Professor" Dora Akunyili
Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications

“I came down to my village to join my family, relations and well wishers to pay my last respect to my late sister Gloria but unknown to me, my family and invited guests, a large number of thugs loyal to Prof. Charles Soludo were carefully organized to disrupt my participation in my sister’s burial ceremony. I have never seen the number of thugs I saw on Friday in any event. The thugs were also instructed to embarrass my invited guests. As you may be aware, Prof. Charles Soludo is marrying my late elder sister’s daughter Nonye. So we are in-laws, but since he lost the last gubernatorial election in Anambra State, Prof. Soludo has singled me out as the source of his failure to win the election, and he convinced my sister to believe that I was the cause of his failure. All efforts by people to make him understand that I alone cannot make him Governor have failed. So he brought that anger, grudge and frustration to the burial of his mother in-law who is also my elder sister. All arrangements made by me and my other siblings to receive guests at Isuofia, where my late sister was residing (which is also Soludo’s village) were vandalized by Soludo’s hired thugs. They followed this up with text messages of blackmail to my guests, friends and well wishers. When the environment in Isuofia became too insecure, tense and hostile, I quietly relocated to my father’s compound at Nanka which is few kilometres away just to avoid trouble. But Soludo’s thugs also trailed us to my own village Nanka to commence trouble but the security agents quietly dismissed them.

I want to remark that my late sister Gloria was a very peaceful, Godly and well brought up woman. While she was alive, I enjoyed her love and friendship as a sister no matter what Soludo and his hired thugs think. Because of this, even in death, I will do nothing to dishonour her because what Soludo and his thugs has done is to dishonour her but God has taken control. I therefore wish to thank all my invited guest for their understanding and the church for their prayers and co-operation.”

"Professor" Charles Soludo
Immediate past Governor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)

Akunyili, youths clash at sister’s burial •Police, monarch avert crisis
| Print | E-mail
Written by Sam Nwaoko, Awka
Sunday, 18 July 2010
THE prompt intervention of the police in Anambra State and the traditional ruler of Isuofia community in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, Igwe Okpara Unegbu, saved what would have marred the burial of the elder sister of the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, the late Mrs. Gloria Uzoamaka Ezenwanne, at the weekend.

Sunday Tribune gathered at Umeze village in Isuofia that angry youths had gone to the venue prepared by the minister to host her guests after the burial of her sister and dismantled the predominantly white canopies mounted at the place.

The deceased was also an in-law of the former Central Bank Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

According to sources, the youth were displeased by what they alleged was the impropriety of the parallel reception arranged by the minister since she was allegedly not in talking terms with the woman, who was the mother of Dr. Nonye, the wife of Professor Soludo, until her death.
Community sources also said that the youth expressed displeasure with Professor Akunyili over what they claimed was an act against their custom and that she should have joined hands with the sister’s family to host a reception.

Following the confirmation that the minister was planning to host a parallel ceremony at the home of the neighbours of the Ezenwanne’s, youths of the community gathered and dismantled the canopies in the early hours of the day as the relations of the late Mrs. Ezenwanne went to retrieve her body from the mortuary.

The act incurred the wrath of the two mobile policemen and soldiers said to be in the advance team of Professor Akunyili.

The two mobile policemen, Ajih Ahmadu and Levi Adekwu, and three soldiers were said to have caught up with four of the youth dismantling the canopies and allegedly beat them to stupor, thereby heightening tension in the community that morning.

Information got to the Aguata Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Illiya Madaki, who was said to have arrived promptly at the area in company with some senior police officers.

While the requiem mass was going on at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, arrived at the church and consulted with Mr. Madaki, on ways to resolve the matter before the end of the church service to avoid crisis during the reception.

After getting some community leaders together inside the church premises, Oshodi-Glover allegedly consulted with the monarch of the town for guidance on the tradition of the people on such issues.
Sources told Sunday Tribune that Igwe Unegbu told Glover that whenever a married woman died, her immediate family comprising the husband and children would be the chief mourners and therefore host all other relations and friends who would all be guests to the family.

He declared that Dora Akunyili, who hails from Nanka with the deceased but married in Agulu, had no business trying to host her own guests in a parallel tent, saying traditionally, Akunyili and other sisters and brothers of the deceased were supposed to witness the internment of their sister and later go back to Agulu or anywhere else to host their guests if they so desired.
Following this, an announcement was made that Professor Akunyili’s guests would be hosted at their father’s compound in Nanka, about 10 minutes drive from Isuofia.

Reacting, Professor Akunyili denied that she was not in speaking terms with her late sister, pointing out that she had chosen the venue for convenience, saying there was nothing wrong in hosting her own visitors at a venue of her choice.

The minister said the story was being spread by somebody to tarnish her image politically.

She said she wouldn’t know why the canopies at the venue she chose were dismantled by the youth, adding that she did not know what happened there between her security aides and the youth.

In his sermon at the funeral mass, Bishop Amatu described Madam Gloria Ezenwanne as a virtuous woman who lived in the service of God and prayed for the repose of her soul in eternity while the Information Minister said she was deeply pained when she was told of her sister’s death and thanked Dr. Nonye and her husband Professor Soludo for taking good care of the deceased while she was alive.

