenced collaborations with the United Nations Information Office to mark the International Day of Peace as an annual event to propagate the ethos of peaceful co-existence among residents in the State, thereby educating and sensitizing the public on the need for peaceful co-existence and respect for human dignity to engender socio-economic growth.

“The Lagos State Government recognizes the fact that the State is the commercial nerve centre of the sub-Saharan Africa where all races converge for various purposes such as business, hospitality, tourism among others, and has put in place mechanisms that will foster development and promote economic activities in the State by instituting agencies that will attend to matters relating to Land Grabbers, Special Task Force, donation of police vehicles for security, introduction of DNA Forensic laboratory to archive blood samples of criminals, among others.

“All these actions are geared toward enhancing peace in Lagos State,” Kazeem said.

Speaking on activities to mark the 2017 edition of the day tagged “Together For Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity For All,” Kazeem said on September 18, there would be a Walk for Peace/Legal Clinic on Ikorodu Road precisely from Funsho Williams Avenue through Ojuelegba to Yaba, while on September 19, a second Walk for Peace/Legal Clinic will hold at Jubilee Under-bridge in Ajah through Ibeju Lekki Expressway and back to the bridge.

On the same day, Kazeem said the CMC will hold a Legal Clinic at both venues where free legal services and mediation services will be rendered to residents of the State, while on September 21, the 18th Stakeholders’ Conference and Book Launch will hold at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa to mark the day.

WE ARE ALSO BOOSTING OUR WATER TRANSPORT SYSTEM. KUDOS, LAGOS!

Boosting waterways transportation in Lagos

How can the waterways in Lagos be made safe and effectively utilised? These are the questions that begged for anwsers all through a stakeholders’ forum which set out to distill ideas on how to reposition the sector, writes ADEYINKA ADERIBIGBE.

The Lagos State Government and stakeholders at a forum on the waterways agreed that the sector had, for far too long, been comatose.

Since the Second Republic, when former Governor Lateef Kayode Jakande intoduced in the state the Baba Kekere and Ita Faji ferries, which brought a new lease of life to people in many riverine communities along the state’s coastline, especially around Mile 2 to Marina, Ipakodo and Ebute in Ikorodu. Lagosians are worried because the feat achieved by the state in the 80s was left to rot.

From a sector that hit about three million passenger traffic yearly, up to the late 80s, the waterways traffic has dropped to about one million passenger per annum, with hardly any presence whatsoever in goods/cargo freighting.

But Governor Akinwunmi Ambode seems set to play big in waterways transportation. With 54 percent of its mass covered by water, the state has a very strong comparative advantage.

At the stakeholders forum last week, government sources said the governor is determined to replicate his imprint on the waterways, as he achieved appreciable success on the road.

The need for the state to deepen its involvement in the waterways is not far-fetched.

With a population put by the state’s Director of Transport Policy Dr Taiwo Salam, at 25 million, Lagos, arguably, is bigger than countries such as Ireland with a population of (4.773 million), New Zealand (4.693 million), or Australia (24.13 million), or some West African countries such as Togo (7.606 million) or Cote d’Ivoire (23.7 million), though tagging behind Ghana with a population of 28.21 million.

However, while most of these countries have out-paced Lagos with robust and thriving inter-modal transportation, (road, air and water), Lagos is still tied to primordial ways with 95 percent of goods and passenger traffic relying on road.

According to statistics from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, (LAMATA), while the road element remains the heaviest and most popular means of transportation, waterways, despite its huge potential, accounts for about one percent passenger traffic in the state.

The result is a gripping daily traffic congestion, which is gradually making travels on the state roads a nightmare. For instance, Apapa, a scenic area up till late 90s, has become a no-go area as because of traffic congestion that saw bumper-to-bumper parking of containerised trailers and petroleum tankers on every inch of roads in the area, also stretching from the Apapa ports up to Ikorodu Road.

To relieve the roads, the other modes of transportation, especially the waterways, the government said, must work; and to work, the government must have effective control of the waterways. That was the message of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Managing Director Oluwadamilola Emmanuel.

Emmanuel said the agency had been encumbered from generating appreciable revenue since a High Court impeded its sail in March, 2014, until the judgment was set aside in July, this year; a verdict that was validated by another Federal High Court last Friday.

Emmanuel said the forum was to drum stakeholders support for a “safe, clean and prosperous waterways.

According to the LASWA chief, government is not interested in driving any operator out of business. But all operators must continue to support it and join hands with it to build a virile sector.

“LASWA as the inland waterways regulator for Lagos State would continue its role of ensuring safety and the enforcement of the various initiatives and interventions of the government on the waterways, des
