My own favourites change from time to time. In the early 2000s, I longed to read Festus Adedayo of Tribune, later I itched to read Casmir Igbokwe of Punch, and as at September 2009, this was my Top 10:

MY TOP TEN NIGERIAN COLUMNISTS

1, SIMON KOLAWOLE [THISDAY]
Although he once uttered a statement that drew my ire, but I give it to him as Nigeria's most unbiased, incisive columnist today. My weekend is not complete without grabbing Thisday to see what Simon has for me.

2, AZUBUIKE ISHIEKWENE [PUNCH]
It's a pity I hardly read Punch these days and I have not been following Azu's writings again. But what I have read from his column when punch was my favourite, plus the few articles of his I still come across by chance, he is a great analyst with sharp pen and unbiased mind.

3, MAHMUD JEGA[DAILY TRUST]
This guy stunned me with his writings and one of the few people that demystified my uninformed perception of Hausa/Fulani folks as intellectual laggards(I'm embarrassed I ever held that silly thought). Combining word artistry with breathtaking analysis, he is one of the reasons I still open Daily Trust website everyday.

4, IJEOMA NWAGWUGWU[THISDAY]
While others write more on the political side of our national life, Ijeoma writes on teh economic side more often. Another Thisday columnist I hardly miss. Although we hold extremely opposite opinion on the Sanusi debate but I give it to her, she is a good analyst.

5, REUBEN ABATI[GUARDIAN]
Reuben is perhaps the most popular columnist in Nigeria today. I'm not much of his fan as he is too radical for my liking, but you can't just ignore his writings. The Abuja land-gate further soils his name, but there is no disputing the fact that Reuben is a very sound analyst. His creativity with words is another endearing asset of his.

6, CASMIR IGBOKWE [PUNCH]
Oh, I'm missing my Punch friends! Casmir's analyses are another unputdownable pieces. There was a time he was writing his column from Cardiff when he was undergoing a course there and his column was retitled 'MUSINGS FROM CARDIFF'. I remember teh piece he did on one popluar Cardiff professor taht rides bicycle to office. I hardly follow him on weekly basis again, but if he's still the Casmir I read till a couple of years ago, he will still makes my favourite list.

7, YOMI ODUNUGA [formerly PUNCH, now DAILY INDEPENDENT]
When Punch was my favourite, Yomi was another columnist that made my weekends with his column, KNUCKLES. Very incisive and analytical. He has now crossed over to The Nation (or is Daily Independent?), where he continues his KNUCKLES column, and I still see his writings but they don't appeal to me again, maybe because of teh quality of the printing of Daily Independent.

8, MUHAMMAD HARUNA, [THE NATION and DAILY TRUST]
I got to know Haruna late, just two years ago, but I have known much about him, especially from the war of opinions/history he and Dare Olatunji(another senior journalist and 'The Nation' columnist) fought late last year. He is another columnist I follow around. He is perhaps the most veteran print journalist from the North(He's from Niger state). I like his diction and grasp of history. I also like his independent-mindedness. He writes what he feels is correct, even if he is the only Nigerian holding that opinion. Sanusi, the current CBN governor, doesn't agree with him on most issues and, like Simon Kolawole, Sanusi had picked holes in their writings in the past. His minus is being close to IBB and maybe Buhari.

9. IS'HAQ MODIBBO KAWU, DAILY TRUST
This Ilorin guy is another columnist whose column I hardly miss. Another fine writer.

10. JOSEPH ADEYEYE, PUNCH
A new generation columnist with Punch. When I used to 'eat and drink' Punch, he wasn't a columnist with them then. I first knew him when he quoted the nairaland topic UGLY BRITAIN in his column sometime last year. Since then, I follow his writings. A fine analyst and tries to be as objective as possible.

Things have changed between then and now, and today, I go like this:

1, DARE OLATUNJI, THE NATION: I make down payment for my vendor for The Nation of Monday-Friday everyweek for no reason than their famed commentariat. I only read teh back page and I have hill of The Nation in my sitting room. Segun Olatunji, who writes on Tuesdays, leads the pack. The guy is not only a wordsmith, he has a great grasp of events. He is a veteran, having been in the business of column writing since early 80's. He is a grandmaster.