In his own remark, Soludo lamented the poor medical facilities in the country, disclosing that several Nigerian hospitals gave the deceased a clean bill of health until they took her abroad to discover that she had a serious health challenge. He said that though he was an in-law to the deceased, having married her first daughter, Madam Gloria had been his de-facto mother for over 20 years because he lost his own mother while he was just eight years, while Emeka, the Chief mourner said his mother gave everything she had to the service of God and humanity.

Among the dignitaries that attended the occasion were two former vice presidents, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and his deputy, former governor Chris Ngige, several senators including Annie Okonkwo and Emma Anosike and House of Representatives members from Anambra and other states of the nation.

Others include Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other party leaders among numerous others.

UGH!!!! Useless jobless youths. What concerns them with the death and burial of a woman that is not even their relative? OMG it seems like death and burial always brings out the worst in our people. However way the sisters or brother or even children of the late person want to conduct themselves and the burial should be their business. Only a jobless man will leave his house to fight another man's battle. Nde nzuzu.

Following reports of fracas at the burial of Dora Akunyili's sister in Anambra she sent out this press statement from her father’s compound at Nanka, Anambra State. See Dora Akunyili's statement below:

This above pre-statement by SR has got me suspicious and thinking. Dora a minister of info, releases a press statement and the only publishers are the much despised SR.
I'll wait until I get a report on one of the regular news outlets.

I am very very disappointed. I love Dora but think that she most times acts without thinking and if i may respectfully say, lacks tact and decorum. As Nwada Igbo " a daughter of Igbo Land" she should know and respect the tradition and not let power rule her sense of judgment. Traditionally Soludo and his guests should be welcomed as inlaws by the deceased's children and her husband if he is still alive. They should bring drinks, cow and yam which will be accepted and a goat given to him in return. He should be entertained by the family. In most cases where such in laws are people of means, they give the family money for the food and drinks in order to ensure that their guests are well looked after. Female members of the deceased's family usually sit inside round the bed as umu ada "daughters of the land" and be entertained by the daughters of the deceased under the supervision of sisters like Dora. So frankly speaking Dora got it completely wrong. If she had special guests to entertain, the deceased's children should be informed and special arrangements will be made for them. Dora can always give them more to put towards their entertainment. She must act sensibly or otherwise lose relevance. On the other hand i think that she has her eyes on the governorship of Anambra State and Soludo is doing his political best to put her where he thinks she belongs. Lets watch and see how it ends.

Dede, I think I'm Eskimo. *mschew*
What tradition are u talking about? The problem is that some of our people poke their noses into other people's business in the name of tradition. Like I said, what concerns those hoodlums? When its time for them to stand up for what's right dem go disappear. In many of our communities when a father dies people out of the moon land like vultures in the name "Umu nna" to make silly demands and even snatch properties of the deceased away from the wife and children all in the name of tradition. A co-worker of mine lost his brother in a violent way and when he and his siblings went back home to bury their late brother bunch of "umu nna" came out making monetary demands. The ones from abroad were told to pay higher fees. They queried them and the "umunna" said their fee was higher coz they came from America. What nonsense? Their own brother was killed and instead of coming to console the family these crooks came to demand that they make it rain $$ on them. Na dem lose person? Unfortunately for them one of the brothers who took no nonsense opened fire on them. All the trouble makers took to their heels and they quietly buried their brother and left the village.

Re: Dora Vs Soludo. This Is Hmmmm: Help! Charles Soludo Sent Thugs To Disrupt My Sis by udezue(m): 12:11pm On Jul 19, 2010
Onlytruth, its not like I don't respect tradition but when people introduce criminality or become way too imposing on immediate family of the deceased who are feeling the pain the most than any outsider then I'm done respecting or obeying anything. My friend have told me stories about relatives she never knew came around demanding keys to her father's property in the name of protecting it for their "dearest brother" while the wife was still alive. They demanded the man be buried at a date suitable for them without recognizing the man has kids and family that want to bury him asap so they could head back to school and figure out how to take care of themselves and their mother, the kids refused and buried the man, kept all the keys and documents to themselves and left. The Nigerian corruption have sipped so deep into some of our communities and they use the name "tradition" to promote their criminal act. How can youths who are not even related to the deceased question the relationship btwn the sisters before the death? Even if they were sworn enemies its still a family matter that deserves no outside opinion or judgment. Nothing wrong with tradition but let's do it with respect

Dora is a woman afterall. Women are often given to unnecessary emotional outbursts rather than to reality. So, no blames to Dora for behaving true-to-type, running her mouth in the press. A girl I know once oversped while driving. She was stopped by the cop and instead of braving it and taking her booking with equanimity, she went on her knees begging to be forgiven. WTF! She could afford the ticket money afterall and she knew it was illegal overspeeding. Also, I once sent my girl-friend packing for telling her friends that I do not let her sleep at night, that I ask to do TDB. hahahaha. I was like, why the hell would she do that when she enjoined it while it lasted? But then, I realized she is a woman and they must always talk, even if for the mere sake of talking. I am sure Dora tells her friends how her hubby fcucks her at night. Women!!!!

True. I was genuinely fond of Dora because I thought she was one of the detribalised and progressive leaders who can take Nigeria where she needs to go . We all backed her , after NAFDAC, for leadership greatness. We are now seeing , like "pregnancy" , her real character she could not keep concealed . She is a total fraud more concerned about her image/position/political survival than with the notion of genuine service to her nation.
