The Lagos State Government, through the Multilingual Centre, has introduced a new Quiz Competition to the extra-curricular activities of Secondary Schools with the maiden edition of a French quiz competition tagged: “A LA CONNAISSANCE DE LAGOS” - meaning “How Much of Lagos Do You Know”, held at the Immaculate Heart Comprehensive School Hall, Maryland.

18 Schools drawn from the Six Education Districts competed at the Grand Finale of the maiden edition of the competition which saw Sito Gbetrome Senior Secondary School, Seme, Badagry winning the star prize, while Ikeja Senior High School and Badagry Grammar School came 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule commended the ingenuity of the Multilingual Centre for the initiative, saying that the quiz would serve as an impetus for the students as well as endear them to learning other languages.

The Deputy Governor, represented at the event by the Director, Basic Education Services, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr. Abiodun Oni, noted that the new competition was meant to redirect the minds of the pupils/students towards keeping abreast of happenings in their immediate environment, have a sense of history and develop penchant for reading wider to broaden their knowledge.

She recalled that, in realisation of the importance of French as a major lingua franca in the world, the Lagos State Government had collaborated with the TV5 World Service, a multimedia platform for the teaching and learning of French Language, to accredit the Multilingual Centre as an International Language Resource Center; 400 French teachers were trained to take full advantage of the terms of certification.

Adebule, therefore, encouraged the students to intensify their study of the French language in order to boost effective communication, commerce, socio-cultural interaction and national security management with the francophone neighbouring countries, adding that French language graduates stand a better chance of employment by multinational companies and organisations.

Earlier, the Director Multilingual Center, Mrs. Taiwo Haastrup said the State Government introduced the centre to serve as a platform that helps French language teachers and students enhance their oral proficiency and efficiency for effective service delivery.

She appreciated the government for its efforts towards the education sector and urged the students to take advantage of the French programme offered by the Centre.

French is an international language and is spoken in many countries in the world. African language ends in Africa while French, English and other global language are used for trade and business. It is rare to trade in African language

Abeg French is not a True international language. Do not be deceived.
If the basis of your rebuttal on the non-viability of African languages is based on that fact that they are spoken just within Africa, then how many real countries of any significant global weight outside Africa speak French apart from France and adjoining regions?

It is rare to see trade being conducted in African languages because Africans have refused to elevate the status of their national languages, but keep blaming colonialism, even now that they have the freedom - LASG is still passing some stupid law about one moribund french language.

What LASG did was the best. Africans don't have a common language that binds the continent till date that is why we still rely on colonial language. No tribe is ready to shift ground for a major one to strive. French languages are spoken outside the shores of Africa. In Europe, French is the official language in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Monaco and Switzerland. In North America we have Canada and Haita. In Africa we have more countries speaking it compare to English. West Africa alone has about 11 countries speaking it. Nigeria is surrounded by French speaking countries hence French was chosen by Lagos State Government. This language is learn side by side with English and Yoruba

All countries with neighboring regions adjoining FRANCE, Just as we also have trans-national African languages that cuts across borders.
I don't care about how any countries speak French in West Africa. All I care about is languages that have real international clout, and the promotion of African lingos.

More than 80% of Global business is conducted in English. English is the language of International Science, Aviation and Tech amongst many other international endeavours.... Spanish and German are still there to fill part of the remaining 20%, tell me where French which you seem to respect so much comes into the picture? The only relevance of french is brought about by the people speaking it in Africa, otherwise there is no difference between it and ordinary Italian or Dutch.

Also, how are there more French speaking people in Africa than English? Show the figures pls.
