I might be wrong, but I doubt it! Kinda noticed that the Yoruba language is the most spoken language in Nigeria and abroad besides English lang. Don't know the population of this tribe, but boy, they're every where!

Even the Nollywood Igbo superstars tend to speak this language too. Saw some of them in some Yoruba movies; they're very fluent in speaking it. Back in London and the USA, their govts are proposing introducing this language to their syllabuses.

Again, I noticed that any Nigerian Artists that does'nt include Yoruba in the lyrics of their songs is like an accident waiting to happen. Although Timaya's got his own style, he's beginning to see why he must atleast put some of the Yoruba lyrics in his song.

Why Yoruba?

@poster

Yes, the Yorubas are the dominant Nigerian tribe abroad (West) followed by the Igbos.  There are 3 dominant tribes in 9ja and they are Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.  However, It seems like you have never been to 9ja or at least travel around the country.

Most foreigners especially in the west think the Yorubas are the most dominant tribe in 9ja, mainly because of their large population in that part of the world.  However, what most do not know is that the most dominant  tribe in 9ja are the Hausas, hence they hold immense political power in the country. Their language is not only the most widely spoken in Nigeria , but in west Africa. The language is spoken in countries like Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Ghana, Sudan, Gabon, CAR, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso,Togo, Equatorial Guinea and Algeria. Hence, international  broadcasting media  like VOA, BBC, Radio France, Deutchwelle Radio, Iran Radio, Radio Moscow, and Radio Beijing broadcast their programs in Hausa, but  non has Yoruba or Igbo language in their foreign language broadcast.  In terms of sheer numbers, Hausa thus ranks as one of the world's major languages, and its widespread use in a number of countries of West Africa makes it probably the single most useful language to know in that region

The Hausas are majority Muslims due to their long historical contacts/relation with the Arabs. Their emigration pattern to abroad is more towards the Middle East, and most are not very expose to western lifestyles. The Yorubas and Igbos on the other hand, are majority Christians due to their long historical contacts/relation with the Europeans. Their emigration pattern to abroad is more towards the West, hence are more expose to western lifestyles.

Hope this info helps.

There are two major reasons for this.

1) No doubt the Yoruba tribe socialize a lot compared to the other tribes.

Yorubas can party on any reason.
A real yoruba wouldn't be happy of the fact that he/she wouldn't be able to wine and dine at his/her burial party.
    Yorubas love music.

2) Lagos being a commercial mega city, former state capital and dominated by yorubas (indigenous tribe of Lagos) ; these makes lagos the entertainment FACTORY and MARKETing hub in Nigeria- any musician who wants to make it must do business in Lagos -  like it or not.
Adding yoruba lyrics in today's nigerian music makes the album/artiste accepted and popular.

people dont seem to notice that nigerian music is a mix of various languages.d banj,9ice,2face et al have mixed ibibio, igbo, hausa and yoruba one way or the other in their music but the dominant language is the naija/ghana pidgin.the most loved is the wafi version while the funniest is the calabar and hausa/indian/lebanese version.

The poster with the nonsense above is a disgrace to nairaland. I maintain that the quality of nairaland is going down the drain or else, how can someone without any good knowledge of Nigeria be making such assertions as the above. Does DBanj not sing in Igbo despite not sing in Igbo despite the fact he is non-Igbo, Zaki Azzay sings in Hausa despite the fact he is not Hausa. The poster should be praising Nigerians who are intelligent enough to speak many languages instead of worshipping block heads who can not learn other peoples language.

Westernisation started on both fronts. It only seems like Yoruba is the fastest learnt because of Lagos, but in the East Igbo is dominant and in the North Hausa is dominant (including Abuja), just like in the Northeast Kanuri is dominant. Anybody talking about a certain ethnic groups and how it is "so dominance" in the whole of Nigeria, apart from the dominance of it's elites, is chatting trash.

And WHO IS THAT FOOL! THAT SAID D'BANJ SINGS IN IGBO Because of "igwe" do you think you can communicate with him with igbo? He did that song with the help of don jazzy! Not the love for the language. But others can't help it but use it,can't you see Naeto-c "kini" big deal,Akomitipoju, D'prince-Omoba,even if it is one yoruba word they still use like Bigiano Shayo. The only person i like is Nigga raw he tries a lot with igbo, but still he did "Kogbadun" though- i like it when they speak it but people just like the yoruba way alot of tribes find it easier dressing like yorubas which is more interesting you seldom find yorubas dress the way others do may be for costume use sha! But me i dont fuckin care what you speak as far as you are Nigerian. That's why i like Chinamanda Achebe,Wole soyinka, Okocha,Oliver de coque cuz they boosted Naijas fame world wide! I fink yoruba and igbos remains the best in Naija because we have seen a lot of great people from them No Offense to tribes i still love you all Peace

Uhm, sorry to disappoint you, but the number one reason Igbo musicians play up Yoruba culture is Ego. Yoruba culture is great, fair enough, but money is even greater when it comes to business.

And as for the Yoruba dressing, you mean 'agbada'? People dress like that from Western Nigeria to Senegal, and it's their traditional wear.

Of course they do, but that's appreciating culture, it doesn't mean Yoruba people are their lords and masters, plus Lagos plays a very large role in this situation. If you visit Kano, the majority of the people there probably can't even speak English, let alone Yoruba, and if you go to Owerre where they're more exposed, yet the language of everything except some parts of school is Igbo, in these places someone who has never been anywhere else in Nigeria will say they dominate. This is not the first post dealing with this whole dominance issue.

Just finished doing my research, The Hausa's dominate the political scenery (Abuja as their power seat) but lack world wide acceptance because of the violence associated with them. Majority of the other African states where Hausa is being spoken are Muslim speaking countries. Go to developed world, the first Nigerian or african language recognised by these people is the Yoruba language.

See I really don't care about where anyone of you comes from, just making a point. Even in United States where we have a large number of the Igbo people, Yoruba language is still well spoken and heard. Travel to the Uk, same thing, Canada, Australia, and most of the well organised countries, except ofcourse countries like Germany, India, China where the Igbos tend to find refuge (I heard its because of their dodgy business.)

No sorry you're talking rubbish as well, and you're relying on hearsay and stereotypes judging by the last sentence in your write up, which discredits everything you wrote. I don't know any other African language that is more recognised than Swahili, Yoruba or any other language doesn't come close to its popularity, so much so that people of different ethnic backgrounds adopt Swahili names like Keisha. Canada recognises both languages, please don't make up facts, all the countries you posted as being dominated by the Yoruba actually recognise the Igbo language, and many of the older generations of those countries recall and can remember the 'Ibos of the Biafran war', and by the way was it Yoruba speakers that the US Army encouraged to join their military? No, it was Igbo speakers, so you're wrong.

You all have spoken well. I have travelled to majority of the eastern part of Nigeria and the dorminant language there is igbo. Infact, there is no other language there outside igbo as you have to protest before anyone will talk to you in english. same thing is applicable in the western and northern parts of the country. Even in the smaller ethnic group states of akwa ibom the same happens. In actual fact, no other language dorminates the other-everyone rules his territory which explains why yoruba is spoken is Lagos. My friends who did teaching practice in Lagos confirm that there are kids in Lagos who can't speak english even though they live in a cosmopolitan environment. This is replicated across the country. As for abroad i don't have any facts on that. Musicwise one would find out that the yorubas like to sing in their language and the music is popular only in the west where they dorminate so the younger yoruba artist now mix english and yoruba which makes their music accepted by others. Same thing happens in the movie industry where yoruba movie is seen only in the west ( the west is less than one-quarter of Nigeria)
