Holaz5: Ekiti has no different ways of conducting their ceremonies from other Yoruba groups. Naming ceremony on the eighth day (sometimes, 7th day; the child gets new name). The child can traditionally be named by Oloriebi or Pastor or Muslim Leader; early in the morning or evening, with party or not. Primary thing to share are salt, Biscuits, honey (in plates to taste by people who wish to). Food and drinks are secondary. Typical Ekiti names are; Adelua, Adeluyi (love these ones so much, for Adeleye and Adeniyi), Funmiluyi, Adesua, Suyi, Sua (Seye) Afuye, Olatuyi, Adetuyi, Akinlua, Akintuyi, etc. Burial ceremony is done immediately for 'young' people (50 year old may still be young) without ceremony but prayers. Elders are buried second day or third day or any other time the family decides with ceremonies. They can also be buried immediately and the ceremonies postponed till when the family is ready. The dead is buried at home or Church buried ground. The Origbos, who are lesser to Egiris in traditional rank, dig the ground while the Egiris supervise the activity. Both Esos are fed after this. There is honour for the departed soul when Eso digs ground than paying people to do so. Marriage ceremony actually starts with introduction of the few husband-to-be's family to the woman's family (momi-nmo o). A light meal is prepared to welcome them. The husband family may or may not come with hampers containig a bottle of wine and fruits. Then comes Idana (Traditional Marriage), this involves larger family members and, friends and well-wishers. Dress code is always traditional and colourful with 'Alaga Iduro' directing activities. Each family sitting opposite each other with their people. The husband family presents the wife family their requirements like tubers of yam, Bottle of honey, fruits, etc depending on households. 3 envelopes for the father, mother and 'Obirin Ile' (containing five hundred naira each in my own family, and which are returned to the husband's family; they would always say, 'they don't sell their daughter but give her...'). There may also be hampers. In Ekiti, the meal this day is always Pounded Yam with Isapa with Egusi or Vegetables. The 'Idana' can be the final wedding. It can also be followed by Church wedding day or months later. This day, traditional wedding comes the evening before Church, Registry, etc wedding or in the morning of the wedding day. Some people are even merging it with the wedding reception. In those days, though some people still do it, during the Idana, two other ladies would be presented at different times as fake wife to the husband before the real one. They also used to break Calabash with legs and there was washing of legs before being accepted into the husband family house. |
