A few years back I met a guy named Matt who was from Chester in England and he was telling me a bit about English fans in his town & their love for football. How they’d all be dressed up & fanatically cheer on their team in the stadium.

One thing that I found interesting in sharing this story with me was the fact that when their team had lost a match, many of the fans would just zip up their coats & kinda hide their allegiance out of fear of being ridiculed or harassed by the winning team’s fans. I guess that’s one way of preventing hooliganism.
It’s easy to be critical of Matt but how often have you & I been guilty of being the best fans in the world when our team’s won but almost ashamed & sulking away when they lost? Probably more often than we care to admit.

Well, in good times or bad times, it seems the apostle Paul couldn’t care less of being ridiculed, harassed or about ‘hooliganism’, because Paul had a loyalty that was most definitely out in the open—a loyalty to Jesus Christ. In fact, he underlined this sentiment by telling the church in Rome, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” (Rom. 1:16).

In good times or in bad times he remained a loyal & committed fan because he knew that gospel of Jesus Christ was “the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes”. His life was a testimony of this salvation / transformation & he just couldn’t & wouldn’t keep it to himself.

Is your loyalty to Jesus on public display? If not, our loyalty to Jesus should be seen and heard in our lives.
