Nigeria needs to create 25 million jobs within the next ten years if it wants to tackle poverty and unemployment, according to a report presented yesterday in Abuja.

The five-chapter report was an independent project by Next Generation Nigeria, a youth group exploring how the nation could benefit from its young people. It was compiled in collaboration with the British Council and the Harvard School of Public Health.

Presenting the report, Frank Nweke, director general of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, who worked on the project, said a shortage of jobs is a serious challenge.

“Without remedial action, the crisis in the job market will worsen rapidly as growing numbers of young Nigerians enter the workforce,” he said.

Mr. Nweke said the country cannot generate new jobs unless it diversifies its economy. He called for a reduction in the overdependence on oil and more investments in agriculture, information and communications technology, textile, and leather.

“The oil industry contributes 40 percent to the national GDP [Gross Domestic Product],” he said. “But it is highly capital-intensive and employs only a tiny fraction of the population.”

More investment

Nigeria needs to spend up to 4 percent more of its GDP on the infrastructure that will underpin a world class economy, said Mr. Nweke.

Poor power generation, in particular, has forced a lot of industries to close down in the last few decades.

“Unless we address those things that made them shut down, the kind of employment needed to take the youth off the streets, make them more productive, and prepare the country to be the largest economy, cannot be generated,” he said.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, managing director, World Bank, and chairperson of the Next Generation Nigeria, said at the event that Nigeria must tap into the energies of the young. If this demographic are managed well, Nigeria can take off in the manner that countries like South Korea were able to do in the 1980s and 1990s.

“However, this demographic dividend will not come up automatically,” she said.

“Immediate policy actions need to be taken to seize the window of opportunity. We need to invest in the health and education of our young people,” she said.

Too much talk. Talk, talk, talk everywhere. A country that talk more and do less will go no where. Our problem is that we talk too much and do less (we are too verbose). I don`t know why we copy Britiko in everything, Take a look at the Chinese, Japanese and the Koreans, they talk less. Sometimes you will think they are dummies because they talk less. Now they have taken over the world economy.

Re: Nigeria Must Create 25 Million Jobs In 10 Years by snowdrops(m): 2:17pm On Sep 03, 2010
do these jobs include kidnappers, political thugs, 419s, hired killers, ?

if so with the direction the country is heading these jobs are more likely to be created for the youths in 10yrs than any white/blue collar ones.
Re: Nigeria Must Create 25 Million Jobs In 10 Years by davidif: 3:41pm On Sep 03, 2010
and the only way it can do that would be to revive the energy sector soa sto kick start industrialization. If they can't do that then they are wasting there time.

Good vision, but everything calls on us the youths, to rise up, create and seize opportunities for ourselves.  We cant wait for the politicians to do anything for us.  An African politician is typical and endeavors to enrich himself.

Re: Nigeria Must Create 25 Million Jobs In 10 Years by obi123: 4:37pm On Sep 03, 2010
we are not even clear on the direction we are going, talkless of projecting our 10year needs, the only thing we are sure of at the moment is that clearly we are nowhere

The need of the country will determine what jobs will be created and what skills will be needed to fill those jobs.

Create more industries and improve the already existing industries first then the jobs will come

25 million jobs for a population of how many ?

i wonder what kind of jobs? what sectors? what skills will be needed, what skills do we have at the moment ?

meanwhile youth ,young people everytime young people the old people nko, they act like the old people have nothing to offer , surely Nigeria is everyone's responsibility.

Instead of looking for a job you can create a job. If you are interested in making money from SMS business go to http://www.080advertising.com

It's been 3 years since I started earning 10% commission from them. It's cool.

1. Scrap NYSC and replace it with an entrepreneurship program and at the end, give them the money that would have being paid to them as allawi for one year to start up businesses. Any graduate that is jobless after that, has his/herself to blame.

2. A functional micro finance policy for those who are not fresh graduates.

3. People should change their mindset from jobseeking to job creation. If you can't get a job, create one!

With 5 trillion in oil earnings, probably 50 million unemployed and with little or no infrastructure why is it so so so hard for us to connect the dots. We have so much and need so much, why, why, why.

Who will save us from these visionless, missionless yokes called leaders or politicians.

We need roads, hospitals, schools, power, water, everything is in short supply even with billions accruing from oil and teeming youths starving and no one can engage them in building and providing these things. No, but we rather excel in awarding contracts. Contracts, contracts, contracts for roads, water, schools even text books (yes text books for primary schools has to be organised and approved at the FEC meeting so that the mini star in charge can have his turn at the trough). We will continue contracting until our economy contracts into obscurity. We think this is how societies are built, great economies are created.

10,000 trucks are stuck in a 100 mile traffic snarl in China, 10,000 truck hauling coal. That translates to 20,000 drivers engaged productively in just one sector with one objective. And what is holding them up, public works. Building a super highway. What are our youths engaged in ?? Who is building our highways, Julius Berger and co. for billions over-budget that will be shared by the government lords and some foreign outvestors.

The great railways of Kenya and India were not built by Berger but by raw strength and steely determination. Berger is not in China inflating contracts. China will only import the very high tech or the very low - raw material. The centre belongs to its people and it will be satisfied with their abilities.

We can build the Niger-Delta for ourselves. We do not need NDDC, half baked lebanese or indian expatriates or pirating foreign companies to rob us of our livelihood while we starve.

The government must empower our populace and put us to work. Berger quoted for the resurfacing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport runway for 60?? or so billion. For what?? Try heading to Nassarawa state from Abuja and you'd find Nigerians breaking rocks for gravel with their bare hands for a living. Tell them you have a 60 billion naira task and clear their goods.Tomorrow you will have the whole village breaking rocks. What is unemployment

That is how great nations are built.

Rubbish NYSC can be replaced with a sound enterpreneurship program.

Quite agree with the NYSC angle. The current institution is a civil war relic that has lost its bearings in the wilderness this country has found itself. Jumping from trees and crawling in mud for a month does nothing to address our current challenges. Nigerians are a bit more integrated than the Government cares to think and the world has become a smaller place. The organisation should be refocused to tackling the most pressing social problem which is mass literacy and enlightenment (not education or orientation - the former is too expensive and the latter should be left to Nigerians to decide).

Corpers are educated and perhaps enlightened and should lend a hand to those who are not for the period of one year. This alone will break a lot of chains and begin to undermine the feudal system which we practice. Enlighten people on what democracy trully means, who and who not to vote for, what is corruption and its effects on them, etc. Reaching out to the entire length and breadth of the country well ahead of Jega and his gang grin

This is worthwhile.