2, SEGUN GBADEGESIN, THE NATION:: He writes on Fridays in The Nation. The professor of philosophy is also a grandmaster. Anytime he does satire, it is unputdownable. Opalaba is his usual character when he adopts the style. He used to be a Prof of Philosophy in Ife before moving to USA for further teaching.

3, MOHAMMED HARUNA, THE NATION, DAILY TRUST: Mohammed Haruna, who writes on Wednesdays in The Nation & Daily Trust, is the most controversial columnist in Nigeria today. If every other commentator goes this way, he goes teh other way. I may disagree with him in so many issues, I respect his independent-mindedness. He doesn't hide his opinion even if he is the only one holding it in Nigeria.

4, TUNDE FAGBENLE, THE PUNCH: I have been following him for over a decade. He stopped writing and went to contest Osun Central Senatorial seat under NCP in 2003. He returned to writing a couple of years ago. Tunde is also good with words, and has a good grasp of history. He is a radical.

5, REUBEN ABATI, GUARDIAN Abati is easily the most popular columnist in Nigeria today, but I don't know why I'm no big fan of his. Maybe because of the Abuja landgate. The only thing I enjoy in his writings are the humours.
Re: Who Is Your Best Newspaper Columnist In Nigeria Ever? by Jarus(m): 9:09pm On Jun 21, 2010
6, BISI OJEDIRAN, THISDAY: This man is very good. Fine analysis in fine grammar. He is also a master of satire.

7, MAHMUD JEGA, DAILY TRUST: Mahmud, younger brother of Attahiru Jega of INEC, is another columnist I respect. He is wide-read, and also good with words. He is however not as veteran as the above.

8, SIMON KOLAWOLE, THISDAY: I hardly find Simon interesting these days again. He has dropped from being my favourite. He is however very objective and hardly carried away by sentiments

9, IJEOMA NWOGWUGWU, THISDAY: Ijeoma is also good with words. She has a good grasp of economics, and deploys it in her writings.

10, CASMIR IGBOKWE:; Casmir is still trying. He makes my list of Top 10.

My best columnists come from The Nation newspapers and I have a hard time saying who is the best. However, my Top 10 in no particular order are:
1. Sam Omatseye- The Nation on Mondays- He is an assistant Professor with a university in the USA and the current Media Merit award winner. He writes best when he is angry.
2. Pius Adesanmi- He writes for Next and Sahara reporters. He uses vernacular and humour to drive home his points. I still can't forget the article he wrote on his father and how he encouraged him to take to reading. That article brought tears to me ears especially when he mentioned publications/literature long forgotten such as Pacesetters Series: Evbu My Love, Too Cold for Comfort, etc.
3. Olatunji Dare- Also of the Nation newspapers. His acerbic tongue and command of the language is second to none.
4. Professor Segun Gbadegesin- Also of the Nation newspapers, his friday column is a reader's delight, especially when he uses 'Opalaba' parody.
5. Mohammed Haruna- Also of the Nation newspapers. I used to gloss over his comments with the feelings that he is a northern irredentist. However, I now know he is one of the most balanced writers in Nigeria. You either hate him with a passion or love him with a passion.
6. Usoro Usoro- He used to write for The Sun before he took up an appointment with Akpabio in Akwa Ibom. He is the greatest writer of sattire in Nigeria till date. He is now a hatchet man for Godswill (Devil's wish) Akpabio- what a pity.
7. Femi Adesina- His e-mail is the easiest to remember- kulikulii@yahoo.com. He makes writing look so easy and interesting. All his articles make sense. He has a way of making complex topics an interesting read.

8.Funke Egbemode-She writes for the Sun. Her articles on Sunday Sun backpage and Intimate Affairs in Saturday Sun are usually laced with humour.
9. Mike Awoyinfa-Used to be MD of the Sun. He can write on almost any topic.
10. Reuben Abati- Almost everyone agrees he is one of the very best.[color=#006600][/color]

columnist??
i would have said Azu but because of the bribery scandal he was involved in he is out.
I would also have said Uncle Tunde Fagbenle but also reading his last column in which he was joyfulling reeling out the names of dignitaries (politicians that have ruined this country) except Prof Wole Soyinka that would grace his book launch and this also made me loose my respect for him.

all these so-called columnists are not to be so respected and trusted

though i like
DARE OLATUNJI, THE NATION
MUHAMMAD HARUNA, [THE NATION
Professor Segun Gbadegesin
Sam Omatseye- The Nation
